Garmin Safety Camera Database

I just noticed that Garmin now has a subscription for safety cameras for the US and Canada. I cant imagine anyone paying $35 dollars to Garmin to download the cameras when they can get them here at POI. Just curious, has anyone tried the subscription?

UPDATE: For 2012 and newer models, Garmin no longer offers the Cyclops safety camera database for USA and Canada.

POI Factory's camera files continue to work with all of Garmin's automotive navigation units, including their newer models.

I fully purchased this subscription without using the trial. I found no difficulty in downloading the subscription, but it would never disclose any fixed camera locations here in Winnipeg. I did receive multiple variable camera notifications.
I inquired at Garmin, and they referred me to Cyclops. I had a total of 6 or 8 emails to both areas, both of which told me I was doing something wrong. I meticulously followed the instructions to no avail.
On trips through Canada I have received fixed camera warnings in both Quebec City and Montreal, but never any in Manitoba.
Garmin did extend my subscription by 6 months, but 6 more months of it not working was not of much value.
I still have had no satisfaction.
As a new member here, I will be attempting to use this service, as Winnipeg has 52 fixed camera "fund raisers", along with their fleet of movable cameras.

Big X,

I am in Winnipeg and use the POI Factory camera list in:

Nuvi 780
Nuvi 1490
330

They all work great and I have been on here since 2007 or so...no problems at all with the roll your own and contribute where you can motto here.

so..what's the deal..

anybody really like the feature?

Garmin website has it for

Garmin website has it for 24.99 USD.

POI Factory vs Garmin

I have used both POI-Factory and Garmin and they are similar in operation except the POI Factory files are more up to date.

I've found quite the opposite, POI has many alerts where there are no cameras. imho it would be a major undertaking to remove them all.

Interesting

Can you point to an alert where there was not a camera?

Sorry, I just find it hard to believe, although I know some of our members see turn lane cameras and report them 9trying to be helpful). Maybe some get through but they should be quickly weeded out.

Agreed

romanviking wrote:

Agreed. POI Factory's RLCs are updated regularly on a weekly basis. I have no idea how often Garmin's database is updated. I would assume that it's not weekly.

Give us some locations so we can check them.

You can remove them yourself

I've added and deleted local cams. Just copy the code and replace your info over theirs.

Had a local cam that took a long time for POI Factory to add so I added it on my Garmin till they got it on update.

Deleteing is easy, find the line and click delete

Surprising

The times I have noticed people reporting camera corrections have resulted in an updated file within a week. Did you make a report on your local cam?

Yes, several times

was finaly told it had to be confirmed, so I just added it to my file myself as I went by it several times a week. In Tucson on La Cholla south of River was one, can't remember the other as it was not close to my side of town

usually, each city has something on its website that gives the location of cameras. Here is the one for Tucson
http://cms3.tucsonaz.gov/files/police/pdf/Annual_Report-_FY2....

I did not see one on La Cholla. Tucson claims "All intersections with red light cameras will be clearly marked with signs indicating that the intersection is photo enforced." The next time you go by this location you might look for signage.

Most of the Garmin products are available for lower price online, sometimes Amazon has the lowest price, sometimes ebay, etc.

Trapster POI file deployed in Garmin

I've been using trapster POIs recently to check it out (it has a downloadable module that you can deploy on your garmin or other Brand of GPS), does anyone has experience with it? How often are they updated? So far, they seem good - I'll report back as I gather more data on it.

Seems accurate here

I used to live in an area without cameras so never really had a chance to check on the accuracy of the POI Factory file before but have moved and it does seem to be pretty accurate. I haven't run into an intersection yet where the camera is not clearly marked by signs but it is nice to have the warning.

Cameras

As I live in an area with many cameras around this file has been a godsend for my GPS. I am content knowing the great work that goes into this file. Keep up the good work everyone and special thanks to miss poi!

Why?

I can't imagine why you would pay for something that is updated quarterly and available with much more frequent updates here for free.

I've been using trapster's POI file for a week now, and it seems very accurate, so I am going to install both Trapster's and POI-Factory's POIs side by side, seems like the best combination.

Trapster Not Accurate

I have driven by all of the camera locations in my area.

You ought to try this out.

Fire up EPE
Open the Trapster red-light file
Merge open the poi-factory red-light file
Edit > Find > your home town name
Tools > Sort by location

Now what you have is a combination of the files from Trapster and from poi-factory with the first entry in the combined and sorted list being the entry from the initial "Find".

Double click on the first entry to open up the EPE Edit dialog.

Now start pressing the "Next POI" button near the bottom right of the Edit Dialog. What you should see are sets of Trapster and poi-factory camera entries.

Whenever you do not find the (roughly the same) coordinates for first one then the other of the two files, you have a mismatch.

In my case Trapster had 3 redlight locations that were not really cameras (although I'll give Trapster a bit of a break in that one of the locations does have real redlight cameras except they have NEVER been active - a different supplier was involved and the contract never implemented). Trapster missed 1 real redlight camera.

Trapster had two fixed speed cameras that do not exist and missed two fixed cameras that do exist.

Content Tool Kit

Garmin has a tool for publishing directional alerts called Content Tool Kit. We are working on licensing this for POI Factory and plan to use this with our camera files.

Was wondering if this tool is being used on the camera files?

At this time, I don't believe that it is.

cyclops

I have been using the trial version from Garmin for almost a month. soon to run out. I haven't had god reliability with it. We have some cameras that face one direction, and I don't get a tone every time. I also noticed a tone when getting on the freeway where there is no cameras located. Sometimes I get a tone going through a known red light camera, but most of the time no tone. I don't have POI red light file to compare the two. I am thinking about it.

some differences

I've never used the Cyclops database but from all that has been written about it it uses directional alerts. Directional alerts will alert only when you are going in the direction the camera records rather than the location alerts used in the POI-Factory database. JM looked into adding directional alerts but the cost of the Garmin software for creating them and the recurring license fee was too high.

Garmin safety camera app

Their cyclops 'app' will not work on their new 2797, nor ANY of their 2013 models, accord to tech support. Tried it and it wouldn't load. The POI Factory's loaded fine and their instruction was great. Tried it out last night, worked fine.

POI Factory more accurate, but trapster not bad...

I'll stay with my RLC POIs from poi-factory, but trapster files weren't that bad. Of course, poi-factory's were better, but I believe they're the best out there...

I wonder if trapster's files are good compared to Garmins.

Typical...

mmoonitz wrote:

This is typical Garmin "advancement"...add new features while removing existing features with really no reason or warning. They'll likely add the Cyclops Safety Cameras support in a new model in the future. rolleyes

EDIT: In addition, if you go to the Safety Camera product page (for the US at least, linked below) and click on the "Compatible Devices" tab, you'll get a "Loading..." message with no devices ever showing up (at least for me using the link below).

Could you provide me with

Could you provide me with more information about this? How do I get the file that contains the directional information?

Garmin Safety camera subscription

I tried the Garmin safety camera subscription. They give you a free 30 day trial. It works great. It warns you with both an audible warning and a red visual warning when you approach the cameras. I only tried the free subscription , so I don't know how often they update their database. After the free subscription ends, you still have the original database working, but their are no updates unless you purchase the subscription.

RLC database comparison

I guess the quick updates provided by POI users will make this much better than what Garmin provies via cyclops.

Thats the advantage of P2P sites such as this and Waze.

Can we have both the garmin

Can we have both the garmin one (free trial) and POI one?

If yes, does it give a double alert?

Yes yes but

Yes. Yes. But note that the Garmin one will not install and work on some of the newer nuvis.

Conspiracy?

That's very interesting... I wonder if they're caving to pressure from government entities "encouraging" them not to continue offering such services since everyone knows that anyone running safety camera alerts on their GPS is a reckless lawbreaker.
wink

Compatible Garmin models

I am brand new here. I have a Garmin nuvi 55LM and a nuvi 57LM. Can I use the POI factory traffic camera alert software on these models? Are they compatible?

Jere

Yes.

POI Factory camera files are installed with Garmin's POI Loader program and are compatible with all nuvi models.

Incidentally, welcome to POI Factory. You will find lots of help here from knowledgable forum members.

Welcome to The Factory. Once you're set with POI Loader and the redlight and speed camera POI files, you can think about adding option custom icons and custom audio alert sounds for your POIs.

Once you've earned your windmill (or stars), the speed and redlight files will be free downloads.

Stick around and have fun.

@Jere Wood

Welcome to the site.

We usually recommend the following.

There is a "Learn" button in the upper right of this page next to "red light cameras" that takes you to a Getting Started page. It is worthwhile visiting this page.

To make navigation easy, most browsers provide the following option. When you want to follow a link - but still keep your current page open - you can hold down the "Ctrl" key as you left-click on a link. That action will open a new "Tab" in your browser up on the "Tab" bar. When you then left-click on that new "Tab", you will follow the link - leaving the "Tab" you are now reading open and available to click on and return here.

So, using the "Learn" link, you might try the "Ctrl" - left-click sequence and then return here. You can return by either "X-ing" out of the "Getting Started" page (using the "X" on the "Tab" itself) or just left-clicking on the "Tab" for the page you are on right now.

Note that the Learn Button will give you access to two valuable reference pages -
the "Index" to all of the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) and the Glossary of Terms and Links.

Since you are new here, I encourage you to go through a couple of the Tutorials.

The first link makes sure the settings on your computer are such that you can do more advanced POI loading.
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30393

The next link helps you make a backup of your GPS by attaching it to your computer. (NEVER do anything to your GPS until you have a backup). It also assures that you put your (newer) unit into a state where you can see all of the folders there.
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30394

Let us know how we can help you enjoy your GPS.

POI Factory redlight camera is the best

chewbacca wrote:

That sounds great but my experience is the opposite of yours. Nuvi alerts me while I'm on CA freeway and remains silent while I pass RLC protected intersections.

Passed right by a redlight camera that was installed since 2010 and the Garmin remained silent with the Garmin file installed. Lucky for me, I entered the intersection on the yellow and just as I passed the white line it turned red. ($100 saved by luck)
