Poll - How many still use paper maps?

I never use paper maps, it is either my garmin or some type of digital maps (ie. mapquest, google maps, etc). Just wondered if anyone uses paper maps.

If I counted it right,

Paper Maps (doesn't include print outs from eletronic sources)???

Yes - 34
-No - 31

As of the above date, I have quit keeping track. It looks like the answer is Yes (even if is just for backup). It was a close one though.

Paper Maps

I still keep many in the car and look at them now and then for a macro-overview. They can still be useful for alternate routes in strange places when there is heavy traffic.

All my paper maps went to the trash.

Yes I still use paper maps on occassion.

I find that it is sometimes easier to see your overall route by using paper maps.

When in the planing stage of a trip...

There is nothing like a big paper map to get the overall picture.

Good to have one...

I recently learned the value of having a paper map (road atlas) with me when my GPS went out while on a trip.

Will always have one in the trunk just in case!

Although, I do not often use paper maps, I keep one handy. Sometimes the destination chosen by your GPS is not the most direct route.

nope threw all my paper ones

nope threw all my paper ones out. If Garmin doesn't get me there, then I don't need to be there.

Atlas

I still like to carry an atlas. It's just easier if you are in an area and want the big picture.

Trip in Door County

They're paving Hiway 42 up here. The wait gets lengthy sometimes. I knew there was a county road I could take to get out of the line but the Nuvi was the long way to remember which County road was which and a paper map helped right away. Sometimes they are helpful.

Trouble with Paper maps is

Trouble with Paper maps is that one has to purchase a map of the city one is visiting. The USA road map may help to get from city A to city B. But for driving within the city one is out of luck.

The GPS comes in handy. Also the rerouting feature is helpful in a new city. You will reach the destination, assuming that you entered the address properly. (For example N on the road or S on the road)

I quit using paper maps and rely on the GPS.

Paper?

What is this "paper" you speak of?

Always keep a Map in car

In case...
GPS lead to a wrong location (happened twice last year).
GPS out of battery and charger is left at home.
GPS is stolen.

GPS being stolen: Take steps

GPS being stolen: Take steps to avoid.. Use a friction mount.

When you are going on a long trip you will be carrying a charger.

GPS could take you to a wrong location if the map was wrong. But the probability of that happening is slim.

Maps don't need batteries...

...and no one will ever steal them out of your car. Beyond getting an overview of the route and modifying the nuvi's routing more to my liking, I seldom use them. But I still keep them in the car and will never get rid of them. I certainly don't envy someone who hasn't gotten turned on to GPS' and are 100% reliant on maps for navigation.

Paper Maps

I love paper maps. They work just great covering up my nuvi so no one can steal it! LOL Very easy to become dependent on a GPS.

Paper maps....

I only have them as backup just in case. Haven't used them for a long time now.

Yes on paper maps.

I order official road maps from all the states every year. I use them for planning my trips. Sometimes along the way, folks tell us about something I might be interesting. I pull out the map.

Gee, real social interaction, with humans! I bet it even leads to a conversation.

CAA

My wife and I have purged the large maps from our trips and we find that the AMA/CAA (Alberta Motor Association) Campbook & Tourbook (each current year) is small & convenient to still require a place on our trip. Just so much info in those small books.

I do wish to see more info included with custom POI's that could rival those books for western Canada.

Oh so much to learn... neutral

Too long to remember.

Not Quite

If I do an extend trip, I'll print out a summary map of the trip just in case. I have had GPS units fail on two different trips. Sad, but need a backup.

My other

My wife keeps a paper map... but she is being converted.

whole route

I like to see the whole route also. Sometimes I will look at the paper map but other times I will check Google maps before my trip.

Still Use Paper

I still use paper maps for the big picture and to quickly verify the route Jill maps out.

No Paper Maps

Neither my wife nor I use paper maps and we didn't before we owned a GPS. We always used printouts from MapQuest or MapQuest directions sent to our phone via text message.

Still have them and use them

My wife and I still have up to date paper maps for our trips but they are used pretty much for seeing the "big picture". My wife likes to follow along exactly where we are and where we are headed using the maps, something that's a bit more difficult with the GPS.

We'll also review our next days travel plans using the paper maps and Microsoft's Streets & Trips on a nightly bases.

Paper Maps

I still use them. Sometimes I will print out Mapquest Directions to use as a backup. Mapquest also has a road atlas that I use for the city and Metro maps. The road atlas also has a national park section with profiles of the top 12 parks

still there

I stopped ordering papers, but still have some old maps for use. I printed route info from Google map before trip as my backup.

Still Use Paper Maps Sometimes

Primarily I use my GPS, but still have paper maps handy. Whenever I travel to a State where I do not have a map, we stop at the stateline rest area and get maps. It is good to have a paper map to get an overview of everything and also in the event of a GPS failure.

I agree with Panama

Paper maps have a lot more information on them than just roads. A lot of times there are POI, scenic routes and all kinds of other information than what is obvious looking at a GPS screen. The GPS can get me from A to B, but it doesn't tell me there might be something interesting at C, D, and E along the route.
