Pictures for POI Packages & POI Files

I have started this topic because I would like to reach out to all the photographers out there looking for something to take pictures of.

What we need is pictures like on this page: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/10174 that Doc_Brown took for the site of Dairy Queen. Here is another that Doc sent in for Starbucks http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6021

Please do not use pictures that you find in google or other places. I would like pictures taken by members of the community.

So if you are planning on taking some pictures for me they need to be 200X400 pixels or less and please log in your places in this forum so that others are not duplicating your work. Make sure to check the POI Packages also to see if there is already a Picture featured.

I would like to have the company sign featured in the picture.

Send all submissions to photos@poi-factory.com
Thanks everyone,

Miss POI

Canadian stores

I just sent in a couple of pictures I snapped yesterday, for Canadian POI files.

cantire.jpg and ctire-gas.jpg for http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6153
tim_hortons.jpg for http://www.poi-factory.com/node/333
montreal_metro.jpg for http://www.poi-factory.com/node/10430
petro-can.jpg for http://www.poi-factory.com/node/8741

Just for the heck of it, I also included a French Canadian PFK (Poulet Frit Kentucky, aka KFC)
pfk.jpg for http://www.poi-factory.com/node/11066

And one that I could not find a poi for, but I tought I'd seen one for the Desjardins Coop banks. desjardins.jpg

There's a couple others I can get, I just have to get there, so this might not be my sole contribution.

Regards,

Simon

Simon, Thanks for those

Simon,
Thanks for those pictures and for letting me know what files to attach them too. Great Job!!!

As I was taking the pic of the Sun Trust Bank, the bank manager came out and asked me what I was doing and why I was taking a photo of the bank building. I had to explain and reassure her that I wasn't casing the place. I think she took down my license plate. grin

I wouldn't even have bothered to try and reassure her. I would have simply stated I was taking a photo and left it at that. It isn't any of her business anyway and you were within your legal rights to do so.

Then I would have taken a picture of her just to rile her up. wink

It is getting worse and worse in this country practicing amateur photography taking legal photos in legal locations. Photographers are getting harassed everywhere now. Take a picture of a bridge, Train station, mall, airport terminal, outside a bank, etc. and someone is bound to get all worked up about it, especially rent-a-cops.

PT

The problem is that if you "rile them up" then you need to be ready for all kinds of trouble including having to defend yourself in court. Being innocent doesn't help (much). You still have the choice between paying a fine for a trumped up charge and hiring an attorney and paying a lot of money and time to defend yourself. razz And that's if you are just written a ticket. If you get into it with a rent-a-cop or police officer, things can escalate rather quickly and you can end up not only injured but with additional FELONY charges that make the original ones insignificant. Remember that the police will always respond with overwhelming force. At that point they care less about what happens to you than to themselves.

I worked at a midwest oil refinery in a rather nasty part of town in a major city. When I came in to work one morning, a car was parked across the street and a guy had stepped out to shoot a couple of pictures. The (real) police descended on him like the wrath of God (at least 4 cars) and he lost his camera and was arrested. I found out that it was standard procedure and that all the rent-a-cops at the refinery thought it was illegal to take pictures.

I don't think it should be this way either but the reality is that if you are going to push it, you need to remain polite and avoid violating even the most petty law. Even then, I'd consult with other photographers of the subject for advice. Finally, have a good lawyer. You'll need him or her.

re: Security (chuckle)

Some weeks ago, a TV news crew was interviewing the manager of (?) Union Station, regarding complaints that visitors had been hassled about taking pix.
No sooner had he spoken the words "Absolutely Not True!", when along comes a rent-a-cop who stuck his paw across the camera lens... Apparently, he'd never met his boss.

Yeah, things are getting out of hand.

Lighthouse pictures

I am looking for a few lighthouse pictures to go with the lighthouse state files that I have generated. As stated by Miss POI, "I would like pictures taken by members of this community."

Original location pics please

I would like to feature pictures of the original location for some of our chain restaurants. We have had a suggestion from Mahoney to get a picture of the very first Sonic which is located in Stillwater, OK.

Do we have any Stillwater residents here that would be willing to submit a picture of this site for us so that we can have it linked to the POI Package page?

We could also use a team of members to research the origins of these chains to determine the locations of these original spots and turn it into a photo treasure hunt for the members in that community.

Who wants to play Miss POI's new game?

I would like to participate in your new game.

Me! Me! (at least for the research part)

OK, let's start with A&W. from the corporate about page http://www.awrestaurants.com/about/default.htm , the first location was in Lodi, CA in 1919. There is still a location in that town at 216 E Lodi Avenue Lodi, CA 95240, which you can even see in Google street view
http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=216+E+Lodi+Avenue+Lodi,+CA+9524...

But I'm not sure it is at the original location. Any one know how we could check that, public records or something?

Simon

Not Sure

I know the one in Modesto, CA is still there! Not sure about Lodi. Miss POI wants people IN these areas to take pictures.

Miss POI

Miss POI, you want us to just make a list like this?

McDonalds
400 N. Lee Street
Des Plaines, IL 60016

Hooters
2800 Gulf to Bay
Clearwater, Florida 33759

I think Gary might be persuaded to go get the picture of Hooters and lunch since he might be the closest down by Tampa.

Not local but.

PaulATL wrote:

I know, I know. That would have been better, but she also asked for help researching the sites, and that I can do from here in Montreal, over lunch. smile

The only one I could reasonably get is the St-Hubert on St-Hubert street. http://www.poi-factory.com/node/8208

For McDonalds, if you read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mcdonalds the one in Desmoines is not the first. The first was in San Bernardino, and there is a Museum now

http://www.route-66.com/mcdonalds/

which is also visible in Google StreetView

http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=1398+N.+%22E...

What I am going to do is

What I am going to do is feature the locations as a link at the bottom of the page like I have done here:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/11603

Here is the page where the picture is http://www.poi-factory.com/node/15766

I would like to have the contributor of the picture named along with the location information including the Longitude and Latitude coordinates. It may also be nice to have a link to news articles like the ones above.

Would it be better to have the history link on the picture page or on the POI Package front page?

Miss POI

Des Plaines, not Desmoines

tremblsi wrote:

I meant Des Plaines of course. (BTW, not seeing the whole thread when replying is a bit annoying when you hop on an ongoing conversation and want to comment on more than one entry. And I say only to keep Jon busy coding, so we can keep miss poi to ourselves)

Yeah, I've had that Hooters in the back of my mind for some time now. I just need to get there. I don't go that way very often, plus, I've been battling a lot of rainy days... like right now. Not the best conditions for taking photos. Miss POI just finished posting my last batch. I'm down to a pretty short list of what I can get.

Dear Gary,

I was/am thinking of the Arsenio Hall Show and his regular bit where he would talk about: "Things that make you say 'Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm'". (I think he may have said "Things that make you go 'Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm'" but I have never approved that use of the verb "go".)

I, of course, also inferred that the artist was dutifully inspired in his work.

Is It Something With The Name David?

Dear David,

Since I've never watched the Arsenio Hall Show, I'll have to take your reference at face value.

One of my best friends is named David and his sense of humor is very much like yours. You two could probably generate some very interesting email volleys.

When I get to Hooters, I'll do my best to get dutifully inspired... strictly in support of Miss POI and the POI Factory website, of course. Its a tough job, but somebody's got to do it.

Dear Comrade Gary,

You are most welcome although you are, of course, entirely deserving.

I am on holiday in western NYS, where it is also raining. I am trying to plan a sunny visit to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. I hope to be taking pictures with my old technology, my Nikon F3, which I have had since the early 1980s. One of my brothers calls it "The Tank".

May the sun shine on us all, tovarich.
