Mapsource question

Background: I have both a 350 and 765T. I had purchased the lifetime maps for the 350.

I was reading some of the FAQ's on Garmins site for Mapsource. If I am reading right, I cannot do a route in Mapsource and send it to my 765T. Is this correct?

Also, as far as registering my 765T. I haven't done it yet. I'm thinking that they will have a map update in October and I will be within the 60 days thing. If I register now, will I still be able to update the maps in October or do you have to do the update when you register.

Carol

.

The nuvi 7xx series is capable of storing routes. You can send routes from MapSource to the unit.

It doesn't matter when you register it as long as it's done within 60 days of the date the the unit first acquires a satellite lock.

You should go ahead and register now, so you don't forget to do so. You can wait to download the map update (if available) as long as you do so within those same 60 days.

Watch the 60 days

My understanding is that the 60 day clock starts from your first satelite view....so if you have used the unit your 60 day countdown had begun for the free map download. Since you are not absolutely certain of when the map will be released just watch that you don't go outside your window.

I registered my 780 and I was informed I had a new map. I believe I could have come back later for it, but I am not certain I could have bailed out of the upgrade. I went ahead and downloaded the 2010.20 map.

So then what was I reading on Garmin's site that said Mapsource was only good on the maps for the one unit and something about an unlocking code? I was thinking that was the 350 that I bought the lifetime for. I'm confused.

Re: registering. I may wait for another week or two just to make sure everything is OK with the unit. Got it from Costco so I can return it.

I set a reminder for myself in my PDA. Thanks,

Right. The MAPS are only good for a SINGLE UNIT.

But you can use MapSource with any number of compatible units.

When you send the data, you will be sending ROUTES not MAPS. So it will be fine.

Which Maps?

OK this is where I'm confused. Mapsource has a map in it. If this map is good for a single unit how can I use it for any number of units? Forgive my being dense. Maybe I need more coffee

MapSource

The map is tied to a single unit; Mapsource SOFTWARE is not.

MapSource and Routes

You are sending only the waypoints (locations) and the route that connects them. The map is not included in the transfer.

I think you are thinking that the points and routes are "attached" to a map, so they cannot be sent separately. That's not correct.

blah

The way i read it, the 60 days is from the first time a satellite signal is acquired. I dont know if that can be reset or not. It appearst he device stores that. Any of you know if a "hard reset" or whatever will clear that?

.

No a hard reset will not clear it. A "hard reset" really only clears user data. The satellite lock information is stored in a data area that is not accessible to the user.

Because as I said, you aren't sending MAPS to the unit. You are only sending DATA (routes, waypoints, tracks). This DATA is not locked to a single unit.

Since your new nuvi 765T already has it's own maps, there are no worries.

Only One Unit

sadievan - I downloaded 2010.20 maps for my 350 and the current version of Mapsource was installed on my computer, along with the upgraded maps. I have been using it (Mapsource) to create routes for my 765T, with no problems.

Thank You

Thank You. That clears it up for me. Yes I was thinking it was sending the maps with the routes.

I also have a 350 with lifetime map subscription. When I updated the maps, Mapsource was installed for me too.

Mapsource and Nuvi 760

I have been trying now for over a week to transfer my favorites (as waypoints) to Mapsource. I keep getting a error message about a temp file. I did contact garmin tech support more than once. this is the last response I got from them yesterday:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

"Unfortunately, I am not going to be able troubleshoot this through email any further.
Please call into our Product Support Line for further assistance.
I do apologize for the inconvenience, but I think to get your issue fixed someone will need to troubleshoot this on the phone."

If anyone has fix for this problem, please contact me by e mail. If they couldn't fix it by e mailing I don't have much faith in them soving the problem by phone.

Additional Information

It may be helpful if you provided the version of Mapsource you are using, the PC OS version, and the specific error message you are receiving.

I just copied my Favorites from my 750 to a Windows Vista PC without a problem.

I have the most current version of Mapsource 6.15.6

I also have a windows vista pc. here is a copy of the error message it's very long:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no" ?>

So, if you purchase the

So, if you purchase the lifetime map upgrade on a 765T, do you get a copy of Mapsource too for use on your PC? I last used Mapsource on my eMap and it was very handy.

Mapsource

will be installed on your PC when you download your first map update.

several months ago. The XML_DOMERRORHANDLER.CPP error indicates an error while creating a back up file in the "TEMP" folder on the "C:" drive. You will need to clean out the "temp" folder, and then try to load the data again. Please follow these steps to clean out the "temp" folder.

1. Go to Start and click on Run
2. Type in %temp% and click ok, this will bring you to your temp files
3. Go to edit and click on select all
4. Then go to file and click on delete
5. Once the files start being deleted there may be some that will give you an option to select yes or no, select no you don't want to delete it
6. Some may simply say that the file can not be deleted that is ok because those are needed files, once you click on ok in that pop up the process will stop
7. You can start it again by holding down the "Ctrl" key and then clicking on the file that is first in the remaining list, that is the file that could not be deleted
8. Now the remaining files will still be highlighted in blue and the first one will not be
9. Now to the left of the screen click on the red "X" for delete all selected files, the deletion process will start up again
10. Keep repeating these steps until the temp files have been cleaned out except the ones that need to stay
11. Once this has been completed, empty out the recycle bin and restart the computer.

Been there, done that

Justaguy,

I did the procedure you outlined a few times each time I still get the same error. If you have any addtional information let me know,

What means to "add a route"?

I also have a Garmin 765T and the routing software does not seem to use a certain road (eventhough physically there and shown on the map). Is there a way to add a route that uses this road when I press "GO HOME" for example? I have also tried the option to uncheck "use dirt roads" and it still dos not work.

Not surprised

I am not surprised it did not work. The temps folder contains temporary files created by applications. In this case, your tmp file was probably created by MS itself and it cannot read it back for some reason.

Justaguy, it probably worked for you because you did something different the second time (different POI, different content, ...).

spectrum44, it would help if you could explain the steps to reproduce the problem. All the steps. If you have a special file that you load in MS, you should share it with us. You could also try to removed POIs in that file until it works. Once the problem is gone, start adding new stuff until it crashes. Then you will know what cause the issue.

What I have done

Turbocc,

All I have done is try to transfer my favorites, from my 760 to Mapsource, When I click transfer from device to Mapsource (as waypoints) I get the error message. I could try to remove the favorites but it will involve deleting the favorites one at a time from the Nuvi, the file on the the Nuvi is current.gpx I do have the favorites saved as individual gpx files on my c drive.

If you want to get favorites

If you want to get favorites in Mapsource while you try to resolve the transfer problem, try this.

Copy your favorite gpx file from your nuvi to your pc. You can the open it in Mapsource. File>Open works or you can drag and drop gpx file in Mapsource.

If you make changes, select File>Save As (change file type to gpx).

Hope this helps.

.

Good point!

If you can reproduce the problem just by opening a copy of Current.gpx in MS, then it will be easy to isolate the problem as long as the problem is not the file transfer by MS.

Jthawkin@comsast.net and Turboccc

I tried to open current.gpx in mapsource. I got the following error:

"Current.gpx is not a valid Mapsource file and could not be opened"

Try EPE

Try to open Current.gpx with Extra_POI_Editor and save it back as a GPX. Hopefully, it will make it compatible with MS, but not too much to make it crash.

EPE can be found at turboccc.wikispaces.com/Downloads

Opened in Extra POI Editor

Turboccc I opened current.gpx in Extra poi editor and saved it as a garmin.gpx file. I got the same error message from Mapsource, "not a valid mapsource file". If you would like to see the file I could e-mail it to you.

.

Spectrum44,

On which planet did you go? You have a couple POI with garbage characters (like these: ఀ댤㡱㡱) in the city and state fields. I sent you an email with an example. Once removed your file is good.

Thank You

I responded to your e-mail I will look for the two bad POIs. After I find them I will try again to transfer them to Mapsource

Problem solved, Thank you Turboccc. The POIs that had junk in them were not from another planet smile but they were from send to gps from google maps and bing. I will be checking any POIs I send from those sites from now on

Mapsource 765t

I purchased my 765t about 3 weeks ago. I tried to DL Mapsource to edit my routes. I couldnt get it unless I have some Mapsource product on my HD. So, I called Garmin (35min wait). He told 3 days ago that there would not be any updates until after my free update expired (Oct 24). So, I went ahead and updated my Garmin (2.25 hours download). Along with the download, I saw Mapsource came with it. I have been creating and uploading a route we are doing in another week from NC to MN. About 1200 miles. After choosing my route (avoiding Chicago!), I found out that I had to make 14 waypoints, or my 756t would try to calculate its own route, sending me on state roads, and too close to Chicago traffic. So yea, Mapsource works well with the 765. So, if you have your own route you want to travel on, be sure to make enough waypoints to prevent the unit from recalculating to something else. Hope this bit of info helps someone! smile
