Pop Up Ads on My GPS ???

I'm regularly getting pop up ads for local businesses while navigating a route. It only happens on local roads or 2 lane highways, and so far, not while driving interstates. The ads include a navigable route from my location to the business

Some ads even have voice announcements which luckily can be muted. The worst part is, while the ad audio is playing, normal route directions can't be heard! There appears to be no way to disable or remove these ads via the menu. So far, it only happens on my RV890 and showed up after the last firmware & map update. I have a second RV890 in my truck which has not been updated for over a year and it does not suffer this malady.

At first, I thought the ads were coming through a Garmin app via my smartphone and triggered by my location. I unpaired my phone but the ads still appear. This tells me they are part of the firmware or in the map database.

Now, I'm afraid to do any more updates on any of my GPSr's for fear of downloading more advertisements!

Has anyone else noticed this behavior on an RV890 or any other GPS for that matter?

What gives Garmin?? IMO this is a sure fire way to kill what's left of their automotive GPS market.

None of the posts 2 months ago worked?

You posted this 2 months ago and posting again? My Dezl 770 has Foursquare which might be doing that. Do you have Trip Advisor on your unit? Check and see if it is on your Garmin and active. Other thing might be pairing via bluetooth with your phone.

Yes

I did post this a few months ago but over that time, none of the suggestions, including unpairing with my smartphone, made any difference.

I was hoping someone else noticed this also and perhaps found a cure. So far, it's only the RV890 that displays these ads. If this is the only unit affected, I'll sell it and try another GPSr. I just want to be sure it isn't a common problem involving other units.

2 Suggestions

First, call Garmin and see if they can help. Their telephone help is pretty good.
Second, try a factory reset and be ready to reload all your favorites, settings, POIs.

Apparently...

This is nothing new. It's been reported in other forums for over a decade:

https://forums.bmwmoa.org/threads/garmin-with-ads.57482/

https://www.thehulltruth.com/marine-electronics-forum/212823...

It appears these ads are associated with free map updates and they placed in the map database by Garmin. The GPSr has nothing to do with it.

It's funny others haven't noticed it during all this time. It may be that we've just not travelled in areas where businesses are paying to advertise?

Not sure I've got this right

but you may be seeing the results of the "up ahead" so-called feature. Try turning it off. See p. 27 in your manual.

Thanks

Thanks for the tip but I already tried disabling it with no luck.

Apparently, these ads reside on the map and, depending on where you travel, they can be few and far between. Unfortunately, there are several in my area that pop up every time I navigate a local route.

From what I found on the net, most GPSr's, regardless of age, will display these ads after map updates.

Just another reason to switch to vehicle nav systems and Google maps I guess.

A growing trend.....

Sad to hear Garmin (or the mapping company) has yielded to slipping advertisements into its products. Seems to be a growing trend.

No ads for me

I have several Garmin GPS units (3597, DS65, DS76) and I drive all around Southern California and never seen an ad.

Can you enable the screenshot function and take a screenshot when it happens and show us? It's very strange that a high-end, expensive unit like the RV890 is showing ads.

A long time ago, there use to be ads on GPS units because of the free lifetime Navteq traffic subscription. These ads pay for the traffic subscription and were not related to map updates. A Garmin rep confirms this in the first link that you provided, but that discussion was over a decade ago.

Nowadays the traffic info comes from a variety of sources https://www.garmin.com/en-IE/traffic/ and there is no subscription. It's free. You get it through the Drive app via your smartphone or through an FM traffic receiver. Although I've found the range of the Drive traffic data is really small for some reason, like a 10 mile radius at best.

I've Seen Them...

...on Google Maps. I've never seen them on any GPS I own or have owned, which is quite a few.
