Nuvi 200 on the way

It was a gift so I can return it for credit. Might have to step up to a better model with Blue tooth and actual street talking but I am not sure yet.

I got a nuvi 200 a couple of weeks ago as a gift for signing up for a new credit card. It's a nice little complement to the Garmin GPSMap 60CSx I bought for hiking trails. The nuvi is designed for car/street navigating and much easier to use for that with the touch screen (compared to my Map60). I haven't used the nuvi enough yet to navigate but I've been keeping it handy in local driving to see how it does. I heard it 'talking' but I think it was just something simple like 'turn right ahead' without the street name, etc. I like it so far, though!

I have the same model,

I have the same model, received as a gift too. It's nice to have when I travel, since I'm terrible with direction.

On my last US trip, to Seattle, I was able to find hotels and restaurants easily, even on foot.

A lot of people say the street name text to speech is terrible, and confusing. I don't know though.

I'm still waiting one mine. I'm getting it free for signing up for the credit card as well. I made a post about it in the forums but didn't get even one reply. Guess folks weren't interested in a free GPS. surprised

Could be that every time you sign up for a new credit card your credit rating (score #) goes down.

Or it could be that is was just a measly nuvi200

I think it took at least six weeks after I got the Discover Miles card before the free nuvi showed up at my house. I always wonder if the freebies are even coming because those offers always state "Limited time only" and "while supplies last" but you never know if you're too late.

I think my credit score is safe since I pay on time. Might be it even goes up the more cards you have since it is pretty good and i have all kinds of very old, inactive cards still coming in the mail.

Anyway, when i saw the offer for a free gps i figured the model they advertised was probably on clearance or discontinued by Garmin and that's why the credit company was giving them away. Looks like the nuvi 200 is still going strong, though, as a starter buy for a lot of people.

not so fast

That is not how it works, regardless if you pay on time or not the credit rating goes down even if you never use the card, the way they look at it is the expending potential you have by having multiple cards in your wallet and not how much you owe or your payment history.

I'll take your word for it

'nough said about credit, I guess. didn't mean to divert this thread too far away from the nuvi 200 start.

take care!

it only matters.....

if you buy with credit. I don't personaly, but am fortunate in that respect. So my 200 will be, in fact, FREE.

My nuvi 200 was also a gift

My nuvi 200 was also a gift so I cant complain either, but it sure is a trusty little gadget. It definitely knows where its going in country I am not familiar with. It does not have all the bells and whistles that the bigger models have, but for what it is it sure is nice.

cash v. credit

I just don't like to carry a lot of cash when I go shopping. A couple pieces of plastic and an ID is simpler to me. Pay the bill at the end of the month and forget it. My dad's the opposite. Oh well.

It will recover

The score might dip depending on how many cards and the total open credit limit. However, over time any potential point loss will be recovered with on time payment history.

Credit score and free GPS

I have an excellent credit rating. I always pay on time and don't maintain a plethora of current cards. I checked my credit score not long ago and I was quite satisfied.

As for your comment "Or it could be that is was just a measly nuvi200" -- The nüvi 200 will be a 3rd GPS unit. I have my nüvi 760 for work and vacations, my 76CSx for geocaching (although I sometimes use the 760 for that as well), and the freebie nüvi 200 is for my wife who doesn't care about the bells and whistles.

A lot of folks have gotten the free units. Some keep them and some return them for a credit from Amazon. I setup a separate email account for the offer in case I received a ton of spam. I received exactly zero pieces of spam in that account.

If folks don't want to take advantage of the offer it doesn't bother me. I was merely surprised that nobody replied to the topic at all.

Got it today

I got this email:

Your Discover Card has been activated and your Garmin Nuvi 200 was shipped on 08/20/2008. Your package will be shipped via USPS under the company name Credit Offers Network.

That says it was shipped two days ago. My wife was home for lunch today and says it arrived while she was there. Sweet!

Took a while but finally . . .

Glad to hear Discover is still honoring the deal. I never got any note from them that mine was on the way but I did get it and I'm enjoying this freebie greatly! Have fun.

First GPS and am impressed

a Miles DiscoverCard for a Nuvi 200....I jumped on the deal on the thought that if it showed up I was ahead and if it didn't I could cancel the card. Impressive for $0. Even more useful for my daughter who is geographically and directionally challenged.

Any ideas on an upgrade if she appropriates it?

Third party offer

Actually, it's a third party offer. Discover will verify that it's a legitimate offer but they tell you it isn't from them. I'm sure they are just paying the other folks for credit card referrals and the referring company is providing the GPS as an incentive. They must pay them pretty well for referrals!

Happy wife

I told my wife we could return the unit for credit toward a 750 but she wants to keep the 200. She's used my 760 so she knows the things it has that the 200 doesn't have but she says the 200 is just what she needs and doesn't want anything more than it offers.

It's good to have a happy wife. wink

Well it went back to Amazon

Well it went back to Amazon today. Not sure what model I am going to get yet, but I am pretty sure it will have blue tooth.

It also looks like Garmin is in the middle of a line change. They have a ton of models that are discontinued and their current line does not seem very feature rich.

Well being impatient and needing a new toy I will grab something soon.

Can you look and tell us what version of software/firmware it has and how strange it doesn't already have 2009 maps. I'm looking forward to getting mine in about 3 to 4 weeks.

By the way, was it six weeks after you applied online, or six weeks after you received the card and used it?
