"please drive the highlighted route" to "Here we go, drive carefully"

I have to say, I like the names you chose. I thought I was the only one who named my Garmin. I named her Shirley..."Shurly we'll get there". laugh out loud
My mother later named hers Manny..."Many miles till we get there".

A lot of fun!

This one is a lot of fun! It took my son a while to notice some things had changed...

Keep good backups, and edit copies of the files on your local hard disk, as others have suggested. I use one of the British English voices, and that file is 13.9mb! Takes a while to move at USB 1.1 speeds.

Just got a 750, coming from

Just got a 750, coming from a 350, just found out there is no way to turn off the tone beep on the 750 like you can on the 350. That beep really gets to me. I called garmin and he said he would pass it on, So if it bugs anyone else please call them and let then know and maybe they will add it back. He said that the 600's still have it. I posted here because since there is a way to change what the unit say's, has anybody been able to change that beep sound? say like replacing with a mute sound so it does not beep.

Can't find the voices in my head.

Probably like the fat kid in school again, but I can't find the voice files... Let me guess I'm too last century with a Street Pilot c340???

crying That's OK the cool kids never let me play games with them either.... sniff, sniff

Seriously I assume the 340 is too old or am I just too technologically challenged to figure it out?

The problem you have on the SP 3xx series is that those units do not present themselves to the computer as a USB Mass Storage Device so you can't access any files on the unit with your computer.

New Version 2.50 Available

TurboCCC has released Ver 2.50

Tampa, FL - Garmin nüvi 660 (Software Ver 4.90), 2021.20 CN NA NT maps | Magellan Meridian Gold

New release v2.50

smile Gary, you are too fast... LOL!

Added Import/Export from/to text files. This can be used to share what you have done with friends. Doing an export/import to an original VPM can also be used to clean up some of the buffer if you made a lot of edits.

Use link from previous posts.

NOTE: if you want to share your phrases in the forum, please do not post the entire file. Partial file with only the relevant strings are ok. You just need to keep the first 3 lines. I use them to make sure nobody will import from a wrong voice file. Here's an example below.
---------------------------------
'DO NOT ALTER THE NEXT 2 LINES.
Voice Name: Jill
VPM Type: Nuvi 7x0/3x0 TTS
Voice Rate: 45
Voice Volume: 65
Screen Name: American English-Jill (TTS)

27-You are driving in the wrong direction. Make a u-turn ASAP.
68-We are lost, again!
70-Lost satellite reception. GPS are for outside usage!
---------------------------------

Have fun. Careful if you tamper with the text files manually. Use Notepad or Wordpad to avoir screwing up with the funny characters. Otherwise, remove the problematic lines manually.

GREAT WORK!!

You are doing some great work.. Folks, go to his site.. He has more programs to use.. I think tuurboccc has a future in GPS systems.. Keep up the great work!!

nuvi 350 voice file seems incompatible

Has anyone used this program for a nuvi 350. I get nothing but 2 lines of special characters for the file. I sent a file to GadgetGuy2008 but haven't heard there is a problem with the file.

Let me see it

Mike107 wrote:

Send the link to the file to me. I will check.

Renaming the Voice File

I had the same experience as GadgetGuy2008. I ended up with two voice files of the same name. I finally just overwrote the orignal file (after saving a backup on my computer) to avoid confusion. I may try changing it with a hex editor so I can rename it, but it's probably simpler to just swap it for the unmodified file if I want to change it back.

You cannot select the new one!

Although both voice files can be seen, you cannot really select the one you changed. You would know if you changed the voice screen name using the utility.

When you select it, it displays the original name instead of the new name and the phrases you changed are not spoken.

The only way for now is to overwrite the original voice file name with yours and keep the same file name as the original.

Note: changing the scrren voice name let's you know if the selected voice file is the original or yours. If find it useful to chnage it from the original.

Here is the nuvi 350 voice file that appears incompatible

Apparently you didn't get the msg I sent. The link to the vpm file is http://rapidshare.com/files/136326932/English_Australian_Kar.... I have tried other voice files with the same result.

Other Phrases?

Thank you Turbo! I love this editor!

But I still don't have everything I want. When I use Australian English-Karen (TTS) she reads WA as "Western Australia" is there a way to change that to "Washington"? It's not one of the pre-assigned phrases.

Is there another file that controls regional abbreviations?

Thanks

Got it!

Ok, mike. Got your file. It is definitively different from the usual. I will have a look and get back to you. It may take a couple days because I am taking some vacations...

There ya go: 350 support with v2.51!

Hi Mike,

I added the 350 support. I thought it was already there because some reported the tool working with a 360. Maybe you have a newer/different voice file.

Please, download the new tool and just open a couple of your VPM files (french, british, american, espanol) and check if you see valid text. If not, please report the files to me so I can have a better overview of these file types. Thanks.

Changes

I'm going to try out these changes:

26-I said turn around
27-You are going the wrong way, turn around you fool
34-stupid roundabout
70-I can't find any satellites, GPS is for use outdoors you dork
71-Hang on while I try to find some satellites

Modify TTS voice files

Thank you. I made the voice changes to my Nuvi 350. The editor is great. My wife was really surprised when Jill started to talk.

Also I used a standard Hex editor and changed the setup screen display name of my modified file. Search for "(TTS)" (it's in the display name) then make the change. My 350 is now displaying the original Jill name and the modified Jill name. I can switch back to the original Jill if my wife gets mad at me.
-Don-

I did!

Worked on my 350/360 the same.

nuvi vpm files

Turbocc:
That was a quick fix. Thanks. I thought you said you were going on vacation for a few days. I tried several other files and unfortunately there seems to be several different formats. I don't understand why Garmin would do it that way. Australian seems to work fine which is what I use mostly. Jill show 1-2 characters per line. Daniel, the same. Javier gives an error "6" overflow and Pauline and Julie are the same. Canadian_ says it is not a valid text to speech files. I have sent several of these to you at: http://rapidshare.com/files/137029336/English_American_Jill.... http://rapidshare.com/files/137029337/English_British_Daniel... http://rapidshare.com/files/137029340/Espanol_Americas_Javie... http://rapidshare.com/files/137029341/Francais_Canadian_.vpm...

Thanks again for the great program and the updates.

680

Changed one of my VPM files last night on my 680. Worked great!

another 680 success

I modified Karen.

I did notice that although I did not open them, the smaller, unnamed English and British files had a change in their timestamp when I saved my modified Karen. Anyone else see this? I moved all three changed files over to the nuvi and everything worked, so no big deal, just wondering.

Fun Stuff!

I freaked out the rest of the family by changing "recalculating" to "Why did you buy me if you aren't going to follow my directions!" and "Please drive to the highlighted route" to "Ready, get set, and go!"

Always backup your originals just in case and maybe also modify them in different directories on your PC. I've only modified one voice file so I haven't seen this before.

Changed phrases

I've cracked my family up by changing "recalculating" to "Alright punk, make my day, go your own way" a la Clint the Squint and added another invective by changing "lost satellite reception" to "Hey bonehead, your GPS doesn't work in tunnel or garage."

Here's what I did:
Copied all the voice files from Nuvi to PC in a directory named "voices". Created a subdirectory named "backup", and again copied all the files there. I then began to use the program directing it to the files in the "voices" directory. After I had finished modifying the Karen/Australian file, I noticed that two of the other files had changed. These were the two smaller files, the English and British files that were not associated with a named voice.

.sum files are checksums

Don't worry if .sum files are changing. They are checksum files for your new files.

As for the American_english_.vpm, these files without a voice name are non-TTS voice. They do not work with my program.

I *don't* change them either. Check what you have done.

BTW, you made funny changes to your voice files, guys. LOL!

Finally

Since I bought my first Garmin 3 years ago I thought something like this would be great. I'm glad there are people more suited to making this a reality than I could ever be. What a gift to the community. Thanks turboccc!

Just where do you think you are going?

TURBOCCC ,

Thanks for the program. I made a few changes to English Jill.

One i had to change was the "OFF ROUTE" it sounded like something from "LOST IN SPACE": 'Warning Will Rogers, Warning'.

Si I changed ti to "Just where do you think you are going?"

And a few others.

Thanks again for you work in building the software.

I *am* on vacations... LOL!

Mike107,

I am on vacations. I just managed to put my hand on a terminal to see how things were going. I will look into your files as soon as I am back. You can check for an update either Saturday night or Sunday.

Cheers all!

TurboCCC

Mike, you have old audio files...

Hi Mike,

I just looked at your voice files and noticed Jill was at rev 1.50. Mine is at rev 1.90. Your audio files may be outdated. You should use the web updater (if available for your unit) and try to update them.

Note that the web updater will only show the voice update if you have the latest firmware version installed on your unit.

Please have a look at that while I look deeper into your files.

This program is AWESOME!!

SO much fun to work this. Even my son was suggesting different phrases. (But he told me 'no cussing, Mom'....).

I have a 760Nuvi & it works GREAT! Thanks!

Voice Files

TurboCCC,
I updated all the voice files and at least the British, French, Spanish and Australian seem to work OK except those that don't have a name that is says are not TTS. I figured I was doing something wrong since no one else was having problems but I didn't think about updating voices. Sorry if I caused you extra effort.
I changed the Australian recalculate to "Sorry mate, I'll try to do better". That seems more positive and cooperative!

TTS voice file

I have a nuvi 660 and when I use the application (download link in this forum) to edit the voice file I only see a column of numbers 1 - 94 and single letters associated with the column of numbers. There are no "words" listed, just single letters.

Is the 660 not compatible with the TTSVoiceEditer_v251? Or am I doing something wrong.

This is what I did.

1. Copied the voice file from the nuvi to my PC.

2. Started TTSVoiceEditer and opened the copied file.

I don't know how to give you a screen shot but this is where I get the column of numbers and single letters (no "words").

I can change the single letters but I don't see the point.

Can someone help me??

Thanks,

The first 159 of them are words.

That's strange....I just looked at the file on the Nuvi again and opened it. Only has 94 lines and either single or double letters or symbols...no words.

The file name that appears on the TTSVoiceEditor is listed below.

GadgetGuy2008 wrote:

I don't know. My unit is about two years old and I have used the webupdater to load the the latest version from Garmin. Software Version 4.50. GPS SW Version: 2.90

I don't know how to check the version of the voice file, if that is different.
