Anyone having problem with suction cup mount/disc?

Not sure if the problem is due to the extreme heat in the 'Valley of the Sun' (Phoenix, AZ) but I've had my 660 for less than three months (I'm still on the FM traffic trial period) and already having trouble keeping the unit in place.

First, the permanent disc came off from the adhesive. Not from the dash, but the double-sided tape came off the disc side. Fortunately, Garmin express-shipped replacement discs (Thanks Garmin!). Then, the mount started losing it's suction lately. For example, I just got back from a 30 min driving, and the mount fell off the disc twice and the unit landed on my console...When I put it on, it's on tight. No wobbles and looseness, then 5-10 min later it falls off.

Is this due to the heat or anyone else is experiencing this problem?

Interesting. Ive had the same probloem...seems to be much more frequjent since the weather has cooled off here in Southern californai....started happening much more regularly since halloween. But now I've switched to sticking it ot the window, now that i've gotten my tickets taken care of, and nothing hanging over me and my drivers licence..

Bean Bag Mount for me

I use the bean bag mount for two reasons: First I also had issues with it sticking and secondly my car got broken into a few years ago due to telltale suction marks. (before I knew better)

They didn't get my gps because I would never leave it in the car. I don't even leave it there when I go into a store.

Bean bag works great for me, as others have said it can be hidden from view when not in use.

better suction cup device

i picked out a bendy suction-cup mounting bracket at REI, a "bracketron mobile IT grip" (REI item number 769764 ) for $20 and have not been let down. i won't claim to have had it in phoenix heat but it's been well over 100° in hot sun in colorado, and hasn't let loose. the way this differs from a 'passive' suction device is this keeps the de-formed shape of the suction cup (keeping the vacuum intact) by way of a ratchet mechanism. i can say it fits a vista hcx very well -- a bit large in fact for the hcx, but can't speak to the compatibility with other, larger units.

Friction Mount ?

Has anybody tried the friction mount? The partially sticky pad that temporarily sticks to the dash. I've heard it mentioned as an alternate mount.

If you are asking about this

If you are asking about this one http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Garmin+-+Portable+Auto+Friction+... the answer is yes.I purchased it on sale during the holiday for 14 dollars at Best Buy.I used it on a 750 mile trip and it worked great.Like the low profile when setting on the dash.Plus it is flexible to mold to the dash.I also have the other friction mount shaped like a crows foot.It does a good job also but not in comparison to the other. One thing I like about the new one is when you touch the screen it is steady in the mount and doesn't give. Some users have reported a film on the dash after use.I did not have that problem.Plan to use the new one all the time and give other mount to my son. With any of the friction mounts you need to clean the bottom of the mount once in a while.

My streetpilot suction mount

My streetpilot suction mount melted to the windshield the first summer I had it. I tried to remove it and ended up tearing up the edge and it hasn't worked since. Maybe using light reflecting color would have prevented the melting.

I went with the garmin dash

I went with the garmin dash mount, no sliding and I have taking some big turns. Try Amazon for pricing.

Dash Mount

I too went with the dash-mount in my car. Cost me $40 in Best Buy. The cheaper ones tend to slide a bit.

I also use the suction disc in my other vehicle. However, i have built a separate mounting arm, using bright chrome as the mounting area. The arm fits to the centre console and places the nuvi just where I want it. No problems with the disc. I have to ensure the chrome stays clean. Surprising how much pollution creeps under the seal.

nuvi 855. Life is not fair. I don't care who told you it is.

I don't know about it being only heat related....

I had my suction cup mounts in plenty of heat and then extream cold they always stayed attached, I think its more the lack of humidity.

The cup is drying out and dropping off. In Texas and Florida I've had my older suction cup mount stay in place it 115 degree heat in Texas and mid 90's in Florida with 90% humidity. In Alaska I had the cup hold in 35 below zero. I did have it freeze to the windshield a few times in Alaska, but it stayed put.

Me too

I gave up on the double-sided tape. Finally mounted it to a switch plate on my dash. Of course, this presented the problem of sealing where the bolt went through the plate... countersunk and filled with bondo, then painted it black. Hasn't lost suction in several months. Plus, it's out of view.

Suctions Cups

Had problems with my suction cup, coming off several times a day. Even ordered a new one after checking here and trying some of the suggestions.

Then I cleaned the old one, used some WD40 around the outer edge, spread it with my finger. It has been stuck now for over a month and not come loose. Several times have taken my hands and shook it but it stays put.

Got a new cup for a rainy day.

I'm still using the suction

I'm still using the suction mount that came with the Nuvi 660 Years ago.. Still works.... Augmented with some saliva at times.... but it works fine in heat or cold......

Suction Cup Mount

I too have been using the vent mount and a bean bag for years. The suction cup mount was on the window for several days in Miami this summer and I could not get it loose. Being the Garmin mount that is included with the unit, it broke. However, I did order a more robust window mount from the Mount Guys that I take when I travel on business for use in rental cars.

Suction Cup

I tried the water and several other items on it but they all did not work. The WD40 really worked and has stayed in place even when I use my hand to shake it.

Me also

I ended up buying this gadget and removing the front when i got my 3790lmt. The front was for my old 765T.
The Mount for my 3790 fit perfectly. The suction cup is much bigger. I don't put it on my windshield because you get that round cup mark when you remove it.
When first i used it, it also would fall off eventually. Decided to go with the bean bag. Mine is pretty big, sits on the dash of my truck all the time.
I don't leave the unit in the vehicle. I also had to glue the suction cup to the bean bag base, not sure these things last for ever. I also take it into Momma's car. Sits ok on the ford focus dash.

Anyone having problem with suction cup mount

I've recently had problems with my suction cup mount (about 3 years old). On looking at it closely I found that the rubber was separating from the mount at the point where it pulls on the rubber to help form the suction, giving me less pull and causing the cup to soon release from the glass. I was able, with the aid of a spring hook, to coax the rubber back over the lip it was separating from, but after a few minutes it slipped off again. Looks like there may have been little rubber threads molded to the plastic that are now broken. Not sure what if anything can be done next, wondering if I could use an adhesive to reattach the rubber to the plastic and if so what type would be appropriate.

Hmm, after reading all this

Hmm, after reading all this I may have to invest in a beanbag mount. The suction cup is a pain to stick on in winter, I have to run the defroster and get the window warmed up before it wants to lock into place. Lately I've been using my cell phone in its dock, and keeping the GPS on the seat.

Beanbag for me.

I used to use the suction cup mount when I first got my GPS but it fell off every now & then. It also would leave a mark on the windshield that told thieves I had a GPS hidden in the car.
I purchased a dash beanbag mount and never looked back.

Contact cement will work if the surface is rough or can be made rough.

The rubber has little nubs

The rubber has little nubs that sit in holes in the plastic rod that the suction cup attaches to. Contact cements do work, up to a point. When the rubber actually tears it's all over.

It happened to me. The rubber tore at the top and the mount would no longer work, even after applying both a contact cement and duct tape. Fortunately, a call to Garmin fixed that problem. They sent a new mount.

Epoxy or Gorilla Glue

Just use Epoxy or Gorilla Glue. I promise you'll never have issues mounting your suction cup again. People just can't thank me enough for this advice

Mine too....

My mount also comes unstuck. I have the disk mounted to the dashboard of my truck, then I stick the suction cup to that. PS. I tried the saliva too. After awhile it does come loose.

suction mount - clean is key

I too was having issues a few years ago with these, but found that the key is mounting to a surface that is dust and oil free. I suggest the following:

To mount the disk:
obtain a clean cloth and some 90% isopropyl to clean the dash surface prior to mounting - make sure it is completely dry before placing the disk; let it set up for approximately 1 hour prior to use. Note: a lint free micro cloth works best.

Suction cup:
Once again the key is an oil and dust free surface. I use lint free alcohol wipes to clean the both the disk or windshield surface and the concave (underside) area of the suction mount especially the outer edges that mate to the dash disk or windshield surface. The removal of the dust and oil allows for the creation of a durable seal.

I have been doing both techniques for years and have no issues. Once applied as above, my mounts remain affixed for months in the heat of summer or cold of winter.

Hope this helps.

a quick wipe will also get rid of the windshield rings - I do this when on vacation when using the gps in the family truckster.

.

A little warm water to remove dust and oil from both surfaces should do the trick. A drop of dishwashing soap or liquid hand soap makes it that much more effective.

PS: warm water and soap is a great way to clean smudges off sunglasses.

How does the beanbag work?

Do you just place the GPS in it with no suction cup or holder?

You take the cradle off the suction cup stalk, and snap in on the beanbag stalk.

I gave up on the suction

I gave up on the suction cup. Tried most of the suggestion in this thread. Bought a dash mount from an ebay seller. Works great. Wish I bought one years ago.

Just not seeing it...

I googled images of the beanbag mount. It appears you still need to use the suction cup mount to the disk in the center of the beanbag. Is there another type with a bracket that I can just mount my tomtom to?

garmin bean bag

The Garmin Bean Bag mount has a different ball mount than the suction cup. T2 doesn't offer a bean bag mount with an attached mounting arm.

Suction Cup

I don't use the windshield to mount my GPS on, the car has a glass in the center of dash that a factory GPS could be put and other info is displayed. I have used that glass and now I put the small disk on the flat area below the glass. This gets signal ok, easy to see, reach and unless a crook looks closely they would never see the unit.

Hand Sanitizer

I was out in the Mountains of Colorado last week. Tired of my GPS falling off I used Hand Sanitiser on the suction mount and it works as good as new. I think the gel in it make a great seal! It's been over a week so far.

Mr Stickee

I use a gel disk that you put on the suction cup and then stick to your windshield or dash. I use it on my dish and it works perfectly. Look it up on eBay ... worth the couple of bucks and no more big sand bag anti-skid mount.

Using your windshield invites car prowlers as the suction cup leaves a mark that the thieves look for.

I Have One

I have an iPhone holder that came with one of those sticky gel suction cups. I can tell you that it takes two hands and maybe a pair of piers on the pull tab to get that thing loose. It will even hold on a mild curve contour. It really sticks!
