Garmin 765T - Problems entering text (gets stuck/freezes momentarily)

I have a 765T (this is actually a replacement 7655T that Garmin sent me when I sent my other unit back in for repair due to a problem with the screen - pressing the screen and something else on the screen being selected.)

This replacement unit didn't seem to suffer from the same problem so I figured I was fine. However, I've been noticing that this replacemtnt unit tends to hesitate/freeze when entering text sometimes. I notice it mostly on the Where to go> Points of Interest area. If I select "Spell Name" or "Spell" after selecting any other options in this area, when the keyboard comes up and I start typing, when I get to the 2nd letter, the screen freezes for about 3-4 seconds. It looks like the unit registers the letters if I keep typing and they just all show up at once after the screen unfreezes. The unit doesn't behave like that in any other areas where you have to use the keyboard but only inside "Points Of Interest" areas. This is very annoying and I am pretty sure my original unit didn't behave this way. Anyone know how to fix this?

No 7x5 firmware update

jmkthird, I just checked and at this time there is no firmware update beyond 3.90 for the nuvi 7x5.

Note that the typing lag introduced in 3.90 does not occur when entering addresses, only when using the Spell function on POI search.

There was a recent update for traffic text, so maybe that is what you updated.

Freezing Keyboard

It's been awhile since I looked back to this post....guess the bug has not yet been fixed! I'll just have to get used to it.....

.

There has been no firmware update past v3.90 since it's release in Dec 2009. There have been a couple of voice updates along with a traffic text update as mentioned by Alan within the last month or so but no firmware as of June 29. To avoid this confusion, just use WebUpdater to see exactly what has been updated instead of guessing with myDashboard.

traffic problem fixed using webupdater

Although this problem with the freezing text needs to be fixed, another problem with the 3.90 firmware update was the traffic randomly going out as we all know. This problem has recently been corrected though with a traffic update for the 765t in the WebUpdater program. I believe it's entitled "Traffic/text update" or something close to that. I now have traffic everywhere I need it without it randomly going out. Just wanted to let everyone know.

I applied that update the other day and assumed it was just fixing some misspelling or other similar error. I had the gray icon on my commute earlier this week and figured it was the same old traffic reception bug. I will have to pay a bit more attention when the gray icon reappears and see if the issue is truly a reception issue or if it is still not working right for me. I found in past that by going into diagnostics while the icon was gray, you would see that the GTM 20 was receiving normally. If I still see it synced and the icon is gray, I will assume I am still broken.

I really want a fix for the 3.90 stutter. Entering the PIN to GarminLock can be frustrating sometimes.

Please report back if this fixes the stagnant/grey icon traffic issue for you. I'm on 3.60 and staying there until this issue (at least) is resolved. Personally, I'm not holding my breath that this "traffic text update" fixes the issue since reverting from 3.90 to 3.60 totally corrects it. But then again, anything is possible...

I have again updated from 3.60 to 3.90 to test this traffic/text update. So far after a couple of hours on my indoor test-bed (yes, I *do* get satellite reception indoors), I have NOT had the grey traffic icon/traffic delayed xx minutes issue as before. Yes, I did get this regularly on the test-bed and not seeing it here is a good sign. The real test will come Friday & the weekend where I'll give it some real-world testing on our weekly trip to Disneyland and around town. I'll update with any findings. If this turns out to *not* be a valid fix, I'll just drop back down to 3.60 (again).

As was also mentioned by "rame1012", the POI search bug *is* still present.

The last 765 that was sent to me (two week ago) has 3.8 on it. After three 3.9 units, I told them that I wanted my money back. They told me that would back date a new unit to 3.8. They did and sent it out to me and it has worked just fine. I have not had one of the problems that I had with 3.9. I won't even update my free maps. The only time I hook it up to a computer, is to update my POI's. They did tell me that they know about all the problems because of 3.9 and a fix for 3.9 will be released shortly.

I wish they had made 3.80 available for download somewhere. I suspect it was a maintenance release to support the newer processor boards. 3.60 is not an option due to my V11 processor.

I'll probably faint if they release an update to 3.90 shortly. They have been claiming since March an update was on the way. I am approaching four months with my second 765T now. I just used my C550 yesterday as I didn't want to deal with some of the grief the 765T has been giving me. Tomorrow I will test out the traffic and see if the recent traffic text update fixes the gray icon problem.

Traffic Still Not Working

I took the 765T out today after the holiday weekend and I find the recent traffic text update has not fixed my device. I had the gray icon for a few minutes so I went into diagnostics and checked the GTM 20 status. It was still receiving TMC packets and was synced with a station. Exited out and the icon was still gray. Looks like it will have to be a firmware upgrade. Should that not solve the problem, I think the 765T is going on eBay and I am sticking with the C550.

When I did an update, I had a similar experience on my 765T. I deleted all the recent finds and favorites ... and all seemed to start working well again. Not sure why there was an issue with 'recently found' items or favorites, but flushing those two categories got me 'back on track!'

Garmin 765 Entering Text in POI Screen

Greetings from Australia. Love your work. grin
Have the same problem entering text into the "spell address" section of POI screen, and hoped you guys might come up with a solution. Using V3.90 firmware, and on 3rd 765 unit after 2 replaced under warranty (screen issues on both).
Garmin Support in Oz has today told me, at last, that the issue is indexing POI's i.e. when you spell something starting, say, "C", it locks up to index all C entries before proceeding. The time delay is apparently because the Garmin indexing process is somehow inefficient. The fix, I am told, will be the 3rd party outsourcing of installed POI's on future models, with these being provided as an additional cost add-on (he mentioned the vicinity of $A30 annually and a company called Cyclops as the supplier).
I suggested that this would see most customers go elsewhere, but not particularly interested.
Cheers

Sad that they do not have the in-house talent to write such a thing. The crazy thing is it worked prior to version 3.90 of the firmware. Something they screwed up after 3.80 caused the problem.

That estimate of USD$26.00 is a pretty high price for Garmin (and us) to pay for a software routine. Of course they could make the hardware even cheaper to compensate. Anybody want an even more unreliable Bluetooth?

I have been lurking on this site for several months. I'd like to thank everyone on this board. You've save my sanity more than I can say.

The screen issues were going to be my apex. Even the delete button misfired with a letter. Then delete the deletion... what a mess.

I have had the same issues with the random screen misfires, 2nd character freeze, traffic disappears, and reboots.

Already swapped a new 765T for a 2nd replacement with the same issues. The update appears to fix the screen misfire and freeze issues. I haven't been able to test the rest yet.

I don't want to declare mission accomplished prematurely. We know how badly that can go. Anyone else want to post whether software version 4.0 fixed these issues.

From a lurker who has appreciated this board

You've saved my sanity. Gone thru 2 765T's and Garmin was arranging to RMA for a 3rd due to these issues.

Thought I'd check this board one last time before returning it again.

Upon first blush, software version 4.0 appears to resolve some of the worst issues. Will test the rest when I go on the road tomorrow.

Thanks to all.

It should be noted that the new overspeed indicator mentioned with the v4.00 update will NOT function if the speed limit for the road is not being displayed on the unit (e.g. the rectangular white "Speed Limit 65" sign).

If the unit does not know the speed limit for the road (no speed limit data in the map), it would have no way to tell that you've gone over the speed limit. Our Canadian friends don't have the speed limit data available to them (or it's very sparse) in the mapping data so if you're in Canada, you likely won't see the white Speed Limit sign nor the overspeed indicator.

Needs to be Setable

The red on the speed is a nice feature but would be much better and more useful if the "Turn Red Speed" was setable. On most Texas highways the traffic runs on average 5 to 10 mph faster than posted. The ability to set the Red Speed using a + or - number (60 mph and set factor of +5 - turns red at 65) would be more useful than than turning red 1 mph over the limit. Seems mind is always red. Oh yes, the red is difficult to read at night.
