Magellan Map Update

I saw on the Maggellan website that they will post new map update in August. Since this will be my first map update, do they charge you for it or is free to download?

Charge

They normally provide it on a DVD and charge $99.

magellam map update

which model do you have & where was the update posted on the website??

Updates

I have the Roadmate 760, and I looked under "Software Updates" on the left side of the homepage www.magellangps.com According to that, the update for my model is due in July.

software update

I too have eagerly been anticipating this software update. For the longest time (many months) the Magellan website has been promising the update for the Roadmate 760 to be available in "early July," which naturally has come and passed. Today the Magellan website seems to be down. Question: Is it worth it to pay another $99 for an update for an outdated GPS unit, when you don't even know if the updates will benefit you, or should one just buy a more up-to-date GPS instead?

Still good

For me it is worth the $99 annually. The next GPS I would buy is still $900, and even though outdated and not as flashy, I still like my 760 and it works great.

update delayed

Magellan website now says Roadmate 760 update will be available in September, and come September, who knows, it may be pushed back even later. I like my 760 too, but I honestly think it makes more sense to pay for a new one, unless you intend to pay over $500, which I do not. Costco has the Maestro 4040 (I think) for something like $400 now, I played with it in the store, it's sweet.

Garmin Nuvi 680

I am holding out for the Garmin Nuvi 680 with MSN Direct traffic, weather, movies and Gas prices. I played with one for two weeks and loved it. I will either get that or hold on to my 760.

Late?

Hmmm. Apparently they meant late September.....

Map Updates - Last Week of September

I spoke to Magellan on Friday.
Tried to see if there was an update to v2.0 of the POI editor (I have v1.5 that came with my 800 and v2.0 that came with my 860T)
They were useless in helping me BUT while I had them on the phone I asked the question about the update/cost. I was told the updates should be available during the last week of September. As for cost, he said it SHOULD be as per the previous updates to other models.... around $99.
Only time will tell if the info was accurate.

Waiting

Thanks for the update!

So much for September 2007

I guess they must have meant September 2008.... or maybe 2009.

Their Website accuracy mirrors their non-existent technical support. Such a great product .... such POOR customer service/support.

This is a very frustrating company to deal with.

Magellan Map Updates

I just got off the phone with Magellan.
If you want to believe them, they told me the Map updates would be available on the website for the second week of October... then they said check to check on-line on October 15th.

Let's cross our fingers and maybe this will be the REAL date.....

--

Update their site

You would think they would at least update their website to say "October".

That would require an effort

Are you kidding? That may make them look like they cared about their customers. Hmmm interesting idea!!!!

maps

Magellan's customer svc ... promised me that the map update would be available the last day of Sept. 2 weeks later and I'm still waiting. I think I will just sell my 3000 on E-bay and buy a garmin. They seem to have better support and customer satisfaction, and I read that they update their maps on a regular basis.

Can't comment on Magellan's

Can't comment on Magellan's support, but Garmin's has been exceptional when I called.

map for 3000t

I talked to magellan's corporate office this morning and the lady told me that the 3000t will NOT get an update now. That just makes my blood boil. Seems I've been waiting for nothing. What a joke, they get you for your money, then leave you hanging. Hopefully future GPS purchasers read this and DONT buy magellan

Crossover 2500T

Had unit couple of weeks and like it. Only one instance to email cust support and got reply that solved prob is less than 24hr on firware update to 2.14 which is sub improvement over 1.62.xx.xx that came on unit. Also much quicker calc amd recalc routes now and one auto reset. Info on update firmware is not on their site. had to ignore update inst and input "firmware code" given by Mag rather than one on unit. Documentation is awful, but finding my way around it. Maps- some of them- seem up todate. Routing alog a little clunky, but again finding my way around it. POI inluded just OK but don't know how you would get everything in anyways. Better to use the POIs from this and other sites to build your own. 2900 Tim Hortons works great. Having fun with new toy, much to my wife's disgust

Magellan Finally released the Map upgrade for 3000 series

Well Magellan after only 6 months finally upgraded the maps for the 3000 series (my 3050t) Gee and only $80 bucks!
I was told when I bought and registered this POS that I would get the update free in March when I bought it and they stated then in April the maps would be upgraded. Well I heard that story every month since. So now I have my complaint into Magellan which I am positive will get a nice canned bs response of oh sorry, get your wallet out! I should have bought something else. Their CS is nonexistent and worse yet based in India by who I have continually spoken with to this point.

You should have had a

You should have had a V8!!!!!

Maggie 3000T Update w/discount

Majello has a $20usd disco coupon available on their site for the long awaited map update. Valid until Dec 1 (I thing).

No download - dvd delivery only.

rip off

When The roadmate 760 came out in June 2005, I paid top dollar for this unit with the understanding that it was able to be updated to newer maps later. They claimed every 18 months but it has now been 28 months and no update to be seen yet. The map was older when it came out so now it is terribly out dated. We had a major Highway addition a year and a half ago which makes almost every trip planned wrong. I have to wait for 50 miles before I input my destination so it does not keep telling me to turn around. I would never had paid $1,000 for a gps device knowing the maps would not be updated in a timely manner.
They keep saying an update is coming on their site but they keep moving the date, at least 3 or 4 times now.

I would never buy or recommend a Magellan product again since I expect to be treated better than this since I bought their top of the line model at the time.

I almost did that....

I was going to buy the Mag, same model. Then someone told me the support with Garmin is so much better, I didn't consider any others.

Magellan Map Updates

They are now starting to show the map updates as available to order (on DVD). I ordered my update for the RM860T on Thursday evening (before midnight)

As of now, it still shows as
"This order is currently being processed."

It has been this way for a while now. Checked with my credit card company, they accepted an authorization (twice actually) but no actual charge yet. Going to have to keep an eye on my credit card for double billing.

Hopefully they will process this faster than they mad the update available.

I thought I saw Dec 31, 2007 for the coupon expiry date.... Not 100% sure.

--
Garmin Nüvi 855 & 760, iPhone, Magellan RM860T

I ordered the update on

I ordered the update on thursday as well. I inputted the $20 discount number and it took off the $20 until I hit order continuation. Well instead of it showing what the total was it showed I ordered it and it removed the $20 discount. My order still shows pending in their system. I have tried to cancel since then by phone with their overseas(india) csrs. ...
The only thing they ever say is we can't get a hold of a supervisor now you call back two hours and it handled then, goodbye.
I emailed Nelson Chan the CEO and The rep for their office and the head of customer servive refellini or something. No reply yet. The computer did state they at least opened my e-mail. My bank still shows a pending charge. These guys are idiots.
I am going to wait till the end of the week and if I don't have a reply I am putting a hold on my credit card for that charge and filing with the BBB. At this point I want my money back from this unit so I can go buy a Garmin. Magellan is worthless!

RM860T Mao Update.... UPDATE

I just checked and mine is still pending as well.

Map Update $59.99
Subtotal $59.99
Shipping $25.00
Tax $ 5.10
Total $90.09

I am glad I did not fork over the extra $20 for faster shipping. Slow minus slow is still slow.

If it takes too long, I too will have my card cancel the request and file a dispute with the BBB. For some STRANGE reason, I kind of suspect that BBB may have already heard about them. If not, I sure they soon will.

Magellan Map Update RM860T

Just got off the phone with Magellan.

The website still shows the order as "Pending"
The rep told me it had been shipped and gave me the tracking number. The update is now on a truck here in town "Out for Delivery". Since I am not home, UI guess I will have to go pick it up tomorrow or Friday. Wonder what the next glitch will be.......

--
Garmin Nüvi 855 & 760, iPhone, Magellan RM860T

And the Saga continues....

Got the update via FedEx las night.

I tried to run the update, but it rejected my authorization code. After spending over an hour on the phone and talking to two techs, I was told they would have to escalate my problem to the next level. I am to get a call back within 24 hours.... I wonder who choses which 24!!!!!

I pointed out that the Magellan has a 13 digit serial number in the back (Starts with 0) and it shows this "0" in the info screen, but the update software seems to strip this "0" and makes it a 12 digit number.

One of the techs THINKS I am on the right track.... but can't help me.

It has now been 12 hours.... 12 to go....

HA!... I'll probably be lucky to be updated by January, they already have my money. They can't take my patience, they already took that a long time ago.

ARGH... what's next...... Stay tuned!

Update on the MAp Update Saga

Well... the 24 hours have come and gone.

I tried to call the 800 number and it said they were closed (though it was within their work hours)

I called the direct number (Long distance). Well that worked and I asked for someone to call me back. They said I would get a call by the end of their shift. Must be a hell of a long shift a I am still waiting.

I put in a trouble ticket on their system and got a reply.... they have escalated my problem and will be calling me back..... Could someone tell me if escalated means "threw out"?

To say I am frustrated is an understatement.

On another note. The update brings the Maps to Q3-2006... Sure sounds OLD. I would have expected it would be something in 2007.... or am I just expecting too much.

How old are the Garmin maps by then time they are updated on the units?

--
Garmin Nüvi 855 & 760, iPhone, Magellan RM860T

I'm wondering why Garmin

I'm wondering why Garmin customers are always so pissy about having to pay $70 per update when other companies -MAGELLAN are chargin $30 more. answers anyone? do people think that the survey companies do not need to be paid?

Updates

Actually my Magellan update was $59.00 ($90 with shipping and taxes)

I don't mind paying BUT I would like it to work. To date, I am out the money and they still have not even tried to contact me to fix the problem (System will not accept my activation code)

I also question the Age of the update (Q3-2006 sure sounds old for a current update).

If Garmin actually supply working updates with minimal pain, my *60T may be up for sale REALLY SOON though I sure hate to saddle this problem onto another pour soul.

Well I have never heard from

Well I have never heard from Magellan Top brass.
My order still shows pending. I called my bank and cancelled the charge. After 15 calls and no answer from anyone as to what the heck is going on I said enough!
Their website now states the North American update is no longer available as too many people who purchased the update are having problems. NO, REALLY!
They claim they will reload when they get their heads out their butts.

What a Joke!
I hope someone answers what the Garmin update is in your question.
3rd Q 06 seems really off!
Here we are in 4th Q 07. A year Old?????
The problem seems to be that Navteq supplies the maps for Garmin, Magellan, Clarion, Pioneer, Becker, Pioneer, and even some TOM TOM units and others.

Dom, been there done that... :-)

Dom, I received a map DVD and autorization code, but have been unable to get it to work. I tried to install the maps, but the software will not accept my authorization code. Same reason is my serial number starts with a “0″ and is 13 digits long, which is what I provided to Magellan when I ordered the software. The problem is the map software automatically detects the serial number, but it drops the leading “0″ and makes it a 12 digit serial number instead of 13. You can not modify the serial number, it is detected by the software. I could not get Magellan customer service to understand this and they keep telling me I provided the wrong serial number. It seems we must have been one of the first to have the issue with the leading "0" being left off when the software detected the unit's serial number. Basically, I have not gotten any further with Magellan's technical service help desk after multiple, multiple calls, BUT I did send a FAX to the corporate headquarters just telling my whole delima and how frustrating it is to have a great unit with such poor customer support. To my amazement I received a call from a Magellan Quality Assurance Engineer ( I would have thought that term to be an oxymoron until I received the call) and he sent me an email with a new autorization code with my serial number minus the leading "0"... it worked like a charm. I now have my unit updated, took a few hours, but I expected that. The new map GDF version is Q306. I checked a few of the newer roads that were not on the old map version and they are on there now. I am back to being a vey happy Magellan customer (How quickly we forgive and forget when we are happy with our toys). I hope that they can get their customer service situation worked out. Oh, by the way, the map upgrade kits included an AC charger (which I already had) so I didn't feel the cost of the update was a bad as I first thought. If you can't get it resolved, we could get in contact with each other and I could get you the email of the person who assisted me. I would rather not post his email here public, but would be willing to provide it to you by email one on one. On the road again... (Music Playing) Thanks, Greg

I never get lost... people are always telling me where to go! But I use my Nuvi 350 to get back.

Greg, Dom, et al I do have

Greg, Dom, et al

I do have had the exact same problems you have. When I called the tech chastised me for not entering my serial number correctly (adding the 0 before the rest) when I paid for the update on the site. He quickly quited down though when I reminded him that THEIR software also didn't recognize the zero when it went to try the update.

Anyway, Greg if you would be so kind as to email me the contact info for your source to bob.bichlerATgmail.com I would appreciate it.

Not too bright.....

Actually, I don't know why they would chastise you, their website will not allow you to "NOT" enter the Zero... believe me, I tried. Their own website complains that it is not a valid number if you don't include the zero.... Hmmmm, ZERO.... sounds like the amount of service they give.

I am still waiting...........
