Surprised

Wow, I am surprised they have an update now before the usual April release of the new map (2011 maps).

I'm glad I'm a member here because I rarely get emails from Garmin announcing releases even though I have subscribed to email map updates.

QUESTION TIME!

My update went smoothly. but one difference i have found . Before my map was
City Navigator North America NT 2010.30 Limited, Deluxe All Regions, Oct 09
Now It is
City Navigator North America NT 2010.40, US & Canada - Limited, Jan 10
What is the difference in these other than version 30 to 40? specifically what do they mean by "Deluxe All Regions" in previous map? and why new map doesnt show it?

Map name.

I noticed the same thing krishgarmin. I wonder if they have remmoved something that was in previous versions.

I think this change is to clarify what your mapset includes. "Deluxe, All Regions" is not very clear and does not specify that you get the US and Canada...and also maybe create the assumption that Mexico would be included as well.

Also, since Mexico is also in North America and is now included (but locked and inaccessible) in the downloaded mapset, for those mapsets that do (or will) include Mexico, they can now specify that it's in the mapset as well...for example "US, Canada & Mexico"

I just drove near my area and didnt found any significant change. May be changes would be in the area of construction. Sometimes I feel they might have removed Maxico from 2010.30 and instead added Canada in 2010.40

New lane assist instances.

Steve620 wrote:

I am finding new lane assist (multiple arrows) intersections in my area. In previous map versions these were not there. I am glad to know that Garmin/Navteq are actually increasing the coverage on this feature.

What i have found is now i can access to canada cities too. In previous version I couldnt do that.

This happened to me too w/ Win7, for some reason it 'minimizes' the 'do you want to continue' warning.... look down on the taskbar, you'll see a 'shield' symbol, click on that and continue. Some software does that on Win7, not sure why.

There is a seller on Amazon that has lifetime NuMaps for $79 + $5 (not quite $75, but still reasonable). I purchased from him a couple of days ago, and it arrived in 2 days (priority mail) - just in time for this update.

nuMaps Lifetime North America 2010.40 released

Lets see now. Had to d/l it 3 times. I ended up doing the manual d/l rather than the using their d/l manager. The install didn't work the first time either. After it told me that the update failed, i noticed that my unit for some reason wasn't showing up in My Computer. Cable was still connected. Unplugged it and started again. Something weird though. When it failed i checked my 765t just to see if it would even start. It started no problem. I went into maps to see if 2010.20 and the 3d map were still there. It wasn't, what i had was 2010.10 all by itself. Now i know for a fact i had .20 when i bought it, and this was my free update. What i don't know though is, if my unit would have actually worked. Anyway i hit the retry button and away it went. All done. No biggy, small glitch. smile

I had the same problem. Rebooted computer and everything went well.

good save for firewall and antivirus interactions

I had a smooth download experience at a steady 800 kB a second which may well have been limited by my cable connection.

However on launching the application I did have two or three glitches, all of which appear to have been interactions between the Garmin application and my firewall which is COMODO. The first "glitch" was a period of several minutes of apparently doing nothing. Using Process Explorer I noticed that during this period my firewall was very busy, so I assume it was doing some kind of check on the downloaded code which it has to treat as an application since it has an exe extension. Possibly some of the delays other people see at this step are also due to this sort of system interaction.

I also had to reassure my firewall at three or four separate points that I wish to allow the Garmin application the privilege do something, at least one of which occurred right in the middle of the half hour or so of map loading and caught me quite by surprise. Had I not been there to give authorization, I think that within a minute or two the thing would've crashed and burned.

Lastly, when the extraction phase of my first trial was nearly complete, I got a popup saying that 7-Zip had failed with an access denied error. My response to this one was to reboot, and to relaunch the downloaded file--which this time did not have any appreciable delay before displaying the initial Garmin information screens.

So overall it was successful and pretty smooth and fast, but at least on my system with its particular firewall and antivirus software, definitely not suitable for unattended operation.

The price we users have to pay because of some jerk sitting in there in their underwear, in their basement, is trying to mess sombody else's life up because they want others to feel some pain is pathetic!!!! I too had to "authorize" a few operations to keep the firewall happy.

I'm all for catching and severely punishing all writers of malicious code. Can't beleive that some are even proud to attend and participate in a "Hacker's convention".

Oh well, "Life goes on".

I have installed 2010.40 map update in my 32 bit Windows 7 desktop and my 64 bit Windows 7 laptop and both ran smooth no problems so shouldn't be a Windows 7 problem you're having.

I had the firewall, windows defender and Outlook 2007 running during both the 32 bit desktop & 64 bit laptop install and no problems.

Does any of you have seen some slight improvement in the new map? noticable area with improvement?

I live in the DFW,TX area close to the new Highway 161 that has not previously shown to be completed past my house going south on the .30 map. The highway was opened south about 3 or 4 months ago from I30 to I20 and that portion now shows up on the new .40 map.

Great, I've been through there several times and that's exactly why I've been waiting to upgrade my new Nuvi 265WT.

Installed 2010.40 Map On My Nuvi 660 - No Problem

I just finished downloading and installing the 2010.40 map update on my 660. It updated without a single problem.

For the record, this was the amount of free space on my 660 with each of the mapsets I've installed:

New, with 2008 maps - 540MB
After 2010.10 update - 428MB
After 2010.20 update - 394MB
After 2010.30 update - 379MB
After 2010.40 update - 365MB

I was able to install the update without having to delete any files.

1. Backed up all current files on the 660 to my PC.

2. The 2.06GB download took 15 min. over my 25Mb internet connection.

3. Using the free 7-Zip program, I extracted the files in the rar file to an empty work folder which took 7 min.

4. Finally, I ran the Setup.exe file from the \Windows sub-folder where I extracted the contents of the rar file. It took 1 hr, 55 min. to complete the install (install MapSource on the PC & upload the map file to the 660) due in most part to the slow USB 1.1 port of the 660.

5. (Optional) To free up some disk space on my PC (about 1.7GB), I went into Windows Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs and deleted the 2010.30 maps.

The 2010.40 map update installed version 6.15.9 of MapSource on my PC.

I also let it update the firmware version from 4.70 to 4.80 as discussed in this topic: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/26499

Firewall?

Downloaded twice - first time firefox blew up on some other website - restarted from where the download was but, the map install failed.
I figured possibly a corrupted file because of the firefox blowing chunks. Re-download but, I also disabled my firewall (new U-verse router with firewall enabled) for the install and everything went fine for my old C530. I some posts on installing the "rest" of the maps for the lower 48 into an SD card - anybody have a link for this???

Thanks

Crew

Some trouble downloading, but finally got it to work.

Took me three hours to down load and install (I normally have a fast computer). I disconnected my Nuvi from my computer, watch Nuvi boot up, only to see "can't unlock maps". My first thought? Aaaaaaaaaaaaahh! After several hours of trying to find the answer as to why my Nuvi said "can't unlock maps", I found it. Turns out that Garmin's download software downloaded my Unlock Code for 2010_30, which didn't work for my 2010_40 maps. The Unlock Code is contained in the gmapprom.unl file, which can be read by changing the extension to .txt, as in gmapprom.txt. In case anyone else runs into the same problem, I posted a thread at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/27407 .

I loaded them using MapInstall which comes with the download.
1. You need to know which part of the country you downloaded to you c530 with the original install (East, West, etc.).
2. Open Map Install and select where you want to install (I had my SD card in my computer because then I can use USB 2 as opposed to USB 1 through the c530.
3. Select as many areas as you want to load the SD card. The program will link them together as a single file on the SD Card. In my case, I had chosen West, so I just selected the Eastern states and PR. I suggest that you select slightly more of an area than the area that you didn't load on your GPSr as you don't want to miss anything.
4. I checked with Garmin, and the unit works fine if a locatation is duplicated.
3.

660 here, too, and I compared my update with your times.

I'm on 3Mb DSL, and W7-64 Ultimate, and it took 8 times longer, so that's making perfect sense!!

On write back, I'm using an Dual Quad Core Xeon with 24Gb of ram... and it took me 1 Hour 50 min. --- So it would appear that multi procs are not in the code, and the limiting factor is the USB 1.1.

Appreciate your always being the first to inform us. I am downloading now (seems site is busy, downloading at only 1.2mb/sec.
This time I will be careful in loading my maps. With the c530 I can only load 1 section of the country on the unit and the remaining on the card. Last time I must have missed some small areas when loading to the flash card as I didn't have a detailed map or directions in Edison, NJ. I don't know how to check to see if it is complete. Just take my chances.

Interesting. My download was for the lower 49 states. It also said something about loading regional maps, and other maps may be downloaded (on the card I believe). Is there away to verify what actually is downloaded? And how do you download to the card? Will my Zumo automatically check the card if a region is needed?
