What a difference a week makes

Last Thursday it was snowing in Baton Rouge. It's not something that happens very often, and it was a record for the earliest snowfall date. Today the temperature is up to 77 degrees where it is forecasted to stay for the next 4 days.

Any funny stories due to bad directions before GPS?

Before GPS sent me on strange routes, where I would turn right, make a u-turn, then turn right all at the same light (thanks Never Lost), I remember Map Quest.

I'll never forget when I was going to a resort west of Cleveland, OH and Mapquest sent me onto a road into the middle of a cornfield. I should have listened to my spouse who saw a sign that said turn left, but I was going to follow the directions

Not all was lost however. When we dead ended in the corn field, we saw a sight we'd always remember: A groundhog looking up at us eating an ear of corn with giant corn husk whiskers.

Sometimes it's good to get lost.

Winter Arriving?

Forecast today for ice and snow from chicago to north of Miwaukee - a couple inches (south) to a foot (north) by tomorrow mid-day.

They're forecasting it to start late this afternoon in the Chicago area and by 9 tonight in Milwaukee.

Winter Weather Storm Warning will be in effect...

Mmmmmmmm - Burger Scented Cologne!

Sounds like a bad Homer Simpson episode. Burger King has allegedly come out with a cologne that includes the scent of flame broiled meat, appropriately called "Flame."

What more could that meat loving person want for Christmas than to perpetually smell like a flame broiled hamburger!

Surprisingly, they have a web site - www.firemeetdesire.com which includes a Barry White sounding crooner!

You just can't make this stuff up! rolleyes

Snow is Gone?

With all the comments about the snow being gone I feel like I missed something here in Vegas.

Dark and Depressing in Northern England :-(

Roll on the 21st of the month, when the days slowly start to get longer again. The downside of living at 53º North, is that it only seems to be properly light for about 3 hours at this time of year sad

...The Nüvi's not helping either - with its day/night display. I dropped my daughter off at school this morning and it was still in night-mode. It will be back in night-mode again very shortly, long before I pick her up.

The key words are Just and another! I feel real bad for those with out seasons. oh wait you have Hurricane season I forgot.

I am looking forward to a white Christmas, lived down there in 33901 for several years you can keep the low wages, it was costing me about 12.00 per hour for Sunshine, and higher insurance, utilities and property taxes made Florida less attractive to me and i guess a lot of others as well, three of the nation's largest moving companies say they're now transporting more family's and their belongings out of Florida than into it, Now what does that tell you?

No thanks, you can keep Florida.

More snow

Toronto being hit again today, it started around 8:00 am, and we should have about 20cm by the end tonight. It doesn't sound like much but when at least half of cars don't have snow tires and most of the drivers can't drive in snow... The best plan is to stay off the roads.

60 hours...

60 hours until we're in the air and on our way to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. My wife and I CAN'T WAIT! It's been wintry here in Cleveland, and etmps are expected to drop for next week. High in the 20's. In Punta Cana, high in the 80's.

Happy Holidays, everyone! Have a happy Hanukkah or a Merry Christmas, or both. Your choice. And best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year!

Made It To The Store!

We had about a foot of snow yesterday and last night. Walked through it about 50 yards to my garage with just soggy slippers over bare feet. All of a sudden before my wife left to Canada she said I didn't have any socks.

The reason I went to the store is we have another Winter Storm Warning up for tonight into Monday. I needed to get supplies. Also bought 6 pairs of socks...I wonder how long they'll last.

We've had over 85 inches of snow so far this season and it's not even officially Winter yet!

~

Blizzard Warning tonight until 6PM Sunday here in NC Iowa... had about 8" Overnight thursday into Friday - another 4 on the way this afternoon - and 20 to 40 mph winds coming tonight into tomorrow to blow all that fluffy white crap into massive drifts that I'll eventually have to clear from the driveway and sidewalk... oh joy.

re: Made It To The Store

I forgot to add that it was -11F outside. Kinda cold to be out in wet bare feet.

Christmas Goodies

Just finished helping the better half make fudge, pumkin roll, and peanut brittle. Love that stuff. Waiting for more snow this afternoon. Had about 6 inches yester day and more every day til after christmas. Merry Christmas to all. grin

I drive my "beater" 4x4 Chevy Tahoe in snow.

No, it won't go through everything, and it certainly doesn't stop on a dime. But the extra weight makes it less likely to get stuck in snow than my Camry. And if some idiot runs into me, it can take an impact. mrgreen

I had two accidents in the last 14 years. Both times, I was rear-ended at a red light on a snowy road. rolleyes

4x4

No 4x4 will get through anything. They often take awhile to plow this private road after a storm. If the snow is much higher than the ground clearance on your vehicle, you ain't going nowhere.

I like the capabilities a 4x4 provides, but I'm not going to be stupid and go through roads and trails that are not plowed in the winter, etc.

Many years ago I left Banff, Canada in winter with just a thin shirt on. I didn't worry about it because the heater would warm me up. However I had blown a head gasket, all the coolant had leaked out and the heater was just blowing cold air on me. By the time I got warning and the engine overheated and stopped, I was shaking so bad I couldn't even get the key in the trunk lock to get my jacket. An F-150 soon stopped and picked me up, and had a plaque on the dash that said "High Output Heater". I've never been so glad to see anything in my life. The car was towed into town and fixed, it took weeks to get the chill out of my bones. Since then I don't like to take too many chances driving in the winter.

Potential for light ice

We're all set for hopefully minor ice/sleet event overnight here in MD. No need to travel until the afternoon, so the impact should be minimal. Good luck to those who are still recovering from the NE storm.

Still w/o power, going on 11 days and we're having a heck of a snow storm at the moment.

Seeing it's 10 pm, and no one will probably see this, I'll post on the new chit chat thread tomorrow.

Winter has arrived here in Cleveland with bitter cold temperatures and wind chills. Then there is a football team that is never hot - The Browns - sigh...

What's happened to the defense? The last 3 games have been horrible! Playing like this, they don't deserve to be in the playoffs. They would probably get bounced out in the first round.

Thanks for the memories of a better time, Monte. Enjoy your time coaching the Vols with your son.
