Voices

If you run WebUpdater, you will see all the voices that are available for your unit. Garmin units do not support custom voices at this time.

I enjoyed listening to John Cleese, Ahhhnold S and Clint Eastwood on my rx5915. I was able to download them free.

Yeah, unfortunately Garmin doesn't offer any cool voices like that.

I'm still waiting for Garmin to offer the "Bubba" voice like TomTom does. Living in the middle of Texas he would fit in perfectly!

I kinda like the American Jill on my 7200. My dispatch thinks I have someone with me in the truck!

I'd love to get a hold of a TTS program with Jill's voice so I don't have to have different voices coming out of my 350.

I'm pretty happy with Emily (she makes me feel so proper), but yes, John Cleese would have been a hoot.

I guess I am not as fortunate. I can locate Cleese, but it is for a $$ fee on my Tom Tom acount.

Thanks - that is where I was looking, but the only free voice is a pass for me.

Could not find Eastwood at that location, but bubba is there ($$$). Strange - Cleese is not on this page!

FPichon, I think you're right... I remember seeing it within the last year, not for free though, but it's not there anymore... Hmmm I guess his royalties went up and Gary Busey was available? hehehe Most of these are over-the-top for me anyway, but hey, at least there's a choice. And yeah, nothing against it, but I don't think my iPAQ will get the free voice either, no mater how fabulous

1st post here, just got a nuvi 250 and was wondering if any other voices are available besides the generic ones provides (british english, american english, etc are the ones provided) On my unit there is no "Jill" or "Emily", etc.

if i am correct, you can't get tts on the 250. I am not sure if there is a modification for it or not. The C530 use to have one, but I think Garmin fixed that issue.

it appears the nuvi 250 does NOT support TTS.

Go to 'Specs'; then under 'Features' the Speaks street names (e.g. "Turn right ON ELM STREET in 500 ft.") option says NO.

Thank you for the reply. I already knew that the 250 did not have "tts". What I was wondering about was if any other voices were available besides the ones already included. The 250 has some bland voices for the basic commands = ie : "turn left in..." "arriving at destination..." etc.

One advantage of non-TTS is it's much easier to change the voice yourself. You can change "turn left in..." to "Hey man, you better hang a left in ..."!

I guess that what I want is a new voice set ie : "Jill" or "Betty" or other that are available on the "tts" but for the basic commands of the 250. Thank you for your links, I would still like some clearer info o how to create my own set of instructions if possible.

Tom Tom has celebrity voices. My favorite is Mr. T.

There are both comical and serious versions.

I think I must stay with that female voice on my GPS, there is no possibility to change that i think?

If you've removed them from your unit they can be downloaded via Garmin WebUpdater again.

If you haven't removed them you should have:

American English
American English-Jack (TTS)
American English-Jill (TTS)

Take a peek, Wrench/Settings/Language/Voice

I just don't like jack, Doesnt sound nice. Celleberty voices would be cool, but id rather have a perfected simple jill. How good, acurate does the celeberty voices sound? and do they cover tts? if not its pointless, (for me)

As everybody I am also waiting eagerly for those cool voices for my Nuvi.

He won't have any TTS files on a 250, just the basic female or male English.

What if I copy my voices out of my Nuvi 350 and upload these to rapidshare. You can then download them in copy and paste them into your Garmin unit, voice folder.
Maybe this will work.

mossie, if you download Garmin's WebUpdater software and install it on your computer and then run it with your nuvi connected to your computer, you will get access to ALL the voices available for your unit.

That is one good thing about Tomtom, many custom voices including many (fake) star voices. They once had the real John Cleese record for them including some hilarious commentary but I haven't seen that one around for a while, it may not be available.

I read some reviews that tom tom is not as accurate as garmin, in terms of shortest way etc. may be you can tell if this is just a roumer or some trouth to that
