crazing what companies are adding

Good Update

No problems, went fast. Noticed new maps show local highway has now been dualized. A major multi-year construction job that was completed this past summer.

Doesn't matter

Doesn't matter when you update the map. 99.9% of us will never notice a change in the map anyways. I just update just so I can keep my lifetime map updates.

@ robertc5377

Download Garmin Express software from:

https://www.garmin.com/en-US/software/express

Once the software is installed on your computer, attach your GPS to the PC and run Garmin Express. The software will guide you through the download and installation of the map update.

Garmin Express?

It depends on your device model and features, but for most Garmin On The Road devices, you install the Garmin Express software on a computer, then connect the Garmin device to the computer and run Garmin Express.

It would help if you tell us what Garmin device you have.

Note that most devices come with lifetime map updates but that Garmin states that one of the requirements is that after being registered with Garmin, that a map updates are performed every 24 months or less. Going beyond 24 months without an update may lose the device's ability to obtain future updates.

Good luck and welcome to The Factory.

Actually it's not about the excitement of a new map release. It's because...

1. This forum is usually dead with very few active threads and
2. We're forced to make a post every week to allow us to download the Speed and Redlight camera files.

That is being brutally honest...and you are right!

Thanks!

how about gas hot water heaters with wifi? A couple stupid issues. One, with these models, you lose power, you have no hot water. Conventional wisdom says with gas, you have hot water and a stove, even with no power. Two, what benefit do you really get by putting your hot water heater on wifi? That criminals can hack it?

Wi-Fi Updates Can Be Useful

I find it convenient to update my GPS powered by my truck while in my driveway. I don’t need to disconnect it. I just leave the truck in accessory mode.

All OK

We had to buy a new hot water heater several months ago. It has WiFi.
That being said I, loving everything electronic, saw no reason for WiFi. I did not set it up.

We went on a two week vacation and set the unit for vacation. Our kids were at the house and needed hot water. I wondered if they knew how to reset the water heater. After we were back home I asked them if they were able to set the water heater off vacation. They said that it was not on vacation and they had plenty of hot water.
That being said, us thinking it was on vacation and it was not we could have checked it while on vacation to make sure we set it correctly. Also, coming home from the airport we always turn our thermostat back on so the house will be hot or cool. This is very helpful.
If we had really set the water heater for vacation, we could have also turned the unit off vacation while on our way home from the airport so we would have how water.
So there is a slight use for a hot water heater WiFi, but I still probably won't set it up.

O and we have electric not gas because I am a worry wart and did not want gas at our house.

I think a lot of it is generational. While older generations may see minimal value to adding Bluetooth or WIFI to the toaster, toothbrush, crock pot, or heater, those younger i.e millennials will eat it up and run to Best Buy to grab the latest gadget for the cool factor alone. That said, some of these things do provide convenience in today's hectic, fast pasted lifestyle allowing automation to lend a hand here and there.

I'm home 16-18 hours a day.

I'm home 16-18 hours a day. It' hard to justify the cost of wifi for appliances for maybe a 10 day vacation.

Old Nuvi 660

Well, here it is Nov 23 (black Friday) and MapUpdater still doesn't offer the 2019.30 maps. Because of the file size limitation of this older Nuvi, I relied on MapUpdater to easily let me install the East maps on the main Nuvi memory and the West maps on the SD card. It worked great.

It looks like Garmin has abandoned MapUpdater. crying

So, here's my question - how do I accomplish the same thing using Garmin Express?

GE shows that an update is available and when I click on "View Details" it further shows the update to be 2019.30 East. Under "Installation Options" it further shows that "Device Only" is selected by default. I left the SD card installed, but I assume GE will install the East map on the main Nuvi memory, not the SD card. I can change that to "Computer and Device" so that BaseCamp gets updated on my PC, but that brings up 2 more questions:

1. What will get installed on my PC for BaseCamp - just the East portion or will the whole North America map be installed?

2. How do I get the West portion installed on the SD card?

Using Map Install is a real pain since you have manually select different maps by clicking/dragging on the stupid map. It's too easy to either miss a map or duplicate a selection.

Just when you guys helped me get a procedure that worked for map update 2019.20 using MapUpdater, Garmin goes and breaks it. mad

Unfortunately ...

If MapUpdater isn't working for you you'll need to do it via Express and MapInstall

https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=WIFhf0pGvIAJUbK9WunKa7...

Express will install the full map to your PC though so it will be available to you.

Here's Garmin's FAQ:

To answer your questions, when choosing to install a map update to device and computer, the computer will receive all of North America (or if your device came with just the US or US/Canada, maybe you'll just get that) for use with BaseCamp. And sadly, MapInstall is the way you'll get the remainder of North America (or whatever you want as long as it's under 2GB) installed to the SD card.

If you haven't found this faq, it may be of interest for your update:

Worked Well

Worked well on our Thanksgiving journey. Always nice to have new maps even if we do know where we are going.

Yes

Yes... but too bad it's not 2020.10

Thanks For The Info Guys

Looks like I'm done updating my 660 unless Garmin changes MapUpdater to offer the new maps. Map Install is simply to imprecise for me to use.

Well ...

Not sure why you say that. MapInstall just needs you to zoom in so you can select exactly what you want. I do it quite a bit for the EU maps and find it relatively simple.

Attempted a POI Update

My wife went to a memorial service yesterday, guided by her trusty 3597 running the freshly updated map. Garmin took her to the wrong place by several miles. It turns out the church had moved on Palm Sunday 2012, so the Here place entry was just a bit out of date. She barely got to the church on time.

I have never before attempted a user-initiated place update, but found that HERE Map Creator had clear instructions for this case (a moved place). First I created a new place in the accurate location (verified from overhead photography in Google maps, as street addresses and names are a bit funky in the neighborhood), and filled in as much as I could find from the church website (phone number and website URL). Then I selected the old place item, and requested that it be deleted, giving the reason as "moved". If this actually works, I need to start trying to update various businesses and such which are often seriously out-of-date around here.

What I don't know is whether Here actually processes this type of user input, nor how long the update cycle is for an accepted update actually to arrive to our Garmin units in a map update. But I can go to mapcreator.here.com weekly, go to the small town in question, and search for the church by name to see whether the old, wrong, location is still there and whether my new location has appeared.

Thanks

Thanks for heads up. I have 3 to update
I swear I just updated in the summer..

I just updated my old 265W, hadn't since 2014

I use Oiltrax as well, and had to put it on the Garmin itself. Deleted the 1.65 gmapprom.img after backing it up of course, then copied Oiltrax img to the Garmin itself, and put the 2019 maps on the SD card as its way to big for this Garmin

My other units are all newer so they usually have no issue updating.

imho

I get that some people say they will never use a smartphone (not really sure why I think a while back it was that either they refuse to have a cell phone due to being reached, or, they refused to have a data plan--these two concerns have been removed by cell phone carriers in this day and age), but if a person's time is valuable, imho Google and Waze save tens of minutes if not an hour daily, for anyone living in a metro area. I really consider Garmin to be not that useful at this point for routing, but it can work for alerts, and that's about it...

The reason there are so many

The reason there are so many variations of cars, smart phones, wifi routers, spaghetti, houses, etc.... is because everyone has different opinions. Otherwise, the "best" would rise to the top and the rest would stop producing trash.
What is "best' for me is the most efficient, easiest to operate, most convenient, and best value. I love my 3597.

Thanks for letting me know.

Thanks for letting me know. Will update soon.

2019.30

I downloaded it but had to force it to load onto my SD card so I would have enough room to load the Large JCV file.

I also changed the battery in my 3590 and got an error code "No Data Found/Available".

When I started the unit again, it seemed to be OK.

On my 1390T, I just load the new map update and large JCV on my SD card. Works perfectly fine.

new streets

Always nice to see new streets on my Garmin. Next update should be around Feb-Mar, I'm thinking.
