3597LMTHD and iPhone 5s

Just FYI, I tried to pair the Bluetooth contained in my 3597LMTHD with my new iPhone 5s. I kept getting a pairing error. I raised the issue with Garmin, and they reported that their units are not compatible with either the iPhone 5 or 5s. I find that hard to believe, given that the 3597LMTHD is in the 2013 model line, the iPhone 5 has been out for a year, and even my 2009 Camry's Bluetooth pairs just fine with each of these phones.

I mentioned to Garmin their explanation was a bit unbelievable, and they merely said this may or may not be addressed in a future FW update. Nice.

Perhaps ...

... a matter of propriety software or royalties on either/both their sides? rolleyes

iPhone has been an issue for quite sometime

I have been waiting for my Dodge Radio to be completely compatible with the iPhone for sometime now.It would always connect and be able to use phonebook and make/recieve calls, but it never did the text messaging through hands free like it should. Went through all kinds of hoops with both companies and they both blamed the other. Eventually as updates kept coming out for the iPhone, I kept finding more functionality through it. It still won't send a text, but once in a while I am able to read a text when it comes in. This all leads me to believe it is Apple that is not making their equipment compatible, and they don't seem to care, because people will buy it anyway.

I had similar pairing issues

I had similar pairing issues with my Google Nexus 4 phone with 3597. Garmin support told me that my phone was not a tested device.
I would suggest you to completely remove your nuvi 3597 BT profile from your iphone. Reset your 3597 and then try to pair. The problem is if one device keeps some trace of previous attempt, it will not work.

Garmin Smartphone Link and iPhone 5

According to the notes on Garmin Smartphone 1.5.1, it is optimized for iPhone 5, so Garmin's compatibility statement is in disagreement with their app. Smart Link links via Bluetooth.

Bluetooth 4.0

The iPhone 5 & newer models support Bluetooth 4.0 - if devices you're trying to connect to don't support that, there can be issues...

Normally a device is downward compatible to older versions of a standard so it should be compatible with version 3.0 if that is what the Nuvi is using.

Well, I am using Google

Well, I am using Google Nexus 4 running on JB 4.3. This phone is running on BT 4.0. I had issues pairing my phone in the beginning but now it works fine.

And the "U" in USB is supposed to mean "Universal"... but it isn't... backward compatibility doesn't always happen.

I have both Iphone 5 and 3597 and I have no bluetooth issue. Everything works find. Did you reset your phone before you tried to pair?

I was finally able to pair my wife's iPhone 5 with the Nuvi. I then cleared out the devices saved in the Nuvi and tried with the iPhone 5s. No dice. I asked Garmin again why the iPhone 5 would pair but not the 5s. They simply said the 5s is not a supported device.

At least I got the 5 to work ... should my wife ever drive my car. wink

paring iPhone 6 to Garmin NUVI 3597

Paring iPhones with Garmin NUVI 3597. I opened settings on 3597 and clicked bluetooth then clicked the 4 bars in left hand corner and when new window opened clicked the restore button. Then opened settings on iPhone 6 clicked bluetooth and it began searching for discoverable devices. When the paring info appeared on both devices I accepted it on the iPhone 6 and everything works fine. Garmin must not like Apple to give such advice to a Garmin user.

I have also noticed that

I have also noticed that Garmin apps are more Android friendly. I had Google Nexus 5 phone and Smartlink would connect seamlessly but now I have iphone 6, it does not connect automatically everyday.

No Problem here

I paired my iPhone 5s to both my 3597's with no issues. Works with OS7 and OS8.2.

Make sure you are running the latest firmware on your 3597.
