Garmin Voice options

You're going to have to give us more specifics. What exactly are you looking for? Garmin voices? Custom voices? Redlight alert voices?

garmin voices

comes with the only stuff that works pre-installed. If you're looking for different versions of English files, what you got is all there is.

Mexican Jack doesn't speak English, switch to British Daniel, all will be fine.

If you attach your unit to your computer and run WebUpdater, it will prompt you to load any available voices that are not already installed on your GPSr as well as those for which there are updates.

Let me know if you find anything. I would like the change the voice on the Nuvi

and download the updater, this will allow you to link to grmin to download different voice features.

Come pre-loaded with all available voices that are compatible with them; and they sometimes are updated via Web Updater. If you're looking for other voice personae, there are none available beyond what you can download via Web Updater or other Garmin sites.

There is a way, IF you have a lot of extra time on your hands, IF you don't get flustrated easily, and IF you're content using the 'English_American_.vpm' (No Jack or Jill ... haven't worked on that one yet). You can split it, replace the .wav files with your own recordings, and join them back into a new 'English_American_.vpm'. I added a little humor to a few wav files; and when I get tired of Jack and Jill, I'll switch over to 'English American' to get a little variety.

Do you put the mp3 file in the mp3 folder or include it with the poi.cvs and .bmp files?

You place the .mp3 files in the same folder which contains your poi files (having the exact name as your poi except for the extension)

And I hope that your extentions really aren't .cvs...lol. Just joking and giving a hard time.

You can use a terrible computer synthesized sounding voice from a couple of web sites..you type something and it creates a wav or mp3 file for you.

However, why not record your own voice, or someone else's voice. Edit part of a CD or search for sound bytes, sound bites or sound boards for Homer Simpson or Mr T or king kong. Then convert the wav to mp3. There are plenty of free wav to mp3 or cd to mp3 converters. Just do a search.

if your "redlight" file is named redlight.csv then name the mp3 redlight.mp3 and put them in the same folder.

there are lots of web sites that you can download voices

just search yahoo or other using .vpm garmin files

you will find for 350 are lots of voices
i even found Mandarin-chinese which i was looking for it

but the only downside is that i was looking TTS
cant find Mandarin-chinese TTS yet

also i found A small voice program that you can split the VPM voice files and it will convert it to WAV files
but it only works on Non-TTS vpm files

if anyone had tried to join a Non-TTS voice vpm file to a TTS voice vpm file?

in other words, i am thinking to have a Mandarin-chinese voice file where it will said in chinese but the roads would be in english

I've experimented with a TTS file and found it can be modified if the new command contains the same number of characters as the command you're replacing.

This link (also posted at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/5821) applies to non-TTS files, not TTS files. Non-TTS voice files are 100+ WAV files and can be modified this way (including volume increase). TTS files are modified with a Hex Editor ... completely different animal!

Only units that have MP3 player can have custom alerts.

Hi in POI-factory!
I have a Nokia 6110 Navigator Mobil phone with onboard GPS. The phone has a very good function - i have installed Garmin Mobil XT - latest version - and installed Norway Topo Maps, Blue Chart Atlantic, City Navigator NT and special chart for Greece. Very good function.
I have allso installet POI for scandinavina speed-camera - and here is the problem. The phone only warn me with a beep, reed line and camera text. The phone has a very good MP3 player - and the question is: Is it possible to get the phone to speak the warning for speed-camera? I have a file ( POI ) with build in sound for Garmin GPS - and the file has a good function on this machines. What do i do on my Nokia 6110 Navigator. Thanks in advance. ( sorry about my spelling - i'm not so good in eng. - coming from Norway )

USE GARMIN web updater it will find all of the voices and installs them!1

Just checked pigtones FAQ page now, it now has content, for what its worth. I will give it some more time...once burnt, twice shy.

I just checked them out and can't get any of the samples to play. They just sit there saying "buffering" forever and lock up the computer until I close the page. Somethings not right......

Ok, I tried again and the samples worked this time - all but the last one anyway. I'd give Yoda a try (I'm using Darth Vader's Tie Fighter as my vehicle icon) but not for $13.

You can find many sites which sell celebrity voices, just do a google search for "Garmin celebrity voices"

Keep in mind that I have not seen a voice package yet that works with text to speech. This means the voices won't announce street names, they will just give standard instructions (e.g. - "turn left", "turn right", etc.)

You can try these if you have the units mentioned. Don't know how well they work though since their "sample" pages don't seem to be available?.

Garmin recently added a program that running in a browser & make it really easy to add the voices, they have 3 right now, Elfred is a riot. I have not downloaded the other voice, it is a Halloween voice. Also they added new vehicles & with the Garmin plug it it makes it really easy to use.

We tried the Elf voice and killed it after just a few minutes. Dr. Nightmare is the one we use. The voice is clear and the driving instructions are great. The comments are definitely related to Halloween, but we can over look that because of the clarity. It has caused us to rename our Garmin as well. It went from being Billy (after the blue-nosed reindeer) to Boris.
