Reliability; Garmin v TomTom etc.....

Not counting the recent problems from updates I was wondering about reliability of Garmin products. I have only owned Garmins but my 350 had to go back twice for power switch problems and now my 750 has locked up (I did not update to 4.0 so not related) and after trying many options with CSR I have to send it back. I have noticed that sending units back seems to be a recurring theme on many threads even before the update nightmare. We all know Garmin CS is excellent and they do back their products, but do they need that service more than other brands. I would like to hear from some TomTom etc.... owners as to if they have had reliability issues.
BTW I think that differences in performance and features have been fully discussed on other threads my concern is only with reliability.

There are several things to take into account:
1. There seems to be more Garmin GPS units sold than any other brand.
2. You have heard from the ones who didn't have good luck with Garmin. What would the ratio be if you also heard from all of the Garmin users that didn't have any trouble with their GPS (including me).
3. As far as customer service goes, Garmin has been hard to beat.
I'm not saying TomTom isn't the way to go. Many on this forum have TT and love them. I'm saying don't rule out Garmin because of a few bad units that were returned. There are many, many more that weren't.

complaint ratio

While researching my purchase I read many reviews, very few of the good, mostly the poor reviews. I would add the complaint ratio of 3, 2, 1 ratings to the total of ratings available. Garmin always had greatest quantity of ratings and lowest complaint ratio at about 10%. All other brands had complaint ratio at about 20%.

i sent back my c 330 4 times . the reason i like the garmin is they are so user friendly . but i have had alot of problems also . the tom tom my dad has never had a problem but is not user friendly .

I have the nuvi 650. No problems so far. must have got a good unit?
