Issue.... One of 2 2689's fails map update repeatedly

Though latest map says it is loaded... I fear it has something to do with FourSquare, as when I go to mymaps... It shows the latest Map but no FourSquare....

and flashes something, maybe a chkdsk request?

Suggestions....?

I have tried 3 separate SD cards, and checked 2 in another system and they are OK...
Also tried restarting computer.... but that's not it either

Wife's 2689 updated fine, it's my 2689 that acting up...

Yuck!!

A 2689LMT in both our cars that we love...

So I attempted a chkdsk H:

So I attempted a chkdsk H: /F and same for SD card...
had to override H (GPS) but it didn't scream foul...

Then tried 7th map reinstall on 3rd card... Still fail...

MyMap says 2022.1 map is loaded, but NOT FourSquare...

So I took it to car, booted it and 2022.1 map does display, and routes to destinations, but no FourSquare was downloaded.... and no data is found.... when opened or searched for....
But I do believe that the latest map is being used successfully... just not FourSquare...

Wondering... Can I delete the downloaded map files (Windows) and therfore force another download from Garmin to my computer...??

Now I do have 2x 2689's... and wife's was downloaded first and did display both map and FourSquare....

Any other suggestions?

Yes, you could clean up the map files on your computer and force a full download again. Other things you could try would be to clone to a SD card. Or you could compare the contents of your wife's device to yours to see what files are missing. I don't know if Foursquare files have unlock codes like some of the other map files do {.gma and .unl files). If they don't, you should just be able to copy any missing files over from your wife's device, then do a cold boot to see if the files are recognized.

Perhaps

Perhaps your SD did not have enough free space to install the Foursquare stuff. I had a problem with mine, I took the SD from my spare (that had never been used) when I installed the new map. Subsequently I bought a new (bigger)SD and decided to use it on my main GPS and return the smaller to my spare.

So, when I connected my main it wanted to do an update, previously it had been updated but with a different SD.. makes sense. But when I went to update my spare (now with a SD that has the update on it) my only option was to install a limited map. Not what I wanted so took out my SD and did a default (PC) format. Started the update again and all went as expected.

All this to say that the update process seems to check how much space is available and installs what there is room for.

Thanks for

Thanks for suggestions...

The SD Card(s) used were all 16GB Units (14.3GB free)That should have been big enough!! ??

First, I checked %programdata%garmincoreservicedownloadsmap
and removed the 2022.1 map....
Then, On SD Card, I deleted Maps in Garmin Directory...
Then Ran GE....
and Re-loaded maps... Forcing a new Download....

It Failed, saying it encountered an error, but, Also Said I was Up to Date!!! YES!!! It showed BOTH Results!!!

Removed 2689 from computer, and rebooted sans Receiver, and Yes, FourSquare was not seen, but current maps were....

Next Idea... On 2689, can someone tell me the location and filename of the Saved Places? I'm thinking next thing to do is copy that file off and doing a Master Reset.... 660 had one, but Haven't found button on 2689 yet... So could you tell me where that is too?

SUCCESS!!!!

Your comments about comparing two identical units gave this information....
Wife's 2689 on Windows shows One unit, with two drives.... The SD Card is shown "Within" the 2689.... THIS WORKS!!
My 2689 on Windows shows the 2 devices: Garmin 2689 and SD Card -- 660 style: Two separate physical Drives being seen.... No connection of one to another like on my wife's 2689, AND THIS DID NOT WORK!!
Wondering if it's the link between the two drives that's the cause???
So... Removed the SD card and Re-downloading maps just to Garmin, USA & Canada only....

Time will tell... I'll be editing this post in either case!

EDIT!!! THAT WAS IT!!!
It has something to do with the linkage between the SD Card and the 2689....
Again... On wife's 2689, in Windows, You see the SD Card as A DRIVE Within the 2689....
On my 2689, it shows up as does my old Nuvi 660: As 2 separate drives!!! The "LINK" between the SD Card and the Garmin is not fully connected....

Download of maps to SD card did occur.... but the link to FourSquare Did Not "Make", and apparently that is what tripped the Failure notice in the download of maps....

By removing the SD Card, there was no link to fully connect to... and that forced me to download US & Canada Maps to GARMIN, NOT SD CARD!!! And that works!! WORKS FINE: Both MAP and FourSquare are now seen as being updated!!!

For now I'm leaving it alone.... but would be interested in any other comments....

Just returned from a short drive... ALL IS WORKING.... (Just not with an SD Card!!) smile!
This is the first time I have attempted to use an SD Card in my 2689... The proper link between the two may have been broken for a long time.....

some answers to your Q's

I successfully updated my 2689, both the map and Four Square and for a 1st time, it used the SD card which like yours now has 11.3 GB of free space.

As far as favorites, I would use the utility within GE to force a backup, although one may have been done as part of the update process.

As far as a "master" reset, the procedure below might work, although it doesn't specifically show the 2689. Good luck and keep us posted!

To perform a master reset on a nuvi 2509, 2609, 2709, 3400, 3500, and 3700 series, and dezl series:

Start with the device turned off and unplugged from power

To verify the device is powered off and not in standby mode, press and hold down the power button until prompted to turn off the device

Power on the device

When the first copyright screen appears press and hold the lower right hand corner of the display portion of the touchscreen

Remove your finger from the touchscreen when "Erase all user data?" appears

Touch Yes

If text language is not in English, this is the button on the right

The device will now be reset. Follow the on-screen prompts then place the device in an area with a clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites.

Although the master reset will erase all saved favorites, any loaded custom points of interest will remain intact on the device.

Also, in Garmin Express, you can go to the device's Tools/Utilities and save/restore Favorites without having to tinker with files.

A quick trip using my 2689

A quick trip using my 2689 using Map and FourSquare reveals things are in fact operational....

My next approach.... (Assuming that I cannot find a way to re-link the SD Card within the 2689)..... Is to remove other languages and documents to increase the amount of free space within the 2689... So that larger maps in the future may fit inside 2689....

We all used to do this with the Nuvi 660 to prolong using partial maps on it, prior to using SD Card....

Before starting in, I though I'd post my idea, and see if anyone has done this, so I'd have a bit of history on this....

I'm assuming Languages, voices, and Help files will be the biggest, and vehicles and pictures/ pdf's will be smaller gains....

Any others?
