Stinky Locations - Project Discussion

I got a really funny file that came through yesterday and I sat there staring at it for a few minutes trying to decide what to do with it. Jon and I talked about it and he suggested that we make a special file that the location could fit into.

So if you have ever driven around with your window open and have had to quickly close them so that the smell coming from the outside didn't melt your nose then we have a solution for you.

tomb993 submitted a location for stinky cows at Harris Ranch on 1-5 in central California. I would like to make a file for stinky locations, these can be from cows, to factories, to water features. Whatever causes you to frantically roll up that window. I hope that someone will post the location for what I have called Tacoma Aroma in the Tacoma Washington area.

I am going to publicly beg rhythmtip to make a sound file to go with this that sais "quick roll up your window, approaching stinky air zone" Please, Please, Please.

someone may actually be able to find an icon that would go well also, maybe someone holding their nose;) Bobkz can I count on you to find that one?

Let's see how big we can make this file.
Go ahead and post locations in this thread.

Needs a good sound to go with it...

(No, not THAT!) rolleyes I was thinking perhaps the "Red Alert" siren from Star Trek. Something that will make you act quick to roll up the windows and set the AC to "recirc".

Stinky news

Greetings all,

After leaving my birth state of Wisconsin back in 1973, I've returned permanently to the state. Given its paper pulp mills and all the dairy farms with cows near roadways, I suddenly found an interest in the POI Factory's Stink Alert File cool and have taken over the file maintenance from TXRVer who already maintains so many other POI files, bless his soul. And for some reason, I doubt that any new Garmin or other manufacturer's GPS device will be shipped with built-in stink alerts so we're dependant on the POI Factory for such a critical file. If you have any new stink alert locations to add, please post them here or contact me as the file Maintainer.

Smells

Whatever the smell may be, it is what makes money for someone !!!

This reminds me of a plumber friends saying and it is cleaned up for posting here:

Your poop is my bread and butter !

I use this file on every one of my GPS’s

I live in an area that has a lot of stinky locations and have contributed a few to the file, but there is one about 50 miles away that I drive by every 3 or 4 months. And, if I don’t have the GPS in the car, I’ll forget about it. It doesn’t take long for me to hit the recirculate button on the A/C. However, if I have the GPS in the car, I am warned about a half mile before I get there and as a result, everything is already set and no foul smell. Great file in my opinion!

Here's another for the list. It's the Keystone Landfill adjacent to Business Route 6 in Dunmore PA. The smell is so bad it curls my nose hairs and curdles the cream in my coffee mug.

The line should look like this:

-75.5763, 41.4303, LANDFILL, RT 6 Business, DUNMORE, PA, USA

Wow Craig! Whatever possessed you to move from God's country (AZ) back east with us mere mortals?? I hope it wasn't forced by something unpleasant.

Several reasons but primarily the thought that I'm now at the age where it'd be good to be closer to Family. And as I had to explain to so many of my new neighbors, my move from AZ to WI in October wasn't as odd as it seems since I left Flagstaff at 7000 feet elevation so I owned and used snow shovels and a snowblower for my 22+ years in AZ. This was a bad winter for them so I'm glad to be a renter in WI now and never have to shovel again. I have 25 years of experience as a cheesehead prior to returning so the snow and rain weren't unexpected but I confess that I had forgotten that at times, it can be a week or more of overcast before seeing blue skies.

I'm flying into Phoenix Tues. and driving up to Page. I'll give Flagstaff your regards as I pass through. In any case, best of luck in your new digs.

One word ...

... Trona. As in, Trona California. Situated in the middle of nowhere, it's been described as smelling like rotten eggs, or one big giant fart. On top of that it averages over 100 degrees F in the summer. Luckily I haven't been there in many years, but each time I have had the displeasure to pass through that hellhole I couldn't wait get out. You have been warned.

Phew

There's a stretch along I-80 or I-78/76 in PA that goes through a gigantic dairy farm operation and you can smell it for miles and miles. I wish I knew the exact location to add to this file. I always pull the cabin air in recycle mode when I approached. It took my breath away.

I'm sure I'll recall others now that I think about it.
