Are "Waypoints" and "POI" the same thing?

Hi All -
New Nuvi owner here... basic question - I purchased a nuvi 265WT, which the specs say it can accomodate 1000 waypoints. Two questions:

(1) Does this mean that If I use a POI file, I can only use 1000 of the entries? Are custom POI's considered waypoints?

(2) If custom POI's are handled differently than waypoints, would it be advantageous to get an SD card to provide additional storage for custom POI? Are custom POI's only limited by storage capacity?

Just trying to understand all this... if many of these custom POI files have 1000s of entries, I'd imagine I could fill up the Nuvi pretty quickly.

Thanks!

Re: Are "Waypoints" and "POI" the same thing?

No, they are not the same thing.

Waypoints are destinations along a pre-programmed route. POI's are stops, or Points of Interest along a route i.e. places to eat, or attractions.

1) POI's will show the first 50 for a file only. You can set many to a route, however.

2) I use an SD to hold my POI's instead of the GPS. That way, you can transfer the card to another GPS. As well, you save internal memory on the GPS.

Waypoints are sets of

Waypoints are sets of coordinates that identify a point in physical space. The 1000 waypoints you refer to are for your favorites. You can store 1000 of them.

Custom pois are only limited by the storage space you have on your unit.I have many custom pois on my 265 and have no need to use the sd card but you can put custom pois on a sd card.See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 for installing custom pois.Once you install custom pois you will find them by touching where to,extras and touching custom pois last.

Thanks!

Appreciate the clarification, as well as the instructions for installing the POI files.

So will the POI icons appear

So will the POI icons appear on the map?

Say I'm on a two hour drive and have starbucks as one of my POIs. Will I see an icon with the starbucks logo off the freeway.

Maybe, maybe not

There are many variables in getting POI Icons to display. In your example the only ones you would have a chance of seeing would be those along your route. And that's provided you met the other conditions of alerts being set, zoom level, travel speed and ad infinitum.

If you use a TourGuide 'keyword' in the file title and set the distance at more than just a few feet -- up to 200,000 feet then the icons will appear on your map even if they are off route -- when you are within the proximity.

I have a number of articles covering this over on the Garmin Tricks and Tips WEB site.
