Poll - How many still use paper maps?

I never use paper maps, it is either my garmin or some type of digital maps (ie. mapquest, google maps, etc). Just wondered if anyone uses paper maps.

If I counted it right,

Paper Maps (doesn't include print outs from eletronic sources)???

Yes - 34
-No - 31

As of the above date, I have quit keeping track. It looks like the answer is Yes (even if is just for backup). It was a close one though.

Both

I use the GPS, but have the paper map as backup

Paper Maps

I use paper maps when I go on long trips. I like to have a road atlas of the states I am traveling through.

Both

Prefer to use GPS but sometimes maps are necessary. Last year our rental cars' cigarette lighter quit working with an electrical problem so I was forced to use paper maps to find our way around.

i hate paper maps.. try to

i hate paper maps.. try to get as many gps maps as possible for whatever country i travel to.

I still use it if I need to

I still use it if I need to see the surrounding area of my destination. Then I use my GPS for the POI.

Generally no paper here

I know you stopped counting, but wanted to say that I generally don't use paper maps anymore. I do carry one with me for reference and the big picture, though. For planning purposes I normally just use Mapsource.

Yes

I am a bit of a collector/packrat, and I like to look at the old maps sometimes.

I haven't used paper maps in

I haven't used paper maps in some time now, but I still keep them in the car. I did buy an interesting book for the drive down and back on I-95 from NY to FL though. You don't really need a map for that...just head South or North, but it detailed interesting sites and info for a lot of the exits along the way!

I keep paper maps

Anytime I go on a road trip I get a set of maps from AAA. I like to have the backup in case my Nuvi craps out, and my wife enjoys looking at them while I drive.

Paper maps have there place

As a cross country truck driver it's great to be able to look at a large area on a map to plan route, fuel and rest, avoid as many scales as possible and maybe do a little sightseeing . Then I use my GPS to lock in an actual route.

AAA maps

I too get maps from AAA before I travel, especially to an area that I'm not familiar with. May not always get to use them though, and that makes me feel guilty about wasting the papers.

Didn't use paper maps, but do now.....

On a road trip through AZ a few months ago, the trusty Nuvi 750 routed me on a 40 mile length of dirt road - even with Unpaved Roads avoidance enabled. Didn't have a paper map, so I followed the Nuvi. I suppose I could have a done a Detour, but from now on I carry paper as a backup. These things are a great tool, but they are far from foolproof.

Paper maps

In the past I haven't used paper maps just relied on the GPS. This past weekend I had to drive across Highway 41 in NC and a bridge was under repair. Had to make a HUGE detour around the bridge. Sure wish I had a paper map to see what I routes I could have taken. Guess a paper map will be in my car in addition to my GPS from now on.

You don't know how to zoom out? It will give you the same "big picture" as a map with the added plus you can see exactly where you are.

If you can't figure out where you are on the paper map, they're useless.

Haven't used a road atlas

Haven't used a road atlas since my trip to Florida in '99.. It's been GPS ever since (starting with a Garmin unit, then my car equipped system.)

The GPS didn't re-route?

While I try to keep a paper map "just in case", are you saying that your GPS didn't reroute you efficiently, couldn't reroute you, or that you didn't have it on you at all? Just trying to understand how a map would have helped in that situation.

I'm curious because I will use my GPS to route me to work everyday even though I know the "best way" by now. That's because I work in Houston, TX, but live in Cleveland, OH. I don't really know the backstreets of Houston very well but figure that if the best way is out for any reason, the GPS should be able to get me to work based on what it thinks is the next best way.

I tossed out all my paper

I tossed out all my paper maps after I got my GPS. The last time I used paper map was like back in 2001 or possibly even earlier.

Occasionally, I would check out the entire route using google map b4 heading on trips.

No Maps

I no longer have a map in my car. I have been using GPS for 9 years and find it easier, and as reliable, then having an atlas in the car. I travel in 7 states for work and GPS wins in my book!

Maps

My GPS routed me about 20 to 30 miles out of the way. I found later the NC detour only added about 6 or 7 miles on the trip. Next time I would like to have a paper map see the reroute. Any way I got to see some interesting parts of NC that I would never been to see. So all wasn't lost.

I still order Triptiks from AAA. Just in case.

Google

Print them off google sometimes
just in case

I always carry a paper back

I always carry a paper back up no matter where I go. Sometimes you just can't trust electronic equipment.

Use of Paper Maps

I travel extensively and gave up using paper maps years ago when I first used NeverLost on a rental car. Now I use my Nuvi for all of my trips and cannot imagine how I ever got around by using paper maps.

Yes-on occasion

While I don't use paper maps as much as I used to I still use a Road Atlas to get the big picture.

Thomas Guides!

If any of you live in California, you know about Thomas Guides. THey ship cds of their maps with their printed maps, but the map books are indespensable. This may sound odd, but the fact that Thomas Bros is based in SoCal gives them the advantage of being local, and knowing the area they map very well. There's one disinct feature they have that i've never seen in another map, that turns out to be very usefull. The actual "incorporation" borders are marked very clearly. This comes into play in certain neiborhoods because in a number of areas, there are small pockets of "unicoirporated" areas. That is, there are small areas of a few blocks in Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Newport beach, and probably afew other cities that just out of the blue are not part of the surrounding city. Knowing where city laws apply, and dont apply, can be very important.

They both have their place...

I have been using GPS units since about 1998. I use both electronic and paper still.

Paper is good for a quick and big picture overview of your journey. Sometimes when you zoom out with the NUVI, the street names disappear and the paper maps still have them.

The GPS is good for real time guidance, accurate location speed and mileage info, and tracking where you went.

Internet maps are great for planning your trip and getting the street views of what you will need to find on that journey.

They all have their place and I dont feel that I will be giving up any of them anytime soon.

Thomas Guides

I haven't used the paper Thomas Guides in years. I got frustrated with all the page turning that is required to use them. But I do have a 2005 TG CD which is fantastic. Unlike Google maps, the textual information and the graphical map are in two separate layers, and it redraws and repositions all the text on the screen whenever you move the map, resize it, or zoom in or out. That way street names don't get cut off the edges of the map the way they do on Google maps. It's a more sophisticated digital map in that sense. But it lacks all the web-connected functionality of Google.

I still keep my free Auto Club maps in the car as a backup, but I don't use them. I sometimes refer to a quick fold-out map of the SoCal area. Just handy when you want the big picture quickly and don't want to zoom out so far on the GPS.

nuvi 660

i still use 'em

I use the Nuvi to navigate and it does a great job. I'd hate to get back from a trip though only to find I was a few blocks from a historic site I would have visited. Paper maps give me that high level view that I like.

Maps

I always have a paper map. As good as Garmin is it can still get you lost especially in sparsely settled areas where they don't pay as much attention to accuracy. Almost every trip in the mountains of NM I find I need a map.

Paper

I find paper maps indispensable. While my Nuvi can get me from point A to point B, it doesn't show the route it has chosen without some maneuvering. I can quickly see a large area quickly on a paper map and then verify the Nuvi route by touching the turn-by-turn instructions. The paper maps have often told me that the route chosen by the Nuvi may not be the easiest as it may attempt to route through a major city at rush hour when there are other alternatives. Also the Nuvi doesn't necessarily know about an unplanned side trip or a stop for fuel or food that would take you off the planned route.

Paper

Once in a while - for the "big picture"

Save the trees

I feel more green these days since I've gotten my Garmins.

Rarely

On occasion I will look at a paper map while in my easy chair before a trip. And still keep them in the truck as a backup but the gps has beet too handy and reliable while driving to break out a paper map.

Will nuvi 265W, Vista HCX, amateur radio

I alway sprint paper maps

I alway sprint paper maps from google but keep my GPS on. Some time a tweak in drive route as per paper map works out better. The GPS re routes after the turn any ways.

No maps or trip tics

I remember the old days of waiting in line at AAA to get a trip tic. Also had one of those large map books that seemed to take up most of the space in the front seat. Those days are gone.

Paper maps!

I still use paper maps and google. Paper maps contain more info the the GPS and you don't need to recharge them. Paper maps, while sometimes are a pain in the behind, are generlly more current and give you a better visual pictue of what you need to know.
