Orphaned POI Files

Orphaned POI Files

When a maintainer leaves our community or makes the decision to downsize their projects and gives us notice, we move the POI files to Orphaned Files

Any members interested in file maintaining are welcome to ‘adopt” any of these files.
Or, if you find a file in a search that hasn’t been updated for several years, please let me know. I will check on the status of the maintainer and if they are no longer interested in the file, I can switch it to you or move it to orphaned so we at least know the current status.

If you’re interested in maintaining a POI file but have never attempted it before, please contact me and I can put you in touch with a POI File Maintenance Mentor.
File Maintenance Mentors are members who have put together and maintained files who are willing to help get you started by sharing their experience in POI file development and maintenance.
I have a few people in mind as mentors, but if you are a file maintainer and are interested in helping as a mentor, please comment below.

Thanks for contributing!

Is there a way we can see what orphaned files are available?

Orphaned Files

If you hover over Orphaned Files in the body of the OP you can click on the link.

I'll also provide a link here.

Wow, quite a list

I'll have to retrain myself, LOL. My POI's don't change much. They don't make any new caves.

Tattling on myself

After I’d been here a couple of months and started to recognize some of the member names and personalities I commented to Jonathan about how strange it was that this Mahoney guy is so meticulous about the majority of his files, but seems to neglect all his Lighthouse files.

PS, All Those Tourist POI file were dated for a reason, That way I did not have to update them but just put together a new one for each year, however, I found that a lot of the places that I was putting in them could go into my Offbeat, so I decided to just go with the offbeat one. I also have put together some poi's for users here when they asked for them. I don't mind to help and most of the POI that would be used are all done.

My offer stands to help anyone with a poi or if they are looking for something Special for the moment for there trip.

Some or the ones that others asked for are Save-A-Lot Food Stores, Canandaigua NY, Heartland Brewery and Lancaster PA.

PSS - Anyone want to take on Save-A-Lot.. PLEASE DO SO.. not updating that one!

Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill - very old file

This one should probably be listed as an orphan too as it hasn't been updated since Aug 2007:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/5416

I would love to see this file brought up to date, Rubio's are a favorite! I know there are a lot of new and changed locations over 12 years... I tried sending a note to theTraveler but got no response. I looked at the Rubio's web site and found they don't have a 'locations' page listing all of them, just a search function to find a few of the closest ones to you or an address/zip you enter, so maybe that is why it hasn't been updated in such a long time. I created and/or maintain a few smaller files that I can update manually by geocoding points one by one, but wouldn't know where to start to get a current full list of locations or work with hundreds of points, so maybe one of the expert maintainers would like to take it on?

Orphaned Files

go to aggdata.com for the entire list of all locations. You will also get the store number, store name, address, city, state, zip code, phone number, store hours, latitude, longitude, geo accuracy, country, country code and county information.

I wonder...

I wonder how many of the 100s (thousands?) of POI files now on the Factory are obsolete either because they are irreparably out of date, nobody cares about them anymore, or those places no longer exist. 1/3 perhaps? 1/2?

I think it's bound to get worse as more members use their phones instead of a dedicated GPS device and they no longer need, or want, POI files. I would think this site will fade away in the years to come.

GlobeTurtle, I'm willing to assume maintainer responsibility for this POI. I like the chain, and it's relatively small.

Do they still have 3 free Margarita and popcorn "hour"?
Breakfast was great.
Haven't been to one in several years. Was my favorite.

@Ken re Drury Inns

The last one I went to about a year ago had cut the included drinks (well-drink cocktails, beer, or wine) to two per guest (probably for the best! Guests can have unlimited soft drinks). It also includes a two-hour (I think) supper and longer-time breakfast buffet that is pretty good.

Bed quality is excellent and the Drurys I've been to are well-maintained.

Prices are arguably reasonable especially if you will be making use of the buffets and drinks. After a long day of travel, not needing to go out for dinner can be a nice perk, but you do have to arrive before ~6:30 - 7:00 PM to use the dinner buffet and drinks benefit.

The chain caters to more of a quiet business and couples base than families with kids. Despite that quiet angle, many of their hotels are pet friendly with a moderate fee, but it doesn't seem to cause the problems it can cause at LaQuintas (which since their buyout by Wyndham have become less pet-friendly--we'll have to see how that plays out).

Not familiar with this chain but will check it out if I have a chance.

What about not orphaned files?

I am curious about files that are not orphaned but have not been updated in years. For example, the Auto Zone and Advance Auto Parts poi files have not been updated in over 10 years. I use those files but did not realize they were that old until I did an update to my Garmin units recently. I have found a few more files that have not been updated in years.

Should we have a "not updated in X years" category for those older files?

Old files

Makes perfect sense to me. There are hundreds of unupdated files that should be either adopted or flagged as unupdated. Many (most?) of the unupdated files can probably be deleted but who among us except the OP should make that decision? On the other hand, many of those updated files are for long gone businesses that are not only long gone but long gone and forgotten. Not a simple issue once one thinks about it.

Outdated POI files.

I admit I am one of the guilty parties for not updating the one POI file I created (Unitarian Universalist Congregations). It hasn't been updated in 11 years, and probably should be removed. I lost interest in doing the work required to keep it updated because it was only ever downloaded 150 times in the 13 years since I created it and I would bet 125 of those instances were from me while I was working on it. Also, the website I used to get the original list changed the search mechanism making it difficult to get a complete list.

I suppose on the other hand that churches don't change that much so probably the majority of the entries are still valid. But I would understand if JM and Globe Turtle choose to remove the POI file as an obsolete file as I don't intend to work on it again and it would probably be difficult to find anyone willing to update it. My apologies to anyone who may have found value in this file for not keeping it up to date.

Unupdated Files

The only one of my POI files that I currently maintain is the North American Breweries file, The rest I haven't looked at in years.

Brueggers file for me

They changed their search engine and it is difficult to update.

Outdated

As mentioned by other members on this thread, this isn't an easy fix. Similar to Alandb's comments regarding the UCC file, Mahoney's Lighthouses files would likely fall under the same category, not something that changes often. There are also locations and businesses that are more regional, that Jonathan and I aren't familiar with, so we count on the file maintainers to decide on if updates are needed.

Going forward, as we find files that are a bit more obviously outdated, chains that have gone out of business, etc, remove those. As for members determining if the file they want to download is current, there are dates on all the file pages that show when the file was last updated and we encourage file maintainers to make notes in the change log so members can see what has been done before they update their file.

Cabela's is another example of a business that changed their "store locations" from easy to way more difficult. I am the titular owner of the Cabelas.csv and .gpx POIs but have no interest in maintaining them any further. Feel free to give to, oh, I don't know, Mahoney maybe? He doesn't have anything else to do. grin

Cabela's File

Since I don't have anything else to do (HaHa) and during my update of the Bass Pro Shops file, I noticed that 6 of your Cabela's locations had been changed to Bass Pro Shops. I was about to send these locations to you for deletion from your Cabela' s file. I will delay sending them to you for removal.
Since both of these stores share a website locator and if you are serious about having no interest in maintaining the Cabela's file, I will take over that function.

Please do

Orphaned CAVA Grill POI file, anyone?

The file titled "CAVA Mezze Grill"

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/44454

was just transferred to orphaned files when the original creator said he was no longer able to maintain it. One of these stores just opened near me and I like it a lot, enough to wish there was an up-to-date file so I could easily see if there is one nearby when I travel. Their website cava.com has a locator page which lists all of their locations on one page by state, so I don't think it would be too hard to maintain, but I'm unable to take on a new one at this time.

Anyone interested?
