Anyone having problem with suction cup mount/disc?

Not sure if the problem is due to the extreme heat in the 'Valley of the Sun' (Phoenix, AZ) but I've had my 660 for less than three months (I'm still on the FM traffic trial period) and already having trouble keeping the unit in place.

First, the permanent disc came off from the adhesive. Not from the dash, but the double-sided tape came off the disc side. Fortunately, Garmin express-shipped replacement discs (Thanks Garmin!). Then, the mount started losing it's suction lately. For example, I just got back from a 30 min driving, and the mount fell off the disc twice and the unit landed on my console...When I put it on, it's on tight. No wobbles and looseness, then 5-10 min later it falls off.

Is this due to the heat or anyone else is experiencing this problem?

Suction Cup Losing Suction

I would look up Stickysuc on Amazon. It allows you to stick your suction cup to the glass rather than keep replacing suction cups with the same result. You can buy it on Amazon

suction cups

I have never had good luck with suction cups. I have been using the bean bag for the last few years and am suction cup free.

We also live in AZ. Went to bean-bag mount, solves the problem. We have a dash cover which makes it even easier to stay in place, but not needed, just keeps dash cooler.

Vasaline or cooking oil, both work far better than water !!!!!!

Good idea. Thanks

Yes, they suck

Get a beanbag

murphy's law of suction cups

If it is important that the suction cup does not let loose - it will let loose, and will do so at the most inopportune time.

I had to switch to the bag too

Even in normal heat (low 90's), the windshield cup always came loose and would dump the unit in my lap as I was driving.

Yeah, suction cups need

Yeah, suction cups need occasional replacement. They eventually leak and lose suction.

Agreed,...

I had the same issues and also switched to a Bean Bag holder.

Same here

Beanbag on a covered dash. Once removed, no tell tale sign of a GPS.

Suction mount on plastic

I use beanbag mount. On wife's car, for lower profile, so I use suction cup on thick plastic on dash and a piece of rubber in between to prevent sliding. Depends on flatness of your dash and plastic can be cut to shape.

Arkon Mount

The heat in Florida would kill the suction mount, so I installed an Arkon APGN-VSN ball mount up high in my vehicle above the rear view mirror. It keeps the Garmin out of sight from outside, but easy to use. The Arkon mount is about $8 at Amazon.

Plumbers grease works perfectly. Over 90 degrees here and sticks will no problem. Make sure it's grease and only use sparingly. Hard to remove.

Well on my ancient Nuvi 855 I also had the problem of it loosing it's grip. What ever and however I decided to do it I do not know. I cleaned the 10 year old suction cup with rubbing alcohol and now it sticks like glue !
In fact I have to pull like hell to get it off the windshield !!!

BTW: I too spend a lot of time in 86 degF weather in the winter, but I remove the GPS when the car sits for a few weeks at a time.
I have too much fun riding my motorcycle.

I agree with this. Windex works just as well as rubbing alcohol for me, and is more likely to be near my car. Cleaning the inside of the glass also helps.

Not only does the Sticky mount work, it has a longer throw from the windshield...

Both GPS's now on this mount... and I'm quite happy with it!

cleaning

has always worked for us. Seems like car mfgs now make it so a smartphone can be placed somewhere on the dash and used as a gps. Perhaps Garmin and car cos. should collaborate on some standard where a garmin could do the same (it doesn't have to be a battle of OEM vs. Garmin), more in the interest of safety. When you think about it, the gps on the dash is not ideal....

Flat adhesive disk on the dash with the suction mount.

Located in the Phoenix Metro area in AZ.

I had my 885T mounted in my truck (2003 F250) since 2006 with a new dash disc on the dash with the powered mound on the suction cup mount stuck to it. It was still there when the unit was stolen. Since they took the GPS in its case in the drivers door, the mount and everything was left behind.

Last week I got a Nuvi 57LMT to replace the missing unit, removed the old suction cup mount with the powered mount and charging cable, cleaned the top of the disc and just put the new suction cup and mount on it.

I basically never remove the suction mount from the disc with the mount and just put the GPS onto the mount each time I use it and take the GPS off when I get out of the truck.

Even in Arizona heat the suction cup with the powered mount on it as well as the dash disc they sit on has held up.

As for using the suction cup mount on a windshield, I've never had any real luck with that especially during the summer. So I gave up trying to do that years ago.

troublel with suction cups

I have always had a problem with my RV5510 sticking to the smooth vertical panel below our dash. It finally fell off one too many times and the screen cracked making the tough screen unusable.

suction cup - another method

Found the link at the bottom from a search. It's in Chinese, but you can just click and watch the video, and kind of figure out what they suggest to do...

Below is what they're doing in a nutshell... (if you don't intend to move your suction cup every so often)

1. Dip the old suction cup in a hot boiling water to wash and remove the dirt stuck to the cup. this sort of brings the cup back to life a little.

2. Wipe off any liquid on the cleaned up suction cup and apply a good coat of egg white to the cup's suction surface.

3. Put the suction cup back to the location where it's needed and wait until the egg white is dried up completely before hanging anything onto to the suction cup.

For many years, I just use a Garmin bean-bag thing that sits on my dashboard. It seems more reliable than suction cups.

Sticky Pad GPS Dash Mount

I'm also in Arizona and this dash mount has worked well "Sticky GPS Dash Mount" https://www.amazon.com/HandStands-Sticky-Pad-GPS-Dash/dp/B00...
However, I see that they are not longer available cheaply at Amazon. Maybe, something similar will work. The bean bags were too bulky for me. Also, I not sure if California is still enforcing the "GPS attached to the windshield law" if you travel there often.

No problems here

No problems here

Never had good luck...

With the suction cup mount on my car's windshield. No matter how clean I'd keep the windshield what ever suction cup mounting I put on it would eventually fall off an hour or two later. Nothing like having a GPS cradle fall OUT the window while driving when suction cupped to the windshield near the pillar and the suction cup failed.

Wound up buying the Garmin Friction Mount (https://amzn.com/B0035JL4V2) on sale for around $8 a few years ago from some website (not Amazon). Works well and haven't had it slide on the dash yet.
