Too Long

Seems to me that having very long periods between map updates is discouraging to their customers.

I predict 12/24/2023.

I would bet that most people (not us) do not even update the device once as long as they own it. I know of quite a few who "can't be bothered" downloading and using Express, they are perfectly happy with the device the way they bought it.

I would love to see Garmin's statistics on the number of units sold versus the number of map update downloads.

I think..

Those that actively use their Garmin likely update as often as they can. But, I think it's becoming a dwindling market. Google or Apple or Waze maps on CarPlay do a pretty decent job. I use my Garmin to direct me to new addresses (as a volunteer driver for seniors www.drivehappiness.ca) but if my Garmin can't find it.. a good chance the alternatives can.

I don't think that's it The Pnd market is still pretty sizable infact now garmin is seeing the RV as growing market. I think 2023 lack of maps was because the last few maps had many errors and it took time to correct the errors, but time will tell.

You might be surprised…

I have a lot of friends that ask me about updating their GPS devices (Garmin & TomTom) that have gone unused for a few years. With apps on cell phones, many people are getting hit by data plans, lack of signal, etc. I have friends vacationing at the moment in New Mexico. They borrowed my “backup” Garmin because there are so many areas where they lack good cellular signal.

The vast majority don't use Garmin anymore..

I think less updates a year maybe here to stay. I guess we'll see. I use a Dezl 770 for work and have a Nuvi 2558 but it sits on my computer desk rather than in my personal vehicle. If I'm in my car I use Google Maps. Garmin works for me because I can save a location and where the entrance is which may not be the actual address. I can use it again for next time this stop comes up on my route or add it quickly if I need to go there unexpectedly. In my personal car it's usually finding a one off place where Google is much better at showing everything nearby and it's updated much more often. When I retire both my Garmin(s) will probably be dust collecting paper weights.

Garmin vs Google

I'm a fan of Google maps but not so much of Google navigation. For that reason, I continue to use my Garmin devices in my vehicles and keep them up to date. My newest car (a 2017) even has Android Auto with Google navigation and I still prefer my DriveLuxe 51 with Smartphone Link and keep it permanently mounted and plugged in.

If Garmin had not discontinued their Viago app (remember that?) and continued to improve it, I probably would have switched to smartphone navigation. But as it stands now, I'll keep using my dedicated Garmin devices.

He doesn’t have a clue as to how to update his Garmin’s and he has two. I have asked him about updating them and he just shrugs it off.

I Had No Clue

KenSny wrote:

It's been 60 years since I was a college kid. I worked a full-time job while I went to school full-time. Who knew? Partying was not an endeavor in which I participated.

PND

PND was a pretty common term in the early forum days, so I guess knowing what it is dates me. Just put PND in the POI Factory search bar and see how many hits you get smile

Perhaps that's true. I didn't check that. I did check duckduckgo (a search engine) and found what I did display.

The "it's obvious to me, it should be to everyone" view strikes me as a communications problem. I'm not sure how often I don't finish reading because I just don't feel like looking up something that I might not find and I might find uninteresting.

I think that the message board would be better if folks like me didn't have to look up things to learn e.g. that stinger, in lower case, which doesn't sound like a car, is a car. So,,, I honestly wish that we had fewer (what are to me) obscure references. And yes, asking "what is it?" in French was sarcasm.

yep

This thread is finally getting some much needed humor.....

waiting...

well

I predict......September-December, or next year this time.
And now my crystal ball has shattered for no apparent reason. Maybe the stress of looking a year into the future somehow was too much strain.

Maybe we should all carry a crayon or chalk and write on walls and buildings for the passersby to see: "Garmin update". Maybe it will make the TV news. It could start a revolution of sorts.

Ok, this post is good, no big words to look up.

WAZE

Have they fixed WAZE to where it isn't a battery hog? The few times I've tried it, it drained my iPhone battery like nobody's business.

Waze

I can only run Waze when my phone is plugged in. It burns through the battery in short order and the phone is relatively new.

Waze vs. Garmin vs. Rand McNally GPS Updates

Waze works great on my Galaxy S21 but drains the battery if used for more than an hour.
The best part about Waze in my motorhome is it informs me of police so I can prepare for traffic slow downs even if we are traveling at the speed limit.

Waze map updates are the best as they are community driven.
Both of my RND 7720 and TND 720 allows me to send speed changes and road updates while driving to assist Rand McNally in updating their maps.
The convoluted way to sending road updates TO Garmin, through an email, is just outdated and does not use the customers who are actually driving every road out there in real-time.

Yahbut, you can go to the

Yahbut, you can go to the Here Webpage and make corrections. Garmin uses Here.

I feel the same way. Neither of my two cars have onboard gps nor do I anticipate getting a new car anytime soon, so once Garmin decides that enough is enough in the automobile market, and that may come sooner rather than later, I'll miss all the new functions that come out periodically from Garmin.

The one time I had to use

The one time I had to use google navigation was in the financial area of San Francisco. The height of buildings blocked access to Satellites, and route became ‘lost’. By the time wife put in the info on her phone, reception returned on Garmin. I was 5 blocks off route

Using Google Maps in mountain roads of Western North Carolina always results in unusual routes.

Magic Earth

I personally use Magic Earth which is a free app for IOS. It's got the same features as Waze but will work without internet. Great for those mountain trips. I am personally putting in about 100-150 places a day in North Carolina by editing the maps using Openstreet Maps. Give it a try. Bet you'll be surprised. Still got my Garmin and use it occasionally. And Magic Earth don't track you like Google and Waze does.

Soon?

Some holiday travel upcoming. New maps would help.

I need it!

I have a number of long road trips coming up starting in early June, sure hope we have a refresh soon.

This is a great example of what I often say.

For those that post the question:

Should I use Garmin or Google Maps?

The answer is C: Use BOTH!

Particularly on trips in unfamiliar areas.

If/when they agree with one another, great!

When they don't, find out why and plan accordingly!

Makes sense

Tried that once

Became more confused. I had to rent a car in SC due to a collision on mine. It had GPS. I had my GPS and waze. Ran all 3 to compare. Due to issues of date of maps (car was outdated by 2 years), route numbers vs road names, etc I got really messed up. I had to stop and look at all of them. Finally had enough and used my GPS. Waze only gets used for quick trips to spots not in my GPS.

I have tried using the nav (which I only have because it comes with other options I want) and both times, on my Rav4 and now my Highlander, it lead me astray and I had to revert to my trusty Garmin. Built in nav systems need to go. They can only be updated once a year at about $150. per. I got my used 3597 with lifetime updates for $150. Why would I opt to update the nav? Oh, yes, the updates can be had on eBay for about 1/2 that if you can find the latest one.

Map Update

I just had to pay 100 to update factory Nav in my car after 5 years

What version gets loaded?

When I ask Siri (via CarPlay) to load Google Maps or Apple Maps does it not load the version that I have on my iPhone.. and, would that not be the latest version??
