heard it for years, stay away from amazon, rock auto, the internet.

I just got a previously returned usb c to ethernet adapter from amazon, has an oLPN stuck on it over the original UPC. Doesn't make it counterfeit, though

This is based upon personal experience. A coworker purchased a USB-to-TTL serial adapter based upon the FTDI FL232R controller four or five years ago. The counterfeit parts used one of a dozen serial numbers, while genuine parts all had different serial numbers. I checked the serial number of the device and it had one of the counterfeit serial numbers. Amazon's solution to the sale of counterfeit goods was to put in the small print of the description a note that the controller was not "genuine". I don't think it is ethical to sell counterfeit goods even if you acknowledge that they are counterfeit.

It's not a question of being afraid, it's a question of being ethical.

If you're interested in "ethics", why would you buy anything at all from Amazon? I cancelled my prime membership years ago and haven't missed it. Now, I'm still practical in the end... last spring I wanted an iPad case that nobody else had in stock, so I got it from Amazon. But when there's a good alternative, I would rather give them my money instead of Amazon.

I don't purchase from Amazon. My post was about a device purchased by someone I worked with. I agree 100% that there are lots of reasons not to purchase from Amazon.

I have purchased several name branded SD cards on Amazon over the years. They all look authentic, but I guess I don't really know if any of them are counterfeit. So far none of them have failed except for one that I damaged myself by incorrect insertion in the slot.

I think this is blown out of proportion about AMZ. Obviously, anyplace one buys from can be selling fake, defective parts. The biggest warning comes about fake Thumb drives that will actually destroy your computer hardware. Those might be obtained anywhere, so be careful about those. One can't yet package the HW necessary to do that in an SD card.

Sorry, I really didn't mean my post as an attack on you, although now I see how it could be taken that way. Just wanted to make a point regarding Amazon's "ethics". But, like I said, in the end we all have to be practical and do what we need to to. I still use Amazon when there aren't other good alternatives, and can certainly understand why others use them too. It's just worth stepping back and looking at the big picture from time to time (and Labor Day isn't a bad time to do that).

I got hosed buying one of these on Walmart.com as well awhile back. So far the only place I haven't been hosed is B&H Photo but still good to check.

I have bought computer parts and memory cards from Amazon and always trusted that they were genuine. I did not know that there were issues from ordering from them. I guess that, going forward, I will forgo the convenience of online shopping and use brick-and-mortar stores, like Micro Center and Costco, to buy my computer needs.

I totally agree, and I learned this term this year, "echo chamber."

This started out as a dig against Micro Center, which was false, and now turned into a counterfeit thread.

I have not knowingly gotten counterfeit from amazon nor rock auto, but have in fact gotten returned items. I lived, because I got them replaced, the earth kept its orbit but it didn't stop warming.

Last week when a two pieces fell off of my 21 y.o. car (body colored door handle pieces), I could not find my 3M Emblem and Trim adhesive. Where did I look? Amazon and Walmart. Everybody had it for about $10, Walmart $5.97, so of course I went with Walmart online. It came the following day, I glued two pieces back on the vehicle, and the pieces are still there. If this were counterfeit, then I can't tell, the package said 3M. By not going bricks and mortar, I saved about $4. How do I know it's not counterfeit if I buy it in person? It doesn't come with a certificate of authenticity.

Not sure how long it's been in use now, but the free 128 gb Micro Center USB stick works fine.

I just pulled the cam videos from a flooded out road on the way to the gym today.

When I saw a Ford Bronco turn around, I decided to do the same. Saw smaller CR-Vs and Civic like vehicles plow through. Even if their engines don't end up hydro locked, I am more comfortable turning around.
