Well it's finally time ... (sussamb)

I joined this forum many years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the Garmin community here. I remember saying that I could never see myself ever doing without my Garmin, initially a Nuvi 1310, then a 1490 and now a Drivesmart, but the time has come with 2 cars in the family that have infotainment systems that run Google maps to put my Garmins out to pasture.

I hope in some small way I've contributed and helped many of you 'across the pond', and I still fondly remember the 2 years I lived in Washington DC and the wonderful people I met. For the time being I will remain a moderator on the official Garmin forum, but will no longer be contributing here. Best wishes to you all.

You will be . . .

You will be missed

sad

Thanks for all the help you have given me.. and us

The group is going to miss your advice. Sadly it's only a matter of time till the rest of us give in as well. Personally I will keep using a Garmin so long as they make/support them, permanently mounted on my dash, it's easy to see what's up ahead without looking down at my info screen.

Google maps/AA is fine for

Google maps/AA is fine for point-point routing, but is useless for custom routes. Not sure if custom routes are even available any more on google maps. What about areas with no reception...

There's still a use for garmin.

Thanks for everything!

I'd like to add my Thanks for all of your insights that you have shared with us over the years. You will be missed sad

We have never had a conversation. And yet, you have extended to me indirectly, a wealth of knowledge and know-how that is irreplaceable. I thank you for that, and extend my best wishes for your future endeavors.

Thank you, Sussamb!

Thank you, sussamb! I completely understand about Garmins being put out to pasture. Your posts will be missed here, but thanks for continuing on as moderator.

Out to Pasture

Put mine out to pasture a couple of years ago but religiously charge them the 1st of each month and keep them updated (maps and software). I don't know why but I am a little anal that way. Our in vehicle navigation does treat us well. Perhaps someday we will use our Garmins while walking or hiking, though, I think we can navigate with our iPhones smile

Thanks Jon...

It's been a pleasure learning from you here as well as the other forums I've known you from. I also remember how you came up with your username here as well as the other forums. Hope to see you around once in while!

Thank for your contributions

In a way like you I too have come to rely less on my Garmins due to retiring from transporting fuel. Garmins are great for remembering how to enter an address/property rather than just the address but Google maps are so easy to use. Sadly I too find it just isn't practical to have a mount and Garmin in vehicle because it just gives thieves one more reason to break in. I guess this is progress.

We'll miss you

Well, I understand the why. But, I'll continue to use my DS76.

I'll be 80 this month and I really enjoy the larger screen compared to my smartphone. Also, Google Maps (GM) does not have all the POIs that I want. When we go to Atlantic City GM wants us to go up I-95 which is the most heavily traveled interstate on the East Coast with lots of "White Knuckle" driving. We prefer to go across the Hampton Roads Bay Bridge Tunnel. From there we go up US13 to US113 and up US113 to Delaware 1. We do get on I95/I295 for a short time to get across the Delaware Memorial Bridge and then take US40 to NJ54 to the Atlantic City Expressway. I created 2 "Routes", 1 for for going up and 1 for coming back.

Yeah, we have to pay some tolls and it takes a little longer, but we can make as many stops as we need/want to use the restroom or get snacks. BTW - I know where every WAWA is along the way.

Also, the speed limit decrease alerts and the Red Light camera alerts are helpful.

Hate To Say Goodbye, So . . .

. . . perhaps "Until we see you again" sounds a bit less final.

Personally, I've just had my first vehicle w/ built in navigation and Android Auto / CarPlay capabilities almost a year, during which time I've used a side by side combination of my Garmin and one other nav aid, concluding the Garmin will easily continue as primary for a long time yet to come.

Good Luck

And Thank You

same here. I just use it

same here. I just use it for miles and eta. I just returned from a trip today. The nuvi failed with rural roads although the device knew the roads. Since they conflicted I chose to trust google maps and it was the best route. Nuvi wanted me to get off the SR at just about every turn.

sussamb's Retirement!

Sussamb, Thank you so much for all your insight to these GOS thingyies we've all fooled & fiddled around with for the past ilumteen years.

I've learned a lot from your posts.

Perhaps, when you have time in the future, you'll return and poke fun and laugh at us here that haven't a clue how to abuse a smart phone let alone an infotainment system in our nude fangled cars.

I haven't bought a new Garmin in three years. Not much new & exciting to interest me. I will continue to use my supply of older models though for as long as they last.

It's time

Several of my vehicles have Factory Nav systems, but I stil rely on the good ole' Portable Garmin.

You really can't manipulate and customize the Factory units like you can the portable units.

Custom POI's and other alerts just don't seem possible.

Not to mention the Lifetime maps that many of the portable units offer.

Last Time I updated my factory units, it was over $100.

Agreed

The nav updates for my new Buick cost $450 !!

OMG !!!!! I'd most definitely just use & update my portable Garmin.

For that price, you can by two new portable Garmin units with lifetime maps !

Yeah, the service manager at my dealer said candidly that they don't do very many on the new Buicks.

The same dealer still charges $100 to do a map update on my 2022 GMC pickup.

Not sure the reason for the big price difference except the Buick is considered by some to be a "luxury" vehicle.

My 3597s are still primary for inputting a long distance route which GM doesn't accomplish.
