Anyone having problem with suction cup mount/disc?

Not sure if the problem is due to the extreme heat in the 'Valley of the Sun' (Phoenix, AZ) but I've had my 660 for less than three months (I'm still on the FM traffic trial period) and already having trouble keeping the unit in place.

First, the permanent disc came off from the adhesive. Not from the dash, but the double-sided tape came off the disc side. Fortunately, Garmin express-shipped replacement discs (Thanks Garmin!). Then, the mount started losing it's suction lately. For example, I just got back from a 30 min driving, and the mount fell off the disc twice and the unit landed on my console...When I put it on, it's on tight. No wobbles and looseness, then 5-10 min later it falls off.

Is this due to the heat or anyone else is experiencing this problem?

What I do is that I have my suction cup mounted on a special antiglare lens that I got from an old projector. I mounted that on my dash with 3M tape. Whenever my suction cup would fall off, it was because the heat cooked the rubber. Also, I've noticed that if you leave it on long enough, the rubber will stick to the glass, and leave a black ring.

You can apply lip balm to the suction cup and a little water, before mounting again. This keeps the cup lubricated, and prevents it from sticking to the glass.

Garmin will give you another one, better rubber

I called Garmin and told them about the problem with the mount and the infamous "black ring on the windshield" and they sent me a new one, this one appears so far to be much better, removed it several times and had no issues with black rings

Beanbag

Got my Garmin beanbag this week. Today I placed it on the dashboard. Works great, leaves no marks, won't fall of the windshield, and hides easily. Will have to do a longer trip to see how it performs, but so far I am satisfied.

Just got the new TomTom 720. The suction mount seems to work well,They must of improved it

Disc mount

Mine did the same thing(kept falling off) but I just kept pushing on it, after a few days it seemed to stick. Haven't had any problem since.(I'm also in 100+ degree temperatures.)

Update Re Suction Cup Mount Problems

Lenster wrote:

I have been having the exact same problem. I think I will be trying the drop or two of water on the cup also. Has any one tried Velcro. Before I bought my Garmin I was using my Verizon cell phone w/the VZ Navigator and used the Velcro to mount a cell phone holder. Worked flawlessly.

Update. I placed heavy duty Velcro on the bottom of the suction cup pad, on that side I placed the hook portion, the patterned side, and on the permanent mounting disk on my dashboard I placed the loops portion or the fuzzy side. I place the GPS which I keep mounted to the stand on and it sticks perfectly. I did this in both my vehicle and my wife's and no more problems with the GPS coming loose, including rough roads etc. When I park, I always remove my GPS and take it with me, I just grasp the stand and lift with the little tab made for that purpose. This should eliminate any problems with the GPS coming loose and falling.
This is for my Garmin StreetPilot I5, but I believe this can probably be used for all Garmins, and probably for any brand of GPS.

3M Dual Lock

Lenster,

Check out the Dual Lock from 3M. It is by far better than any velcro you can find for mouting items (velcro is good to tie things together, but not mounting). They have a wide selection of size available. One I use is most is this: 3M eStore. They also have one that is rubber backed for more flexibility.

The best part is that unlike velcro where it has a slight give because of the 'fuzzy' side, this one doesn't.

Since you're in AZ, get El Baggo de Bean! Seriously, I use one with a Street Pilot and one with a Nuvi. They work great. My problem with the suction mount was more dealing with the cold.

I wanted more custom look so I built one with a gooseneck. The wiring is inside the gooseneck so it's clean looking. Tailspin thought it was pretty good...

3M Dual Lock sounds like a winner !

I bought the Vent mount from the mount guys for my truck, and transferred the power cord to that mount.
Does any one know where I can get another vehicle power cord for my original mount? I want to be able to
use the C-340 body in both my truck and my wife's car (which I will use the DUAL LOCK and suction cup mount)?
Any help is greatly appreciated.. Thanks in advance!

3M Dual Lock

Thanks Traveler. I have an E-Z Pass mounted to my windshield for tolls and the Dual Lock appears to be different from the rigid material that is used on my E-Z Pass.
I felt that the type used on the E-Z Pass was way to rigid for the repeated times I would be removing the stand etc. I felt that because of the way the material bonds it would cause the stand to break from repeatedly removing it, but this 3M product appears to be different from the type used on the E-Z Pass and I feel it would prove very usefull.
For now the heavy duty Velcro has been working like a charm on both vehicles, so for now I will continue with it, but if there is a need to replace it, or when we buy a new vehicle I will certainly check out the 3M product.

E-ZPass fasteners

I used the E-ZPass fasteners for my E-ZPass (of course) and also for my radar detector (suction cups kept coming off). It has never come off even with the temp range its exposed to, the stuff is just amazing.

I've never tried it for a GPS due to the weight. I'd like to hear if the E-ZPass tape works from someone who has tried it.

Garmin 660 Suction Cup wont Suck

Same problem if not worse. From day one my unit would not hold for more than a few seconds. Clean, Play, Warm it up (i live in Colorado) and maybe a couple hours hold time. I think the suction ring is a tiny bit too small. Still trying to work with Garmin on a fix.

fix for suction cup

Try this to fix the suction cup:

1. place suction cup in boiling temperature water
2. wait a few minutes
3. remove
4. (optional) apply a LITTLE bit of lip balm or vaseline to it

I got mine from Amazon.com - great price, free Super Saver Shipping. Just make sure you get the right one for the model Garmin you have. For example, here is the link for the Nüvi Series and StreetPilot I Series, C530, C550 and C580 GPS Navigators.

Garmin mounts.

I don't get it!I own a construction company and have just about every automotive garmin they make and just as I getting used to loving one the come out with another,I love the design of the mount on the nuvi 760 (the way the unit clips on to the mount)but on the nuvi 770 the mount is way different,I'm always afraid that if I'm not careful I'm going to break the little contacts off and the traffic receiver cord sticks out the side so it can easily be pulled out or worse broke off,the cord on the 760 plugs in nice and sung on the back. What was Garmin thinking!Same with the mounts, the mount is a great design accept for the stupid BLACK suction cup, come on guys! What's wrong with making it clear and UV protected, instead you make it black so it cooks to the windshield and has to be ripped off leaving a nice black circle that has to be cleaned off,and that's not even the worst part. Now I have a nice collection of mounts that will never suck to anything ever again. And yes I agree the bean bag mount is great, but let's face it,it was made for flat surfaces not car dashboards and only works if it's flat. Don't get me wrong,I do love my Garmin's but please, stop putting stupid crap on them like book reader(how often are you going to read a book and drive at the same time?)Bluetooth (everyone I talk to on it says that it sounds like I'm talking on 2 tin cans)give it up.This is what I think, for the price of some of these, get rid of all the crap and give free map updates and free P.O.I.This is a GPS not a entertainment center!

I agree

The beanbag mount does a great job. Plus, it's legal in California too. No clue why they outlaw suction cups, but no matter! Only possible downside I see with the beanbag is that should there be a collision, it could turn into an in-car missile.

AZ + OffRoad

I live in Phoenix AZ too, and the suction cup loses suction after about 15-30 minutes. Thanks a lot, I'm gonna try out the methods I found here. I drive offroad sometimes so hopefully it will hold in over the bumps.

After all you have read on this posting you still aren't convinced to spend 20 bucks for the bean bag? Good luck...

Tried Silicone spray?

So, I bought a new mount for my Garmin online at Amazon. Decent price - BUT - it was not the adjustable type like I currently have and in the place where the disk is mounted, it won't work.

Ship it back? I would wind up gettig maybe 2 dollars back after I pay for shipping. Not worth the hassel. Chaulk it up as another lesson learned.

What to do? I tried some Teflon grease, but that dried up and the mount still fell off after a week or two.

I had a can of Automotive "Silicone" spray, the kind you use on rubber door seals. I thought it was worth a try.

Clean the suction surface and disc with Windex or other glass cleaner that doesn't leave a residue. I LIGHTLY sprayed the suction cup surface. It doesn't need to be dripping wet, just a shiny surface that's slightly wet. It's been on there 3 weeks now and it's still got a good grip and hasn't fallen off. Even after several days of sitting in the sun (facing south) all day.

One word of warning. Be careful with this stuff. If you get it on your hands, they will be slippery until you use a heavy duty hand cleaner. I sprayed down the door seals on my truck 2 years ago and they are still slick to the touch.

The answer is spit

It's a renewable resource, and environmentally friendly, unlike silicone or teflon. It's never failed, and it's God's gift to GPS mounts!

Tried that

Tried that. Only good for a couple of days. It also leaves a residue that dries up and has to be cleaned off, as the more it builds up, the shorter the time between needed applications.

Nuvi 660 Mount

I used the windshield mount for about a year before I removed it. The rubber had deteriorated and would no longer hold. I never tried the adhesive mount because I didn't want to scar the dash. I purchased a cheap vent mount from eBay for $4.50 (free shipping). This has worked great although there is a slight vibration when the Nuvi is giving direction or talking through my phone (bluetooth connection).

No problems

Have had the disk and suction cup mount for over two years. Have never had any problems (yet).
I have a consol inbetween the seats and mounted the disk there and put the suction cup on it each time we get in the car. It works just great. Live in Texas, gets hot but my car is garaged almost all the time, just use the car for vacation and around town, this may make a difference.

metricman wrote:

Well, it's worked for almost 2 months now.

My 660 has not fallen off once since I applied the Silicone. I "tugged" on the mount yesterday and it did not want to come loose.

I'd call it a success.

My GPS and sunction cup

My GPS and sunction cup holder just fall off this week. May be it is related to the cold temperature 35 degree F (outside temperature). Since I left the GPS and sunction cup inside the car (hidden of course), the sunction cup became cold over night and temporary lost it's flexibility due to the cold temperature. I also saw some dirt on the disc and clean it and now it works fine.

If your GPS falls down because the sunction cup won't hold up, try to clean it first. It may has some dirt on it.

I use the vent mount and sticky mount

I have 2 vehicles. I use the removable swivel air vent mount ($5) on the SUV and the sticky mount ($7) on the car. I also bought a replacement bracket ($6) so I can leave the bracket on each mount. I purchased them from Semsons.com and you can search on the internet for a 5% off code. Both mounts work great so far.

Had problems with Suction

Had problems with Suction mount coming off when applied "dry" with 660... even when new....

A bit of saliva on suction cup cured it..
We've had it 2+ years now... and never had it come loose since the "Saliva" Mod! smile!

one tip...

The very best thing I've tried to form a really good seal of the suction cup is regular liquid dish soap. Apply a thin layer around the rim of the cup and apply as usual.

Note that the cup will slip around on the mounting surface but this is a good thing since it allows you to fine-tune the positioning. The soap will evaporate after an hour or so and will then allow the cup to lock into position. The soap forms a very good seal and will also prevent the cup from "welding" itself to the windshield in the summer heat.

I picked up an extra disc mount for a second car. I found if you moisten the rim on the suction cup mount it will stick much better. I have driven over 1600 miles on one trip without it slipping once.

Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things!

big problem

Yes, I've had problems, not the same as yours though.

The contraptiion that with the suction cup, power cable, and mounting ball for my garmin 760, keeps coming "unsucked" from the disc, making my gps and mount thing fall into the passenger side floor. That's a pretty serious problem in heavy traffic - having to bend over and grab something off the passenger side floor....well most of the time I just pull over to do that.

i HAVE pretty much given up on it and used the suction cup to mount the gps on the window. Its apparently legal now in California anyway, although i believe its supposed to be in the lower left corner, i have it in the lower center. And its also much less risky now that, well, lets just say its less risky for me now that I've gotten some legal matters relating to traffic tickets taken care of and don't have to worry about getting arrested if i get pulled over smile

cassette mount

Hi just received garmin 255w for Christmas and found that if you have a car that still has a cassette player that you can modify a cassette tape to hold the mount that comes with the unit and slide it into the deck to mount the GPS.

Uh, yeah that method does work...

although I hate to use it if I can avoid it. I prefer when it rains or I use my wiper/washer to take moisture off the windshield instead. Seems less "yucky"!
