Find my car in a parking lot .... RGIHT

The 750 has this really cool feature, however I find it quite cumbersome to access. Going through those layers and resetting to "Offroad" and/or "Pedestrian" modes is awkward at best.

Couldn't a macro be hacked to do this in one swell foop, or is it possible that Garmin will incorporate such a macro & assign it to an on-screen icon in the near future?

Just a thought.

Probably not, since it only

Probably not, since it only takes less then 30 secs to do the changes.

I can see the merit of using "Offroad", when on foot (although you can't walk in a straight line all the time). I don't think selecting "Pedestrian" mode has much going for it though - it might stop you getting 'routed' onto the nearest Interstate! - but you could do that for yourself smile.

In other words, it stops you going on roads that Pedestrians aren't allowed on, but it still doesn't know that you can go the 'wrong' way down a one-way street!

That is what 'pedestrian'

That is what 'pedestrian' mode does, it routes you on a one way street the wrong way. At least that has been my experience. I haven't notice any other difference.

It can't have done!

These things just set 'avoidances' i.e avoid things marked in the map as "No Pedestrians", "No Trucks", "No emergency vehicles" (bit odd that last one!)

Pedestrian Mode

actually, that's the whole point to Pedestrian Mode. In cities, like NY, it will ignore traffic rules such as one way streets.

?

Where's that information from?

We have (as far as I'm aware), no detailed information from Garmin, or Navteq as to the internal workings of this function, but ... cgpsmapper is a 3rd party product that creates Garmin compatible maps.

In the manual (P26), where it describes how to set various attributes for a road - the avoidances are described thus:

no emergency vehicles allowed on the road
no delivery vehicles allowed on the road
no cars allowed on the road
no buses allowed on the road
no taxis allowed on the road
no pedestrians allowed on the road
no bicycles allowed on the road
no trucks allowed on the road

The implication being, that if you select (say) Pedestrian as your 'vehicle', it will stop you being routed onto an inappropriate road, but it won't go searching the map for footpaths and other shortcuts. In the (limited) testing I've done, that's exactly what happens.

I'm happy to be proved wrong - present your evidence !!

I am confused now...but here

I am confused now...but here is my experience...

When in Ped mode, it will take you on streets the wrong way and the shortest way. If you select auto mode, then it takes you a longer way, cause of the one way streets.

I am too!

In an effort to find some concrete evidence - I've so far just managed to prove myself wrong smile -- still working on it!

The last time I used this for real, it definitely wanted me to wander around a small traffic calming scheme - even though I could see the car dead ahead - I distinctly remember thinking how stupid it was.

Update:
Perhaps it does override the 'road direction flag' as well, in Pedestrian Mode. Maybe it was all the traffic islands that confused it? - ie it saw the division in the road and decided they didn't connect.

Pedestrian Mode

Phil ... you are always proving yourself to be a wealth of knowledge here at POI Factory, so you had me thinking that I must be wrong!

However, this Ped. Mode can be proven rather easily.
- set to Pedestrian Mode
- set loc. to a spot on a one way street you are familiar with (I used 37th St in NYC)
- have your GPSr direct you to a stop East of you, and a stop West of you.

Remember, this is a one way street, yet my Nuvi 360 states "Walk East ..." and "Walk West ..." to my destinations. Hence, proving that Ped. Mode ignores One Way traffic rules, and recognized that you are walking instead of driving

ok, ok :-)

Does your 360 actually say "Walk" rather than "Drive"?... my 310 doesn't.

I've just realised that the other point about seeking out footpaths etc is probably also wrong ... but the maps we have are all road maps anyway -- and in general don't seem to have (m)any footpaths marked. If there were any, presumably, they would be marked "cars disallowed", but there would be no such pedestrian restriction and it would find them.

Yes ... it says "Walk"

Yes .. it says "Walk"

Just remember to change back to "Car/Motorcycle" after utilizing the Pedestrian Mode ... you can get into some trouble when you get back into your car! Never getting onto highways, and, even worse, driving into oncoming, one-way traffic!!!

Walk vs Drive

That happened to me, I forgot to change it back and it kept trying to take me on one way streets the wrong way.

I don'tremember it saying "Walk", thought it said "Drive".
