650 update

Steve R. wrote:

Any thoughts on how to get both Canada and the US installed on a Nuvi 650, assuming that the map update has not gotten too large?

This has come up before and as I remember, you need to have Garmin Express install the map update to the device and computer, with the GPS device getting the largest possible segment of North America installed. Then by using the computer's map and the MapInstall program, install the rest of North America (or less since the file size must be under 2GB) to the SD card.

If the rest of North America or USA/Canada is over 2GB, then you'll have to settle for an incomplete map leaving out the least likely areas you'd ever need to use. One potential way to increase the size of the map installed directly to the GPS device which may maximize the amount of USA/Canada between the nuvi and card is to follow the Garmin FAQ here at The Factory offering a list of the files that can be deleted from the nuvi to create more free space.

Good luck.

Garmin Express offered the US & Canada East and the Lower 49 States SW. That leaves out western Canada and Alaska.

Garman Express offered strange options, probably due to size issues. For the SD card, Garmin offered a "west" and "east" option that should cover everything. But then for the Nuvi 650 itself, Garmin did not offer a "west" or "east" option. But did offer the "lower 49 States SW". So I am missing western Canada and Alaska.

You are correct, this issue came-up previously. After, the last time, I updated the maps, I did briefly explore MapInstall, but ran into some "authentication" issues. I didn't really pursue it since we were taking some (immediate) trips. Now we don't have any immediate trips planned and we also have a new car with an in-dash tom-tom unit (that I don't really trust) but gives me some room to explore how to use MapInstall.

PS: Updating the maps to the SD card is very fast. The Nuvi itself, slow.

True for SD card sizes. The 2GB warning comes from Steve R.'s nuvi 650 being one of the models that can not read files over 2GB in size:

650

Good thing I looked up Garmin 650 before I opened my yap to suggest a newer GPS. Those things are crazy expensive.

Having said that, am I wrong but could SteveR not use 2-3 different SD cards to load N.A in 2-3 different sections 2020.20.
Then when the need arises just swap to another SD card with the required section???

I thought my Zumo 550 was expensive new, it was around $700 at the time IIRC.

I seem to remember having a unit that once the SD card was removed it wouldn't work anymore if you reinserted it, might have been a Streetpilot 330c, all I know is ever since I've never removed a card in any on my subsequent units.

Good thought. Garmin did offer, for the SD cards, a "west" and "east" download option. So two cards should work. Additionally, over time, I have accumulated a couple of spare SD cards.

2020.20 Map Update

:.(

I just tried to D/L (install) on my 3590 and keep getting an error message that says: "There was an error installing the update."

I did install the latest GE prior to trying. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling GE.

Any Ideas?

Thanks !

Try

Thanks sussamb.

None of that worked for me.

I am trying to load it form a work computer, so I'll try my home laptop later.

But when I chose to load the maps to the "computer only", it seemed to succeed.

In any event, I'll report back on my attempt of loading the maps from home.

Thanks again.

Well ...

Work computers often give issues, you never know what restrictions have been set.

You said you turned it off, was that a sleep off, or did you do a hard shut down by holding the off switch until the OFF option popped up? Also, you can do a hard reset. The instructions for your unit can be found in the FAQs.

17 Hours, Wow

Went to do the update on my two units this morning. The first one took just over an hour {unit and computer} but when I went to update a second it told me 17 hours 40 min for the update. Tried to update the maps through Basecamp/Map Install but no luck.

I must be special

I upgraded my Drivesmart 51 with no hitch and then was hit with a brilliant idea and see if my 1450 could be upgraded. It had been sitting idle for over 2 years.
After 1.3 hours it came through. It showed 2019.20.
Today I went to BASECAMP and it showed I had 2019.30 as my map. GREAT

.

Finally

2019.20?

Did you mean 2020.20? 2019.20 is a year old. Maybe I misunderstood the point of your post.

updating now

was going to wait until later next week--don't like to update right before a trip
However, the zumo went wonky yesterday morning. Its almanac was off and it thought that sunrise was at 8am and sunset at 6p instead of 6:30a sunrise and 8:30p sunset. Thursday, it was fine but it was in night mode for fridays drive to work until i overrode it.

I've been successfully using GE at least for the last 5 years.

I've noticed that most problems in the past were user and/or user equipment generated......

Nuvi 50 on a SD card

Updated with a couple of snags. My PC only had 3 gig of free storage. Garmin said I needed 5. Switched to the wife's PC, no problem. SD card had 20 gig free, so I don't get it.

It needs to cache the files to local storage, i.e. the computer drive. SD cards don't count.
