750 Just won't Turn On

Help:

My 750 was working fine, then all of a sudden wouldn't turn on.

Any ideas on how to re-start or am I doomed to sending it in to Garmin?

Turn On

My 780 at times is very slow to start up. What you might try is plugging it into your home charger. That might boost it to start. If no home charger, try hooking it to your computer, again, hopefully, it will give it a boost. That’s all I can think of. Maybe it will have to go back to Garmin. Good luck.

Don't have

I don't have a home charger. Have tried connection to vehicle and computer with no results.

What happens when you connect it to your computer?

That will probably give you a clue... It may just need a charge and your computer will do it where other methods may not...

I believe I have a Garmin-bound brick. Will let you know what they say when I call.

Though not exactly the same procedure (a slight 4" drop was added), it is back on.

very strange

You know, this happened to the Nuvi 750 I bought as a gift for my folks as well.

I was helping them with some options in the Garmin. Turned it off, and it wouldn't turn back on again.

The battery was 3/4 full. So it was not the battery problem.

However, I did plug the Nuvi 750 back into the wall for a bit. Then 10 - 20 minutes later, tried to turn it back on, and voila, the 5th try, it turned back on.

It hasn't happened since, according to my parents. Here's hoping it won't be a recurring problem...

How I fixed the "Won't turn on" problem

Why my Nuvi 765T quit working and would not turn back on I tried another cig lighter, in another car, and tried the USB cable to charge. Nada.

I tried all the suggestions above. Nada.

I finally held the "On" switch to the left for about 15 seconds and Voila! It works. The battery shows 75% charge.

Hope this helps someone.

won't turn on

Happened to my Nuvi 760. I charged it up for 24 hours and it started up again.

Another possibility

I know you've said it's probably not the battery, but see this post as well. Someone with the described problem may be helped by this post:

350 with similar issue

I have a 350, it is also very difficult to turn on. I have found that if I simply plug the unit into the car adapter it will turn on as soon as it is plugged into the lighter socket. Don;t even need to hit the on button. To turn off, I unplug the lighter and let it turn off in 30 seconds on its own.

Anyone else experience this, and hopefully find a fix?

The 350 has a known issue with the power switch inside breaking off. There were a couple of posts about independent repair companies who could fix that. Or, as you said, just operate via the touch screen when it detects power or loss of power.

One of the threads about this was:

Try This

You can try unplugging the battery and then plugging it back in. Worked for my bricked 755t. Watch how to here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXXzsi9Ures

You only have to unplug the battery cable and wait 15 seconds or so. You don't have to remove the battery like they do in the video.

Bad power button

Thanks! Not a big deal since I can still work it, it does removes the ability to use while walking around. (Unless I carry the lighter plug and hope for a good samaritan). :/

Works

I held the "On" Switch as stated and it worked.

It worked!

I had the same problem with my Garmin Nuvi 750 after installing the newest map update in March 2010. I shut the unit off and it wouldn't turn on.

Finally held the power button to the left for about 15 seconds like m25443 said and it turned back on.

Thank you m25443 for posting!

power button...

sometimes my 750 gets confused and needs a repeat turn-on by moving the power switch a bit. holding to the left also helps. A full charging session wouldn't hurt either.

When my Garmin 880 battery

When my Garmin 880 battery drains after a few days and won't turn back on, I use my Motorola cell phone home charger to charge the Garmin battery. It seems to charge faster than the car charger or a USB cable. Even if the Garmin does not turn on any other way, the Motorola charger always turns it back on in a few seconds and then recharge the battery faster.

I've found with the 885

If the battery runs down to where it won't turn on, remove the battery, plug it in on the car charger, turn it on and then put the battery back in.

Garmin Bad Power Button

Anyone with info on how to fix the bad power button? Thanks.

A Festivus Miracle!

Yes, you helped me a lot! I could not get my Garmin 265WT to come on no matter what I did. Then I followed your suggestion to hold the switch in the "on" position for a few seconds...probably about 10.....and my Garmin Nuvi came to life!

It is a Festivus miracle!!!
Thanks!

Nuvi 1690 won't turn on

Like M5443, I was in the middle of a long trip when my 1690 decided to go south without me. Nothing worked to restart it. Ended up using my phone; not as nice but it got me there. After finding and reading the "held switch for 15 seconds" I tried that on mine. (Different setup but same principle)
Voila! Nuvi now works fine. (And duh! I'm a computer tech. Why didn't I thnk of this at the time redface ) Thanks so much

Nuvi 750 won't turn on

I want thank you for your post. This just happened to me after having my 750 since September 2008. This thing has been bullet proof. I just read your post and did what you said. It came on, now I'm afraid to turn it off!
We came home from a trip, I turned it off but left it plugged in the car overnight. I took it out the next morning and attempted to turn it on. NADA! When it did come on it was fully charged. I nearly started to take it apart to remove and test the battery before it came back on.
Has anyone determined what causes this?
Thanks again!

the battery

The units have circuitry which checks the amount of run-time in the battery by looking at the charge. If the battery is gone in that it won't hold a charge for more than a few minutes, the unit won't turn on. Battery replacement has fixed almost all the complaints in the past.

Illiterate? Write for free help.

Sounds like the end of the line is comming.

My 750, which I bought in December 2007, is showing signs of age. The battery is slowly holding it's charge less and less. I am down to about 10 - 15 minutes. Now I have to make up my mind to replace the battery or purchase a new one. If I didn't have the lifetime map update it would be a no brainer. What to do, what to do?

Get a battery for your 750

even if you decide to buy a new GPS. Your 750 can be used as a backup or given to a friend or family member. I recently replaced the battery in my 755T. Purchased on eBay, cost was less than $7

Sounds like good advice

I am keeping it!

My 760, which is the same as your 750, is one of the best units ever available from Garmin. If the battery needs replacement I am going to do it. There is no way I would give it away to a family member!

Nuvi 750 Freezes

I downloaded the 2012.40 update and was having no problems using the 750 while traveling Easter weekend. On our return trip the maps would suddenly freeze so I would turn it off and back on. Now it freezes before you can even get to View Map or to enter an address. It's basically a brick.

Any ideas on what the problem is? I haven't contacted Garmin yet and I'm considering downloading the 2012.10 update just to see if there is a bug in the latest update.

My 760 did this. I did a factory reset and it's working well, now. Hold your finger on the lower right corner and power up.

This appears to have fixed my problem. After I deleted my Trip Log, I was able to access the maps and start entering destinations again. I haven't taken it out for a test drive yet but at least it's not freezing up as soon as I try to access the map.

Nuvi 750

Worked with new battery now doesn't

I have a Garmin 750 that quit working. So i bought a new battery, installed it and it began working fine. I connected it to my pc and copied all the files to the pc for backup purposes. When I disconnected from the pc and restarted it, it would begin to load the maps and then show the link to computer icon and freeze there. I then connected a usb car charger to it and it worked fine. I turned it off and it showed that it was charging. I left it connected to the car charger overnight (connected to my home emergency battery pack). Now today it won't work again. I removed the battery and reconnected the car charger and it won't turn on. Reinstalled the battery with and without the car charger and still no go. I tried connecting to my pc by usb and still nothing. I really like this unit and would like to get it working. I had an old Nuvi 200 which uses the sames battery. So I installed it and connected the usb charger and it worked. I let it charge then the garmin turned off. Any ideas or suggestions? Ok I resolved it myself. It was the USB port.

A battery replacement...

is so, so easy to do...and sometimes fun, when you think that it cures your problem in less than 15 minutes...good luck!

How my started working again

My 755 was working fine. Stopped, park, came out later and it would power up. Blank screen. No turn on. Would power up form the car cradle, my computer, or wall charger. Held the power button on for 30 seconds - nothing. Plugged it back in to the wall charger and it powered up.

Yea - while I'd like a newer GPS with a bigger screen, I also enjoy the mp3 player this unit has.

I was helped by comments on this site - hope my comment can help someone too.
