Flying Through Space

I take the newly opened I-355 tollroad extension in the Chicago area. A beautiful 6 lane new highway, great shortcut. Of course, Garmin has not updated maps yet, so I love watching my little blue car take to the air and fly over farms and the Illinois river, very "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" like. Didn't know the little car had it in her, LOL.

Seriously, what has been everones experience as to the frequesncy of updates for what seems to be a major highway addition?

Road Additions

One to two years. I'm sure that this new extension has been reported to Garmin/Navteq, so hopefully it will be in the 2009 mapset update. Their updates on the progress of US 78 (future I-22) have been pretty good thus far, and several new roads in Georgia were added in the 2008 update.

Take your unit out of

Take your unit out of pedestrian/off road mode...

Then it will snap to the roads programmed into whatever map version you have.

An auto nav unit will never take you through a field and across a river if properly set up.

It will take you on some weird routes...

I like how it directs me to Avalon

That reminds me of one of my first experiments with my 660. I gave it a waypoint of Avalon, Catalina Island (roughly 26 miles off shore) from my home. It directed me to drive to the ferry in San Pedro. Then said to board the ferry. The 660 actually followed the channel out to sea, going thru the proper opening in the breakwater. It was not too accurate in the length of time. It calculated 30 minutes, actually takes roughly 75 minutes by boat, once you board...
