Garmin Safety Camera Database

I just noticed that Garmin now has a subscription for safety cameras for the US and Canada. I cant imagine anyone paying $35 dollars to Garmin to download the cameras when they can get them here at POI. Just curious, has anyone tried the subscription?

UPDATE: For 2012 and newer models, Garmin no longer offers the Cyclops safety camera database for USA and Canada.

POI Factory's camera files continue to work with all of Garmin's automotive navigation units, including their newer models.

Garmin has a tool for publishing directional alerts called Content Tool Kit. We are working on licensing this for POI Factory and plan to use this with our camera files.

Jon is making improvements to the module I use for managing the camera files, and I will be working on directional information in February.

Not at all correct

Completely incorrect. POI files ONLY alert when they are on your calculated route. While the exact distance is not known, it is estimated that if the POI coordinates are more than about 50 feet off the actual road you are traveling on, they will not alert. If the POI location is on one side of a divided highway, it will only alert when you are traveling on that side of the road.

What you are referring to is Tour Guide files, which alert in a radius around the POI.

Thanks

Thank you and Jon for all of your hard work:)

I don't think it's been out

I don't think it's been out long enough for anyone's free trial to expire, but does anyone know if the Garmin database will expire at the end of the trial? I'm guessing they have the ability to time-lock the file through the unl file

.

My 775T came installed with the Garmin Safety Cameras, but I turned it off immediately. I'm not sure if this was a limited demo-type file, or the full meal deal.

Does anyone know what file it is, so I can check the date on it?

I Second what you said, it would be interesting to see what the differences are.

They are not getting it from here. I would love to know how their content compares with ours.

Miss POI

.

I don't know the exact file name but it should be located in the x:\Garmin\Poi\ folder. My US/CAN trial file is named "safety_camera_US_Canada.gpi" and comes with a corresponding .unl(unlock) file. Look for something similar.

Not there

They must be using a different name. I did have one with a long string of numbers, and the .gpi suffix, 13.9 megs or so. No properties available for it though.

I will be interested to see how the directional alerts Miss POI is able to add to the files will work. I applaud your continued efforts.

Has anyone in the Vancouver, BC area tried this out? How's the coverage? Thanks!

Interested too...

I have yet to test either the file from here or the free 30-day Garmin trial, but I like the idea of having both as a comparison and safety backup, (especially if the free trial expires anyway).

I am also in Phoenix and there seems to be a disproportionate amount of us on here... we are number 7 in most traffic cams!

The poi's I had loaded from here were done as radius (tour guides) thinking I'd like to know when something was nearby (favorite restaurant or gas station, etc.). However, it is causing too many audio and visual alerts so I am going to try to change to standard linear mode.

Any of you using tour guide or radial poi's: Do you notice the tour guide button temporarily replaces the MP3 Player button when tour guide pops up? Also, I find on my new nuvi 765T, you can't select any pre-installed map poi's when a custom radial (tour guide) poi is on the screen. It moves you over to your custom poi instead automatically. Anyone notice this? I don't remember this with my 780.

Turned it off

I turned it off after a month of trial.
It was really giving false warning for speed cam.
Where ever It feels It shall warn me of variable safety camera zone. Now what does that mean? If there is no fix camera you can get escaped. All the sites other than fix camera is variable safety camera zone. Cops wont put a sign board stating I am standing after half mile with a speed gun. Come and Mess with me!!!!!
I didn't find it useful. It doesnt have speech alert . Only beep. which goes on almost in 4 out of 10 free way ramp or exit .

confused I have download a free trial, so far they seem to work just fine, but I have not tried them on a long trip, but I will try them on a trip to boston later this month.

Camera subscription

I just bought my first Garmin about 2 weeks ago.
I am new to the POI Factory so please be patient.

I see posts questioning why anyone would pay $35 to Garmin for a 1 year Camera database subscription.
I just signed for the 1 month Garmin free trial and am trying to decide whether to continue there or at the POI Factory.
Do I need to make a donation here in order to get the camera database? I noticed that a donation of $5 to $20 is suggested. Do I need to make a donation to get the database. Do I get more for $20 as opposed to a $5 donation? I'm not trying to be cheap, just curious how this all works.
Thanks,

How to remove the trial files ?

I did the trial, how I remove the files now that they're expired. In the Folder Garmin\Poi\ I see these 3 files with the same name (and date created) but different extension: safety_camera_us_canada.gma ; .gpi and .unl

There is also another file: 006D135900.gpi but without date created, should I just erase the 3 files named safety_cameras?

POI Factory

I'll stick with POI Factory.

delete them

Delete the 3 safety camera files. The 4th may be a location you downloaded from Google or another mapping service. It could also be an airport locations file as you still have MSN available.

Check your backup

puchasr wrote:

If you did an initial backup, you will find that 006D135900.gpi came as part of your 855 (it was on my 765T). If you look at the file in Wordpad, you will see "MSN_Airport_v31" near the top.

One of the reasons why many of us advocate doing backups is for situations similar to this. We know what was on our device at multiple points in time.

Garmin Safety Camera POI

I tried the Garmin safety camera download free trial. Here in Calgary, it did seem to be accurate where I drive. The program is directional, i.e., if there is a camera on only one side of the intersection, it recognizes that so you don't get a warning if going in a direction the other way. The graphics that are displayed are nice in that the warning is in red with a warning of camera. There is no speed trap data in the program.

I downloaded Phantom Alert POI for Calgary and find that there are too many alerts and many are not really accurate, i.e., it says a camera is there but none exits. I've noted here in Calgary that they have camera signs but no camera. I guess that's a cheap way to get people to be cautious which I'm OK with.

I'm anxious to try the POI Factory red light camera file to see how it compares with some of the others I have tried.

I See Two Problems You Have Not Thought Of

craig470 wrote:

It's not that I discount or discredit the efforts of Miss POI and others with this database, but there is one major difference that I will gladly pay for.

The Cyclops files utilize Waypoints rather than a POI file. POI's only allow for a radius, therefor red light and speed cameras will go off no matter which way you are traveling or what road you are on. In Providence, there are several cameras that are on service roads paralleling the highway, causing false warnings. With waypoints, Garmin's Cyclops database knows what street you are on and what direction you are traveling so you get minimal false warnings. I have tested this and it works great. It is nice to approach an intersection the has a camera, but not in the direction you are traveling, and not be annoyed by a notification.

We don't have speed cameras up here, so I don't know how far of a distance they are set for , but the RLC warning was more than ample IMO.

I am glad that Cyclops has finally finished their database for North America and have been waiting for it for a long time. They have been active in Europe and other parts of the world since '02 and their database is extensive and accurate.

I don't think this forum has anything to worry about though, as there will always be people looking to get something for free.

First off the POI factory is free, and not $30 a year.

Next is the problem that every product that is put out on the market: things change. Cameras are added and removed almost on a daily basis. With the vast resource available from the members at the POI Factory our stuff can keep with the changes. For Garmin/Cyclops the problem/expense is going to be the updating the file, not just producing a first article.

The devil is in the details. And updating the file is the stumbling block.

Just delete the file .gpx in POI directory on your Nuvi device.

Garmin Cameras

If Garmin updates the cameras as well as they do their maps, then I would prefer not to pay for something that does not work. We have several major roads that have been closed for over a year and Garmin has yet to update their maps, even when the closures are sent to them.

.

Personally, I stick with the redlight cameras here at POI Factory. I tested Garmin's Safety Cameras using the trial subscription but thought their offering was simply not worth it, one of the reasons being the fixed alert distance of 1/8 mile which is much too close, IMO.

Cyclops Free Trial - Full version or just a partial demo

I downloaded the Free trial version and to say the least was dissapointed.

While traveling in Naperville, I was clearly coming up to a red light camera and got NO alert. Thought it was a glitch then it happened once again before I got on the interstate.

So, while traveling in Davenport Iowa today, same thing.....Passed right through a red light camera and no alert.

Is the free trial just a stripped down demo or the full version?

I'm not impressed to say the least

trial version of safetycameras preinstalled on Nuvi 2460

After the alert, It flashed a message to log in to garmin.com/safetycameras to get more information (presumably to pay for it to continue getting alerts). It didn't really give me as much warning as I'd have liked: had one been going a little over the limit and the light went yellow, it seems it would have been too late.

I just spoke with someone from Garmin and I am being told that they do not have the safety cameras preinstalled in any of their units. You have to go online to get this feature.

I hate to rain on POI Factory's parade...I contributed $20 on June 14, 2009 and I never had luck resolving the constant errors on my Nuvi 255WT.

Well, I just bought a Nuvi 2460LMT and it came with the 30 day trial. I was thrilled not only about how it behaved correctly (as a previous poster pointed out, I never got an alert for a device that was not in my direct path; and no more error dialog boxes). So I just paid the $25.99 for the US annual subscription.

I'm a firm believer in community, I hope you guys don't hate me for saying this. But Garmin really nailed it on this one.

RLC

I've been testing Garmin Safety Camera free trial with the Cyclops software So far I passed thru 4 RLC intersections in and around Cerritos, CA and Los Alamitos CA and got no audio or visual alert Garmin support had me re-download the software so we'll see if that makes a difference.

RLC

Those were among my concerns also. Being unable to search for rlc's and not being able to re-set my preferred alert distances makes me uncomfortable.

Hopefully they'll fix this on a future upgrade soon.

Don I am glad it worked out for you but try checking their poi files some time.I was in Colorado Springs last year and I was looking for Coldwater Creek and the poi from Garmin said it was 49 miles away, well a few days later I was driving around and lo and behold there was a Coldwater Creek about 3 miles away so you see no system is perfect but because of that and other wrong poi's on the Garmin that is why I am here getting my poi's from Poi Factory.Have Fun with your new GPS.
