Garmin 765T - Problems entering text (gets stuck/freezes momentarily)

I have a 765T (this is actually a replacement 7655T that Garmin sent me when I sent my other unit back in for repair due to a problem with the screen - pressing the screen and something else on the screen being selected.)

This replacement unit didn't seem to suffer from the same problem so I figured I was fine. However, I've been noticing that this replacemtnt unit tends to hesitate/freeze when entering text sometimes. I notice it mostly on the Where to go> Points of Interest area. If I select "Spell Name" or "Spell" after selecting any other options in this area, when the keyboard comes up and I start typing, when I get to the 2nd letter, the screen freezes for about 3-4 seconds. It looks like the unit registers the letters if I keep typing and they just all show up at once after the screen unfreezes. The unit doesn't behave like that in any other areas where you have to use the keyboard but only inside "Points Of Interest" areas. This is very annoying and I am pretty sure my original unit didn't behave this way. Anyone know how to fix this?

garmin freeze response

i emailed garmin support this morning about the keyboard freezing problem. this is their response back to me.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I will gladly help with this issue. In order to recalibrate the Nuvi 700 or 705 series touch screen, follow the instructions below.

1. Start with the unit powered OFF and unplugged from power supply.

2. Press and hold your finger anywhere on the touch screen

3. Next, slide the power switch ON and immediately slide it into the Lock position. There is no need to wait for the screen to flash on or show the Garmin logo before moving the switch into the Lock position.

4. Leave your finger on the screen for about 45 seconds.

5. Two intersecting lines should display on the screen along with the message: Press Dot.

6. Follow the rest of the on screen prompts to complete the screen recalibration. Once it is completed the unit will display Calibration Complete.

If you are in need of further assistance please feel free to reply to this message.

Hard rest with white screen

DorkusNimrod wrote:

Did you do a hard reset immediately after all firmware updates/backdates as I suggested above?

If you're having issues with the updating/backdating, I would just stay where you are now at 3.90 and wait for a fix from Garmin.

I'm having the same issue with the white screen after powering back up.

So, how do you do a hard reset after the firmware update if you have a white screen and cannot see anything?

Jeff

Did you go to the hard reset

Did you go to the hard reset procedure I linked to previously in this thread and read through it? Here it is again:

Hard reset:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/26136

If it doesn't work, just update the unit again using WebUpdater to v3.90 and wait for a fix from Garmin.

I believe this is the way to hard reset a 765T:

Power the unit off. Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on. Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?" prompt appears. Press "yes" and the unit will reboot. Reset all your location settings and user preferences.

If that's true how can this procedure be completed if I am getting a totally white screen and can see nothing at all?

And yes, I can go back to 3.90 if I have to.

Thanks
Jeff

I guess I'm thinking about

I guess I'm thinking about the switch back to 3.60

What's the difference between the two?

I think I can live with delay until update for 765T

It is not so bad once you realize it is there. It was freaky the first time I saw the delay.

We'll see what Garmin does. The different CSR reports concern me - but there is little I can do about it but make my complaints known.

You'd think they wuld train the CSRs a bit more consistently, but the whole electronics industry seems to have gone this way.

Too bad for us.

I agree

While annoying, the delay is mainly just an inconvenience. The buggy touchscreen however can really be infuriating. Let's hope the next firmware addresses both issues.

Garmin reply

I sent Garmin an email about this issue and here is their reply:

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I have not heard of that issue turning up on units on a consistent basis. We may want to try a factory reset, which could erase favorites to see if the helps with the problem. Otherwise, I will pass this bug on to our software team for review in hopes of a software update. If the problem continues, the device may need to be exchanged. Please advise if this is the case."

I did reference this thread is case they were interested.

BTW has anyone found out how to get around the white screen after the downgrade to 3.60 then rebooting?

Thanks
Jeff

If the replacement you get has firmware v3.90 on it, it most likely will have the exact same problem. For Garmin to be sending you unit replacements for a software issue is silly and a waste of resources along with their time and your time as well without the unit.

Please report back when you get the replacement unit.

As someone did mention, it

As someone did mention, it is not quite as bad as it seems. If it does freeze, it still recognizes the rest of the letters entered while it appears frozen. When it thaws, everything you entered is there.
But Garmin stinks at getting on board with these things quickly. They must have to receive a certain number of the exact same issue before they look into it.

They received it on the 19th

They got it on the 19th, so it took 4 days for them go get it, we'll see how long it takes to turn it around. I'll report back what firmware version and if it has the same problem.

Any news on the new firmware fix that someone said Garmin told them was on the horizon?

I think I've figured out why the Nuvi's freeze for a few seconds when typing. It's because of the number of custom POI's, either in the unit, or on a card.

I experiend this after loading the US Postal Zip POI, and found the typing delay was there, not too bad but there. As I have mine on the SD card, I just removed the card and no more delays.

So, it would appear the unit searches the POI's as well perhaps.

Give it a try and let the forum know!

First post - thanks for so much info

It's great to have a good resource like this.

My Nuvi 765T just got updated on Feb 24 and now has the text freezing problem.

My question is - Is there a better unit that doesn't have problems? I was looking at the 1490, for example.

Let me welcome you to the site first of all.

As to units having problems, they all have them. A lot of if a reported problem will affect you is in how you plan on using the unit. Fortunately for the 765 there is a quick roll-back fix. For some of the other issues reported, fixes are either "in the works" or "may be addressed in future releases."

Both my 350 and 760 do this

Both my 350 and 760 do this from time to time. When it happens, it's always very soon after power up. I think that even though the Nuvi is booted and has satellite acquisition, there is still a good deal of activity going on in the background. Like indexing files, etc. When I used to have an SD card in there with a couple thousand songs, I noticed that it took a while for the Nuvis to index all those files and it would be a little sluggish for the first minute or two after bootup and being able to navigate. And that's when I would sometimes see the typing delay problem.

same issue 755t

are y ausing an exteranl memory card? Try a different brand - same ussue - almost totally gone with different dard

same issue

also note - had a funky poi file - downloaded the gpx - legnhty delays when typing in search (aotu complete function slow when accessing bad poi file - reason for long delay ... need work on their search feature). removed gpx from device - ran through poiloader - big difference. nit what i would call perfect - but much better. add the new card - issue with 3.9 all but gone. still went back to 3.6 though - performance in general seems beter.

No card

I am returning my 765T due to these very issues along with my frustration at Garmin's total lack of decent customer support. Their support has always sucked but at least my Nuvi 650's hardware seemed sound. The 765T has been a 3-week nightmare and it is now boxed up and on its way back to Amazon. I will be buying a TomTom. It may lack the pizazz of the Garmin but at least the unit's performance won't have me bashing my head against the windshield.

p.s. Note the date of my post as it shows that months later, Garmin still has done nothing to address the concerns of its customers.

In the Firmware

It's hanging up as it changes from uppercase to lowercase... but the buffer is working. If you continue, it will catch up.

Just double check what you typed in the bline before "submitting" it for processing.

(And I doubt that Garmin will have a fix soon, I suspect they haven't clued in on the actual problem. Typical of programmers who are being rushed to fix it before they know what's wrong.

Just one old-time computer guru's opinion.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I would be happy to help you with this issue.

Our sincerest apologies for this issue, as we are aware of this glitch, and we are currently working on a fix. We have not been informed of a date of release, but it is hopefully going to be released within the next week or so.

Believe It When I See It

I have had a 765T since mid-March and it came with 3.90 (and old 2010.10 maps - go figure). I did not know about the issues with 3.90 at the time and assumed the erratic behavior was par for the course. My C550 has been an outstanding unit and I am still debating whether to keep it in reserve or sell it on eBay. Hopefully Garmin will release an update soon though I can wait if they spend the extra time to do some additional QC on it.

My 750 also has a lag sometimes

I can punch in 2 or 3 keys and it will show them a few seconds later. At first I used to retype nand then it would double up. Funny some days it doesn't do this?

My 765T has exhibited similar problems (although extremely intermittent) mentioned in this post. I called Garmin support and the rep that I talked to was not aware of any problems with buggy software. Sounds as if the right hand may not know what the left hand is doing. The rep went onto say that my only option is to swap the unit for another.

Frankly, they are not keen on admitting problems even if it is documented on the screen in front of them. Swapping gives them an excuse to make your call go away. Unfortunately, you will still find the same problem until 3.90 is fixed AND you will also wind up with a refurbished unit to boot.

Having a unit that is only 1 1/2 months old, I would not be too interested in taking a refurbished unit at this time. In a year perhaps, but not now.

Just a note on the keyboard freezing, at least mine. As reported, even though it appears to freeze, if you continue to enter the rest of your information, it will all be there when it "unfreezes." While a fix would be nice assuming it does not break something else, I can actually live with this as it is not a big deal.

One question, is the screen input accurate? If it is, I might have to look into it as I'm tiring of pressing in one place & having some random character occasionally appear. Even when pressing the same button repeatedly such as the down-arrow... down, down, down, "Q". What's that? I didn't even move my finger.

Yes, I've recallibrated multiple times, performed a hard reset & even exchanged the unit.

Love the Garmin features, hardware just seems of poor quality.

Garmin has had a calibration issue on the 765T ever since the latest update to the firmware. They have know about it for months and still have done nothing to fix it. I tried two 765T's and they both worked horribly. Took them back and got a 1490T which is in my opinion far superior although it lacks a few of the features on the 765. (FM transmitter and MP3 player) I never used either one anyway.

Bobby....Garmin 2450LM

Has Garmin issued a patch for this problem yet?

I also have regretted "upgrading" to 765 from 660. Feels more like a downgrade.

Maps and Software Update?

I've been wanting to update the maps in my 765T which are 2 years old. However, I thought I had read somewhere that the map instalation automatically updates the software to the latest version as well? I still have v3.60 in my unit and it's been working perfectly. I don't want to install the latest map and bring v3.90 (and all its problems) in along with it. Is it true this will happen if I install the latest maps?

If its true, I will keep waiting for a patch to fix their last buggy release before installing the new maps.

Thanks!

I would think it would be two separate downloads. If you go to my dashboard with your unit connected to your pc it will show you if there is software available as well as maps that are available. You should probably talk to Garmin and let us know what you find out.

There are numerous posts on this fix from DorkusNimrod, on how to keep the current firmware. You just need to edit the .xml file.
