What do I need in Vegas

I will be leaving for Vegas in a couple of weeks and wondering what POI files I might need as I am taking my GPS with me and renting a car for about a week.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Casinos and Hotels seem useful, and so does the local restaurants, etc.

A must have!

While in Vegas proper

Leave your car parked at your hotel and use the taxi's, Mono Rails, Bus's or Walk. Your car will become a liability tring to park it, then moving it around. I also recommend a Hand held GPS rather than a automotive unit especially a Garmin because of the poor screen resolution and POI displays.

If you leave Vegas proper (not including Downtown, just take the bus) then by all means you will need a car to visit Red Rock Canyon,Hoover Dam etc.

Don't miss visiting the other Las Vegas area of Lake Las Vegas

Don't miss visiting the other Las Vegas area of Lake Las Vegas just a few minutes East of the strip and not far from Hoover Dam and right next to the Lake Mead National Recreation area. Beautiful area to walk around and the Loews hotel there is a very nice place to stay at and one of the nicer hotels in the Vegas area.

Hotel Location: N36 06.801 W114 55.434

I drove all over the Vegas area in June and my Garmin 885T worked great and found everything I needed and was looking for with the built in POI's.

The pre-loaded Garmin POIs

are accurate for casinos and restaurants. Parking is not a problem as most of the large casinos have extra large parking lots. Traffic on the Strip is CRAZY! If you can utilize the roads that parallel the Strip, you can get around much easier. Dean Martin, the old Industrial, Frank Sinatra Drive, Paradise, Maryland Parkway and any other thoroughfare than the Strip will have you scooting around like a local rather than a tourist. Although with the economy the way it is I have noticed fewer people in many of the casinos and shopping areas, except during Holidays which still bring in the crowds.

There is a new casino you should not miss. It is located about eight miles south of McCarron Airport at St. Rose Parkway and Las Vegas Blvd. Yes, Las Vegas Blvd, (the Strip) does go that far south. Anyway, the new casino is named "M" and it is not to be missed. If you have a car it is worth the drive. Great machines, great sports book, lots of tables, a Baby Cakes Bakery and a buffet that compares to the Paris, or Bellagio any day.

Alrom45, if you need more info contact me via the contact tab here and I will fill you in on whatever I can help with. I am by no means an expert on Las Vegas, but have owned homes here since 1999 and gotten stuck in traffic too many time to count.

Good luck on your upcoming trip.

Lots of cash and a good line

Ha Ha

Yes take lots of cash.. Ha ha. I would use my car. It is easy to use self park at almost all the casinos. Park at Luxor and then take their shuttle tram. People have walked the strip but use the bus to get back. If you use a car then you can go off the strip to Boulder Hwy. and take in the buffet at Sam's Town. The main thing about using a car in Vegas is don't drive down the strip unless you have lots of time.

please!

Not doing anything worth a darn.

.

Don't even mess with self parking, just use the valet. All of the major casinos have free valet parking. You just need to tip the valet a couple of bucks when you pick up your car.

Check on line for the best car rental prices. A list of ATM,s A list of good places to eat. Take a better part of a day to drive around to see what is there first. Then get a cab or a bus to the place you want to go. Have fun and WIN lots

Have a nice trip

My favorite places around Las Vegas are
-- Mt. Charleston (have lunch on an outdoor deck)
-- Red Rock Canyon (take the senic drive and even try a trail on foot)
-- Valley of Fire (State Park N. of town)(Playground of the Gods - spectacular views)
-- Lake Meade (try the N. end too)
-- Hoover Dam (take the tour)
-- Fly Away (indoor sky diving, if you haven't, this is a must. You'll not stop talking about the experience.
-- Death Valley National Park (a little far)

Road Trips AROUND Vegas

We go down to Vegas every year - in fact we are on our way there now. The last couple of times I have had my nuvi and it has been a great help! The Strip is nice to look at but a real pain to drive, and honestly, with all the construction the freeway isn't much better sad . So plotting alternate routes with the GPS can be a great timesaver.

But there is a lot of beautiful scenary in and around Vegas that a lot of tourists never get to see. Here are a some short road trips:

Red Rock Canyon Loop
This one claims to be less than 80 kilometers, but there are LOTS of switchbacks, pull-outs and stops for pictures.

Lake Mead
The round trip is only 120 kilometers, but will likely take three or four hours. There's the lake itself, but also Hoover Dam and Boulder City. Beautidul scenary and history too!

Valley of Fire
This one is a little longer at 200 kilomters but is worth the drive. If you have the time, drive back on the Northshore Road of Lake Mead.

Remember, every ten minutes you spend admiring the scenary is $50 still in your pocket!

Leaving Tomorrow

Thanks to you all who have given me tips for my trip to Vegas. We leave tomorrow.

All I need now is $1.00 from everybody to make it really fun.

cheers..... Al

Not back soon enough

Well we are back home now after a great week in Vegas. We stayed at the Bellagio Hotel and managed to see three shows, the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon. I dropped over $1,000 at the casino I have never learned how to walk away while I am ahead. Maybe next time.

We're Back Too

We have just returned from three weeks in Las Vegas and Luaghlin. We were fortunate enough to not lose a heck of a lot - we golfed a few times and made a few side trips.

We travelled out to Death Valley this time, and the GPS came in very handy once again. It's a two hour drive (one way) but well worth the time.

If you're ever in the Laughlin area, take a trip out to Oatman Arizona, only 30 kilometers east. Lots of biker paraphenalia (it's on Route 66) and the gunfight on Main Street (the only street) is a hoot. Watch out for the burros!

My wife complained about how hot it was down there, and then we hit a winter storm on the way back. Brrr!!

Parking

Unless a major convention was in town, I never had a problem finding parking in Vegas. All of the major hotels on the Strip have free parking, either on a lot or in a garage. You might have to walk a block or two, but that has never been an issue for me.

The last time I went to the downtown area, parking was also free -- with validation.

Then again, I haven't been to Vegas in over a year. I don't believe a car is necessary to get around if you stay near the Strip, but I find it very handy to have anyway, and a virtual must for any off-strip ventures (such as to Hoover Dam/Lake Mead).

Skywalk

If you want to do something unique, skywalk isn't too far away...

Bob: My toys: Nüvi 1390T, Droid X2, Nook Color (rooted), Motorola Xoom, Kindle 2, a Yo-Yo and a Slinky. Gotta have toys.

Welcome Back

Almost all the times I have been down there I have seen packs of bikes on the interstate. I know that there are biker events in Laughlin but it must have turned into a biker destination.

They might have gun fights there as well but I don't think they are staged!

How about Free Wifi POIs?

This would be a plus for any out of towners or those from Canada that need to access the web or internet on their smartphone, notepads, or laptops.

I agree, parking is NOT a problem on the strip. The congested Las Vegas Blvd is another matter but you can still get around by going to the east or west of the Blvd. There is no need to be apprehensive about a car in vegas. In additon, the busses are overly crowded and the waits to board are long.

Gary, those are some good suggestions. Do you have a direct link to "The Bare Facts of the Strip" instead of the link to your main webpage? I am unable to find it using your instructions. BTW, Nice plug for your website. wink
