alerts

I intalled the cracker barrel poi from this site and using the poi loader in the manual mode set the alarm to sound at 1 mile.Maybe I have got this all wrong but is the alarm suppose to sound when I come in contact with any cracker barrel location within that 1 mile setting?I just traveled down i95/i75 and passed many of the cracker barrels within the set distance and the alarm did not go off.If I added a cracker barrel as a stop by hitting go it would sound the alarm for only that one cracker barrel. Is that the way it is suppose to work but only sounding the alarm on the one you add as a stop or any one you pass by?

No, you're right...

The default type of alert set by POI Loader is called "Along Road". These trigger when you are within the set distance (and travelling at or above the set speed, if applicable) and on the same road as the POI.
If you are in Map mode, you have to be literally on the same road as the POI. In Routing mode, it considers the entire route as one road, for the purpose of calculating the alert distance.

POI Loader is capable of setting another kind of alert - the TourGuide version (which I realise is not going to help you with your C340). These appear to be a straight-forward 'Proximity Circle'.

There seems to be a third kind of Proximity alert that the unit is capable of responding to. They are used by Garmin's Safety Camera database. I've not fully understood them yet, but seem to be comprised of zones that you have to pass through in order. Presumably, that is why they can be made directional. (I could be wrong though wink

In general

I have found the Crackerbarrel locations to be just far enough off the highway as to not trigger the alert.
I have them in my Custom POI's and when it's "hungry time" I just look for the closest to my direction of travel and "GO" for it !

Exactly! I don't do alerts on restaurants, cause I don't care about them if I am not hungry, otherwise, I go and search for them.

That is what I did also.Just picked one on the POI list.Like I stated on the orginial forum it did sound for that one I picked and hit go on.I would think by having it set for a 1 mile radius it should pick any of them within a mile.Does the speed setting play any part in the alarm?I left mine at zero.

yes, speed can have an

yes, speed can have an affect on them, but if you have them at zero it should always alert, if other things are also in order, such as being on the road and you are on the same road.

That's the thing though...the "Along Road" type of alert is not a "radius"...it's a measurement..by road, not as the crow flies.

If you're 'Routing', it can do a lookahead and know if you will pass the proximity point-and thus alert at the proper distance from it.
If you're in map mode, it will just come as a big surprise to it, if/when you turn onto the road containing the point. In this case, you'd get the alert much closer than anticipated.

If you don't turn onto that road-then no alert at all.

(This really needs a diagram!)

I guess having the alert for

I guess having the alert for the cracker barrel is a no go unless you are on the road it is located. It sure seems odd when you can see the signs and see them off the interstate that the alert will not work.It sure would be a nice feature.I will be travelling to some natural parks next year so that should produce better results since I will be on the same road sooner or later.

TourGuides...alright for some ;-)

For those with compatible units, I reckon that TourGuide audio alerts could do the job.

Assuming you stick with csv format, you could have a "TourGuide CrackerBarrel.csv" and a "TourGuide CrackerBarrel.mp3".

If loaded in automatic mode, you get a 1/4mile (circular) Proximity Alert. In manual mode, you can change the distance, while retaining the alert-type as TourGuide. You'd have to make sure that TourGuide's were set to play automatically.
Obviously, the same audio would play for each entry (which is not really in the spirit of a Tour Guide! - a switch to .gpx format would be necessary to fix that)

This might address the perennial "Rest Area" problem as well...
