Chicago Red Light Camera update?

Hey all,

I don't currently have access to the red light camera file, and am considering subscribing.

Can anyone tell me what the latest updates to the Chicago red light database were? I know the city is currently installing the new cameras like crazy. I was driving south on Irving Park a few days ago and saw a new camera being put up on Irving Park/Pulaski.

Is that one active in the database?

Here is the intersection at

Here is the intersection at Irving Park Rd. & Pluaski Rd.

This camera does not yet appear in the database, it may not be live yet. But you can be sure it will added when it comes up live.

There are several choices for different icons and sounds or alert messages for the camera files. You can download those for free and play with them to your heart's content. As you have a Nuvi 260, you will need the WAV file for sounds and the SOX.EXE file in the same program folder as POI loader for the alert sound to play. As to youtube, there are a lot of different files available that show how these files work. The world doesn't need yet another.

BobDee thanks for your

BobDee thanks for your response. That camera is a very fresh install, so you may be right in stating that it isn't yet live. It's up and standing, though they haven't posted the street signs to warn drivers of its presence yet.

I was just gauging the accuracy and completeness of the database. I do a lot of city driving and having an outdated poi collection on my gps isn't doing me any good. =]

This file is updated each

This file is updated each week, let me know when it is active in an email and I will get it added to the file.

Miss POI

Right. I'm just wondering

Right. I'm just wondering how many Chicago based members provide info and how accurate the list is. smile I'll try them out and see - no other way.

Quick FYI. Just drove

Quick FYI.

Just drove through that intersection again earlier this morning and the street-signs are up. The camera is definitely armed and ready to flash...

and no cameras where i live wahahahha smile

Go ahead and trust the CURRENT RL file.

Thanks to Daley we have a new camera or so every week.

The RL camera is well maintained especially in Chicago. We might be missing 1 or 2 due to timing but I strongly believe they are all there.

There are a few locals that keep that file current by reporting all known/verified changes.

Welcome to the madness of RL cameras in Chicago.

Yeah, they're popping up

Yeah, they're popping up quite often now. My morning drive is only roughly 5 miles round trip, and yet I now pass 3 intersections with the RL camera. Damn you Pulaski Road! smile

I will do my best to help keep the file current as well. With as much city driving as I do it'll benefit me as well. smile

Definite Help

I'll be driving to Chicago form Long Island to visit my grandkids. Usually fly but getting tired of delays and just waiting around the airport. Anyway, the redlight file will undoubtedly be of great help.

I"m going into the city all

I"m going into the city all the time and it seems every other block there's a camera. I know that some have been moved because I see the warning signs out but camera has been removed.

Chicago... Crook County

In Chicago they are removing a lot of the big boxes and using those small white cameras. I know becuase one got me!! I didn't believe it, but the web site gave me the option to view the violation. Yes, I blew the red light. I still think the yellow was only about 1 second though.

Anyway, at this point, since almost every intersection in the city has those little white cameras, any intersection can be a RL camera.

I wonder, is there a law that says they have to put up warning signs?

I would think so...

I would think so, because the one that was just put up on Irving Park and Pulaski (large camera) wasn't active until they put the warning street signs up a few days later...

On a side-note, I just got a letter from our local alderman stating that he was successful in arranging countown timers for the intersections that had the RL cameras in our neighborhood. I guess a lot of people were complaining about the timing of the lights... Crook county sounds just about right. smile

Red Light Cameras

Two were recently installed in Orland. Anytime I notice a red light camera and my GPS doesn't chime, I right down the location. When I get back I email Miss POI with the information. Now if everybody did this, the Red Light Camera file (which is updated weekly) would be the best one could get. So start jotting down the red light cameras you find wink

what do you mean "would be the best"?

You do realize that it is not necessary to "jot down" anything don't you? You can save the location just by tapping the vehicle icon on the screen and hitting the Save button -- that location is saved to your favorites.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

I'll do my part.

I'll do my part around the city of Chicago. Once I have the red light camera file running on my gps I'll see if there are any missing from the db.

burbs

they're popping up all over the suburbs as well. with the current economic state it will only get worse with these things.

also they are considering speed cameras as well across the state.

Unsafe safety

I've seen at least two accidents caused by these new red lights cameras. Drivers are afraid to go through the yellow and get rear ended.

report them1

If you find one that's not in the database, report it. they installed one by my house, and it was in the database in less than a week after it was put up since I was the first to chime in. I ran across another which had never been reported in Addison, so I let her know about that one.
As for the cameras, hope nobody wearing a Ronald McDonald mask walks up with a paintball gun and paints the camera lens.

edit: one more thing, if you are in the city I'd recommend setting the distance manually to less than the default of 1320 feet-that's too much, and all the cameras on adjacent streets will drive you nuts.

Just slow down and be ready to stop, then there be no problem

I would imagine the accidents you seen are cause because the car that was hit was being tailgated, not necessarily because he was afraid to go through the light.

Let's be real here. If you get a camera ticket you deserve it, and have no one to blame but yourself, especially if you have the POI files in your GPSr.

I would have to agree

I would have to agree with shadesofgrey that in some
cases the red light camera would become cause of an accident.(people trying to avoide entering the crossing even in the yellow light because of the posted red light camera warning and getting reareneded) I have seen this happening. I think RLCs are more of a revenue generating device. But that is just my opinion.

Don't agree

Are you perpetually prepared for the driver in front of you to slam on their brakes? Even if you are, can the SUV behind you stop in time?

Sorry, I don't agree that if in ALL cases if you get ticketed by these cameras you deserve it. Some intersections that host these cameras have been found to have a shorter yellow than legally allowed. I find that disturbing.

Red Light Cameras +++

I've run into two that were not yet listed (they are now) in the South suburbs of Chicago. The lights usually advertise with a sign and so far have been quite noticeable. Is any body keeping track of the "police surveillance cameras". Not that I plan to do illegal acts, but it might be nice to know when the police are watching you. There are a few of the red and blue flashing light cameras out South here.

Zapca

blue flashing cameras

They put those in real high crime areas. If you are in an area with the flashing cameras, that's usually gangbanger territory.

Elston / Irving Park

Submitting a red light camera on Elston and Irving Park in Chicago.

Running the redlight cameras beta file and that camera is missing from the database.

blue flashing cameras

Yeh, I always figured that was the case yet there are a few in the South suburbs and in several Metra lots, one of which is relatively "high class" I guess it's like "let it be known they're going to be watched if they come around"

Zapca
