12 Volt power cord

I hate my long power cord. I only need one about 3ft long. Has anyone cut one in to and made it shorter?

Well, I guess I will bring this topic back to its original subject...

I have seen site that show a direct wiring of the GPSr but not shortening of the cord. I just keep mine coiled up with a velcro strap.

Depends

Depends on you level of expertise, however, that being said the cigarette lighter end on some (if not all) units has a built in fuse, so I would go to Radio Shack (or like) and get the end for the unit, note the polarity of current plug and proceed shortening it, soldering the new connector on, and use of heat shrink. There is no reason it shouldn't work, but again, depends on the individual needs and competency of the person doing the work. Hope this helps...

This website might help...

I know it has a lot of data for motorcycles, but their advice on using blade-type fuses rather than spring-loaded is sound. And it has a lot of pictures to help with any install.

Good point...

But is the receiver in the cable or in the lighter-plug end? If it's the plug, then I would shorten the cable, IMHO.

Better yet, you can buy a lighter socket with a 2-wire open cable on it. Mount the socket under the dash out of sight and connect the new socket to the proper 12VDC feeds. Then plug your GPSr cable to the new socket hidden away from view.

I like this socket from Radio Shack.

I have taken apart cords before where the wires were like hair and impossible to solder right. Again, like you said, it depends on the level of expertise that a person may have. Me, I dont like small wires.

No guts, no gain. There are

No guts, no gain. There are 2 covered wires and 1 ground. All you need is 3 small heat shrink tubes and 1 large one to go over the finished joint. Strip the wire back far enough that you can stager the connections. Solder each using Rosin core solder and cover each with heat shrink. Then cover all with the bigger shrink. I now have a power cord the length I need

As I said

As I said, all depends on your expertise. May be a daunting task for some, no problem for others. Not everyone has the same talents or desires, which is why this site works for all of us...

12 Volt Power Cord

Personally, I wouldn't cut it either. Use a velcro strap to shorten it up. You may not always have the same vehicle or you may rent a vehicle you want to use it in and now you are stuck with a cord that is too short.

Also, the FM traffic receiver may use the cord as its antenna. Shortening it up may affect your reception of the traffic signal. Not 100% sure about that but I would err on the side of caution.

I'd like to hardwire my Nuvi 660

Anyone know where I might get a set of the proprietary connectors that are used on the FM traffic receiver and the Nuvi mount?
