Getting an 885T

I've got an 780 now. Had it a week or so. Like it a lot, but miss some features of the old GPS.

So... I am going to get the 885T and give the 780 to my wife.

I see that some features are not on the 885T but don't really see me missing them. 3d Buildings ?? No ecoroute... Neither mean much to me.

I did take a peak at the 1490T but that has even less features, some of which I would miss. Liked the speed alert feature... strange company that doesn't come out with an everything version.

Features I want... See speed at all times, voice commands sound like a good thing. Doppler Weather (I'm a weather guy)... Lane change is not nearly as important.

So right now I am looking for the best price... Tiger GPS has them for $409 brand new. Best price so far.

I am actually taking a trip to Laughlin, NV late tonight, so I won't get to play with the new unit until after I get back so I most likely won't order it till then.

And it's doubtful that they ever will release a full featured version. If something like that were created, people would keep it and use it for a much longer period of time...Garmin wants people to buy a GPS every year or even sooner. Hence the "feature peppering"...have a ton of units that all have a slightly different feature set. Each new model release will have new features with old features (likely ones that many are even used to) conveniently removed. To get a new feature almost always requires the user to lose features in the process.

This is the nuvi line... rolleyes

Love my 885t

I have been using the 885t for about 2 months now and love it.
Sometimes the voice prompts hears what it wants to, but then again it may be my voice or the ambient noise in the vehicle.
Overall I rate it a 9.5.
I never had 3d buildings before so I cannot miss what I never had.
Good choice.
Check out Cosco and Amazon.com to compare prices to what you mentioned

855

Bought an 855 for my parents - my 90 year old dad uses his constantly...

Getting an 885t

I think Best Buy has the 885t for $399 right now.

I'm finding the 885T to be a nice upgrade from my 760

I'm finding the 885T to be a nice upgrade from my 760. I was very happy with the 760 but three things that come with the 885T really make it much nicer to work with.

The first is that it just goes into suspend mode when you shut it down so it is ready to go in seconds with no wait for the unit to boot up or load maps.

The second thing is the voice activation works far better than I expected and it has been a easy transition and it also works great for entering addresses using the voice, much much quicker than by manually entering them. It even works with the radio on at a reasonable level.

The third thing is the turn lane display at the top and the junction view.

Have seen it for sale around the $400 mark at a few stores including Best Buy this week.

Unit arrived today

I got the 885T today. Will be playing with it tonight though I have already pretty much set it up.

I moved the 8gb card with my POI's on it to it from my 780 and will put a new 8gb card in that and when I give it to my wife.

I liked the 780 quite a bit except for the lack of current speed showing on the display.

We took it to Laughlin NV for a 4 day trip and worked great. Wish I had the 885T before then as it would have been a good trip.

Won money in Laughlin, so maybe I should go back and do it again.

Dell has it today for about $310~$320.

This is a very good deal.

They have the 855 for $329, not the 885T

Early Garmins had it all, then they realized that they could make money by taking features out of one unit and selling them back in another, while droping another and cheapening the unit construction.
Garmin isn't alone, Magellan did the same thing.
