Magellan 2200t POI Manager doesn't see the POI files

I just got this gps last week and decided to try and download some more restaurants because there aren't many (a lot of them in my area have closed) I downloaded two files into the proper place on my computer(My POIs) and made sure I saved them properly in excel. My computer does not show the downloaded files in the POI file. The folder is there along with all the other folders. It is empty even though when I look at it in My Computer the files are there. I am spending so much time trying to figure this out and it must be so simple. Can anyone help. Thanks.

CSV Format

Magellan's POI editing tool can import files that are in CSV format. It can't read files that are in Excel's regular format.

When you click on a file to download from this site, most computers give you the option to SAVE or OPEN the file.

Choose the SAVE option.

If you choose open, your computer will send the file into Excel; and you usually do not want to do this because Excel can mess up the format.

If you choose SAVE, your computer will keep the file in its original format.

JM

however, if you do choose

however, if you do choose open by accident, then just make sure that you save it as a csv file.

Still doesn't work

I downloaded them again and saved them to disc. Then I dragged them into the poi folder. When I open the roadmate poi manager the folder is there but it doesn't see the files in it. Also, the arrow is shaded out (not green). The files are csv except for the dunkin donuts one which is gpx. I am getting discouraged.

You have to import the CSV file into the Magellan POI editor and then save it as a .MGLN file. It is the .MGLN file that you need.

- Open your Magellan POI Editor
- Browse to your folder
- Select the file type as .ASC;.CSV:.TXT.
- Import the file
(Start at record 2 if you have a header row)
-Chose you labels at the top as appropriate
(NAME, DESC, LONG,LAT, LAT are the 5 possible)
- Save your file (As a .MGLN file)
- Import Copy yur file to your magellan with the Magellan Tools

Remember that in each file:
- NAME MUST be unique
- no more than 10 Categories per file
- no more than 1000 entries per category
- not more than 35 chars per name are kept
- not more than 35 chars per description are kept
- NAME, LAT, LONG required at a minimum
(Category is useful too)

Hope this helps

To add to the above reply:

After you have opened the .csv file as described above, accept the line 1 default, select comma for Separator, then click on NEXT. On the next screen, use the pulldown menu over each column to label the fields.

Based on the .csv files that I have downloaded from this site,
I label the first column longitude, second column as latitude and third as name. Any of the subsequent columns can be labeled as description, although they do not usually help at all. Click on FINISH and the data would load on the POI file editor. All of items will be under the "Default category".

Right click on "Default category" and select MODIFY.
Rename the category with whatever name you want and change the image to something that is appropriate. You can put a check mark on Activate alert if you wish. Then click OK.

You can modify any entry that you wish at this point.

When done, click on FILE then select SAVE AS.. it will default to the same filename with a MGLN. extension. Click on SAVE and you now have a POI file that you can transfer to your 2200T.

OK, I figured out what I am

OK, I figured out what I am supposed to do. I had to open a new file to see what was in the POI file on my computer and I selected the type of file. I hope it works just as it is. otherwise I will give up and just be happy the the GPS gets me to where I am going.

Thank YOU! for taking the time to Answer all this! I'm also a new user (based on price reduction sure there will be more!) I was struggling also to figure out how to download etc.. took me a bit to find this string - Thank gosh I did and will cut and paste these instructions for future use. Now to see if I can figure out how to Upload to my new toy smile

Again thank you for your patience and help

Well I found the POI here that I really wanted smile Goodwill stores- they are not in my new GPS even with all the 4 mil+ POI it says it has.

I have had no luck figuring out the trick.. any help would be apreciated. Also very long day-ended up in home contractor hell today-any one know a good tile guy in gilroy sad

I recently purchased my first GPS - Magellan 3200. I've downloaded new POIs and can't figure out how to add new images/icons to the files rather than using some of those already included in the editor. Is this possible with the Magellan? Thanks

Goodwill Names

You must have a unique name for each location or it will drop all the locations except one. So you will have tuse Excell to change the names of each store to i.e. Goodwill1, Goodwill2, Goodwill3 or use the Concatenate function in Excel to join the Name Goodwill with the street address column to again make them all unique. Another trick would be to name the Category Goodwill and use the street address for the NAME Column- It will work
Good luck

Magellan poi file editor import filter is not flexible enough.

I have been fooling with this.
I took one of the poi files I downloaded (the Kaiser Permanente Southern Califoria), it has Lat, long, multiple lines in the name field and the same multiple lines in the desc field.

I notice the POIs that are in my Magellan 2200T have multiple lines, so clearly that is supported, but I haven't yet gotten it to work with the Magellan POI editor.

I open a .csv file with the magellan poi editor and it just blinks and nothing is loaded. I did that a few times, no error message, nothing.

I resaved the .csv as .txt in excel.

It did open as txt but the import wizard is nowhere near smart enough to handle that.

I took out the multiple lines in the name field. Added a category field in column E, tried again.

The import wizard is just not flexible enough, the lines are wrapping and you just cannot fix it.

The thing is the multiple lines, that is confusing the import wizard, and it can't do it. Clearly the software we have and the software Magellan uses are not the same, they have something much better.

Does anyone have any comments?

Import the .CSV file

When you import the .CSV file

-Choose your labels at the top as appropriate
(NAME, DESC, LONG,LAT, LAT are the 5 possible)

They are a drop down option at the top of each field.
You should then be able to save it as a .MGLN file to upload to your GPS.

At least that is how it works on my 860T

Let me know if this worked...

As far as I can tell, at least in the Magellan 2200T you cannot load POI files from an SD card.

This seems odd, kind of an oversight on their part since when you do load POI files to that unit from the Magellan software it lists the POI files as "internal memory". That seems to say POI files might someetime be in some other memory, like an SD card. But the unit doesn't seem to be able to see the .mgln files on an SD card.

I hope they fix that so you can put your POI files on an SD card.

POI Files on SD Card

On the Crossover (2500NA) when you use the Magellan Software to transfer POII files from your computer to the GPS, on the GPS side at the top it lists Internal memory as the default. If you click on that pull down arrow, it should allow you to place it on the SD card instead. Doesn't seem to matter what brand of SD Card. I just used cheap generics from Wally World and it works fine. Make sure the SD Card is in the slot of the GPS before attempting.
Luck!

Magellan 3200 SD Card

I transfer the POI files from my PC to the SD card. Then insert the SD card into the 3200 and view the POIs from the "Enhanced" button. I think just about any brand SD card will work. I've not tried any card over 2G's yet. As far as the 3225, the SD card works the same way. However, that model has enough memory to alter the internal POI file to include the 6M file which is outlined in another forum.

I've used off brand 1GB and

I've used off brand 1GB and 2GB SD card on the 3225 but as stated before, if your POI is the standard 1.3 million, there is lots of storage space left, about 800 MB. I've updated mine to the 6 million POI and use a 2GB SD card for custom POI's.
