Stinky Locations - Project Discussion

I got a really funny file that came through yesterday and I sat there staring at it for a few minutes trying to decide what to do with it. Jon and I talked about it and he suggested that we make a special file that the location could fit into.

So if you have ever driven around with your window open and have had to quickly close them so that the smell coming from the outside didn't melt your nose then we have a solution for you.

tomb993 submitted a location for stinky cows at Harris Ranch on 1-5 in central California. I would like to make a file for stinky locations, these can be from cows, to factories, to water features. Whatever causes you to frantically roll up that window. I hope that someone will post the location for what I have called Tacoma Aroma in the Tacoma Washington area.

I am going to publicly beg rhythmtip to make a sound file to go with this that sais "quick roll up your window, approaching stinky air zone" Please, Please, Please.

someone may actually be able to find an icon that would go well also, maybe someone holding their nose;) Bobkz can I count on you to find that one?

Let's see how big we can make this file.
Go ahead and post locations in this thread.

Now that is funny!

Route 13 somewhere in Delaware it smells to the high heavens.....Must be a chicken slaughter house nearby.... I will pinpoint the area when I take my daughter back to school in D.C.....ugh roll up the windows and recirculate the air!

There is another location on the Jersey Turnpike where all of the factories are...ugh.... Once again I will dial in the location on my next journey south.

Miss POI, I will gladly make an alert for the file.

Stinky Locations

Driving East on I-70, just East of the Blanchette Bridge, coming from St. Charles County, Mo. into St. Louis County, Mo., early in the morning, you would think the whole St. Louis County sewer system had backed up.
I gave the address of the closest building to I-70.

Just outside of Smithfield NC, on Hwy 301, there is a hot dog factory that issues some really bad smells when the dogs are being made. Also, on I35W, in Fort Worth, there is the Miller Brewery that can really make you hold your breath!

Not doing anything worth a darn.

Here in Jersey

At mile marker #1 on Route 129 in Trenton there are back to back sewer plants. This is at the termination of Route 129 and the beginning of Route 195. I will try and get the exact coordinates.

Radius

I can think of a few south of DC of the top of my head. The problem I see is the alert radius. It would have to be pretty large.

I assume you don't want the skunk I passed yesterday, though though those are probably the worst.

Unless, of course you're in NJ. Where is the center of New Jersey, and how big would the alert radius have to be to cover it?

I-70 and the Purina dog food plant in Denver

The paper mill on I-5 in Albany, Oregon and I-70 and the Purina dog food plant in Denver, are two of the most repugnant areas I can think of.

You think dog food smells bad coming out of the dog.

I drove through that area just after going to dinner in Brunswick. Not sure if it was the food or the odor, but I had to pull over and throw up on the side of I-95 it was so rank.

Icon idea

I saw a "tissue butler" on this site:
http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Tissue_Butler/

If someone knows how to crop and save it, it might be a cute icon. It's butler holding his nose with one hand and holding the tp in the other hand (hence the reason to edit the picture).

Re: A fun new POI Factory file....

Hi Miss POI,

I've created an .mp3 to go along with the "stink-alert.csv" It says "Oh my gawd...quick roll up the windows, approaching stinky air zone".

Unfortunately, I don't know how to upload it to the site. Could you tell me how?

update.

Just wanted to update everyone on this project. Tailspin added another bmp icon and sound alert to the file and I was able to import the locations that Rhythmtip geocoded for me into the database. I have added rhythmtip as a maintainer of the file and he has the access to make additions and changes.

Miss Poi

I've been to so many places

Well I frequently work in some really stinky locations. I once ask a guy why he was willing to work there and he said "Well when you fart, no one can smell it"! Do you mark the place where the stink is generated from or the hundreds of roads that will be affected? I guess it alo depends on wind direction!

Been there

Re: A fun new POI Factory file...

Hi Miss POI,

Some people may disagree on the "level" of stink, at these three locations. Nevertheless, here they are:

1. The White House
38.89861, -77.03626

2. The Senate
38.91113, -77.01762

3. The House of Representatives

Hershey's on Chocolate Ave. The streetlights are in the shape of Hershey kisses. They alternate between 'wrapped in foil' silver and 'unwrapped' brown.

Drive along the street and you smell CHOCOLATE!.

The coord's are: 40.28750, -76.64530

BTW, the nurseries sell crushed cocoa shells instead of typical cedar mulch. When you water them, your yard smells like a chocolate store.

One of the smelliest places I know is the interior of my friend's car when we're sitting in the front seat and his 160 pound Mastiff is in the back. Especially when the dog is lying on the seat asleep.

Paper Mills

I think paper mills would be one of the best places to create POI's for. You can smell them for miles.
Every time I pass one and have others in the car with me, we all look at each other to try and figure out if it is the paper mill or some old beans.

that's because

there are a lot of smelly places in that area if it where I'm thinking of and depending on which road you take you get hit and since the GPS doesn't alert unless on route I added some extra ones. What were the coordinates not added?

I dont remember!

at this point I cannot tell you... maybe in the future you can give the state and or town with the coordinates...it would make my job a little easier!

International Paper cardboard plant.

Creates 1/4 of the worlds cardboard. Very sulphuric "rotten egg" smell that, depending on the wind, can travel for 100 miles.

Joemac, if you want that location listed in the "stink alert" file, you will have to get the coordinates and post them in this thread....thanks
