What am I doing wrong?

I own a Nuvi 200. I downloaded the Starbucks files including logo and mp3. The grey dot shows up fine at each location, but not the logo or the voice announcing the location is coming up. I followed the directions on this site. I am wondering what I did wrong. Thanks

Do you have sox.exe in your poi loader folder?

Did you convert the mp3 file to a wav file? Did you rename the bmp and wav file so it is exactly the same as the poi file, excluding the extension? Are you sure you don't have double extensions?

Given that your 200 doesn't play mp3 files, you will need to convert the mp3 to a wav and then add Sox.exe to the folder containing POI Loader for the custom audio alert to work?

For the bmp file not to work, you would almost certainly have not used identically named files (except for the extension), or else you have double extensions.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Thanks

I appreciate your quick response. What is Sox.exe?
Update. Downloaded sox.exe and put it in my Garmin folder on the c;//drive. Will give it all a try tomorrow.

Next question, if I want to delete any POI's I install from here, what is the procedure?

Thanks, I am quite newbie at this.

Do a search on "Sox.exe wav" and you will find all the details.

Edit: I had your original post open for some time before hitting the Quote button -- then when it brought in the changed (updated) text, I didn't notice the change.

POI Loader will let you erase all the custom poi on your unit as an option. When you load new POI you overwrite the old POI.gpi file with the new data, so deleting it isn't needed.

Procedures

Don't mean to highjack this thread, but this is another example of why this site should create a detailed tutorial for loading POI files. I know there are different FAQ threads, but there isn't a comprehensive tutorial that walks you from step A to step Z.

Maybe some of the folks who were arguing about "standards" could spend a couple of days putting together some tutorials.

Didnt work

With much anticipation I used the Nuvi today on the way to work and....no icons, no voice telling me Starbucks was ahead, just a grey dot. I hate being ignorant.

.

Ok, my recommendation is that you tackle one issue at a time. Get the icons working first. Once you have that done, then work on the Custom Alert Sounds. Note that you can SIMULATE a route on your device rather than having to actually drive to test the sounds.

As to the icons, be sure to DOUBLE (AND TRIPLE) check for double file extensions (ie Starbucks.bmp.bmp). This will cause the icons NOT to load. Be sure when you are checking the file extensions in your browser that you have your file browser set NOT to hide the file extensions. Many browsers hide the extensions by default.

Then double check that the files are located on your computer in the same folder as the Custom POI files.

Now, as to the Custom Alerts, are you getting the DEFAULT sound? Did you SET an alert when you loaded the file?

If you aren't getting any alert, you will need to run POI Loader in Manual Mode and SET alerts.

If you are getting the default alert but not the Custom Alert Sound, then again DOUBLE check the file extensions. Then for the nuvi 200, you will need the sounds to be WAV files and you will need to double check that you are using the CORRECT version of SOX.EXE and that you place it in the correct folder on your computer in accordance with the instructions.

This post may help with the sound issue

If you aren't sure about checking double extensions then with the folder open click on tools>folder options>view then make sure the box "hide extensions of known file types" is not checked..

You are all wonderful for helping me out. I have gotten the icons to display (double extensions was the issue) But still no alert. Little bit more help here? Specifically, SET(ting) an alert and what is the correct SOX.exe version?
