new Garmin uSA for iOS update today

Just general bug fixes. I had read somewhere that Garmin was no longer supporting the app so I find this interesting

Good news

It's been a long time since it was refreshed.

The mapping is very outdated. The iOS app mapping used to track the Garmin GPS mapping, but that stopped a long time ago. The iOS mapping has been stuck at 2017.30 for a long, long time.

I had no idea they had an app

Can't imagine what the app would do better than waze or google maps. Advantage of garmin GPS is if don't want to use data on cell phone.

Imagine Harder

There is no comparison. I won't consider Waze or Google Maps, don't even have them on my iPhone.

The Garmin iOS app on the iPhone is a full-blown GPS on a smartphone. It has the functionality of my Montana and GPSMAP64S on the iPhone. So much so that I sold the Montana and only use the GPSMAP64S on the trail now.

Thanks for the info

Does it update the maps too?

Garmin USA vs Google navigation.

I agree with Diesel that Garmin navigation is superior to Google navigation in many ways. I have Android Auto with Google navigation and have tried to like it, but it just doesn't measure up IMO. So I have gone back to using my nuvi. I just wish Garmin would have an Android version of Garmin USA ... and even better, make it compatible with Apple Play and Android Auto.

Give It a look

I really like that I only carry one device now, the iPhone. No more having to grab the GPS too. My Garmin GPS functionality is now on the iPhone, and extremely well integrated at that. The mapping and database are resident, but the app can also use the cell system for weather reports. Very good integration. The Garmin app is often on sale for about $45, a bargain. Compare that to a nuvi.

I also came up with a car mount that works pretty good. I put Velcro on the back of the iPhone case and the matching strip (small) on my dashboard so I mount the iPhone in a highly visible and easy to reach location. Sticks on easily and rips right off, bada-BING!

Diesel ?

With the Garmin app on your IPhone how long does your battery last, or do you keep it plugged in while in the car?

Plugged in

Always plugged in when in the car.

I play with it on battery and never noticed an impact on the battery.

Waze and Google Maps both

Waze and Google Maps both will kill an iPhone in about 4 hours. It's not so much the mapping program as it it the GPS receiver and the display that are kept away. The display is the big killer.

If you go to your phone's battery app, you will see that the display is always the big draw.

No, maps were not updated.

Well that's disappointing. Thanks.

Can we be honest?

The anxiety and extreme interest over fresh maps is a bit over the top, no?

I mean, have you ever been inconvenienced by an error with the mapping?

In all my years of GPS'ing, I have come across two map anomalies, which were due to the maps trailing new construction.

Only time I had problems was

Only time I had problems was when construction was on going on the I73 extension from Greensboro, NC to Rockingham, NC, to replace the old US 220 south. 220 meandered and the I73 extension went straight. So there was a lot of "off road" and recalculating for about an hour.

It took several years for all the changes to get incorporated. It wasn't a problem, because it was impossible to get off and get lost.

Just finished talking to Garmin OEM group. They have discontinued development and support for this app. No more updates. They said app stopped working on latest IOS release. Works fine for me but not updated for 7 months. I'll continue using it for a while. I loved it for it's interface and functionality (traffic info was also pretty accurate). Shame they are leaving the app market. They recommended either switching to Navigon (they own the company) or Here (they use their maps). "

The iOS Garmin app is, or was, Garmin N. America.

Sad

That explains things.

Garmin has been gung-ho with the Navigon brand, that app has been getting more updates and refreshed maps lately than the Garmin N. America app. I guess I will try to migrate over to Navigon. Navigon was just so different than Garmin in look, feel and the experience.

The Garmin N. America app is not shown on the Garmin site anymore.

Garmin StreetPilot app

phranc wrote:

@phranc ... it is my understanding that Garmin USA and Garmin North America are just 2 different on-board map subscription add-on's for the same IOS application ... namely Garmin StreetPilot Online. I don't have an iPhone and no direct experience with this, so I am just going by what I have read in the forums, and I may be wrong about it.

In any case, whatever it is called, it is too bad that they discontinued it. They did the same thing with Viago a few years ago. Apparently Garmin does not want competition from their own company that will eat into sales of the automotive Drive series. I am sure the profit margin is much higher on the hardware than it is on the app.

Sort Of

The app is really called Garmin Street Pilot OnBoard, then has options on different geographical regions, such as North America (Canada, USA, and Mexico), USA (49 states), UK & Ireland, and Western Europe.

Doesn't really matter now, it's being obsoleted and replaced with NAVIGON.

Garmin Bought NAVIGON, the Competition

I would very much like that Garmin just shuts down NAVIGON. I just tried NAVIGON and I don't like it. It is awkward and weird. Does not have the user experience that is known as Garmin. Looks completely different. It is very different than the Garmin GPSr devices and user experience.

Updates

Interesting that the Garmin iOS app remains listed as available by Garmin, and the iTunes Store. It was just updated on March 12th.

About 2-3 years ago, an iOS update rendered the Garmin app useless until Garmin updated the app in a couple weeks. Then all was okay. I have not seen any problems with the app as others are reporting with recent iOS updates. I thought that developers received advance releases of pending iOS updates to prevent problems like that.

It is interesting...

That Garmin did a recent update of a product they are no longer fully supporting. Seems a little contradictory. i still really enjoy using the app.

Keep It Going

I'm going to keep using the Garmin StreetPilot N. America app until it doesn't work. It is still available per Garmin and on the Apple iTunes store. It does work fine, I have no problems with it. We shall see.

Over all, GPS has become a commodity, no longer a new shiny object or novelty. It is mainstream and just about a utility. That means low cost will determine who survives. Just about any feature has been introduced and derived. We shall see.

I checked with Garmin

I emailed Garmin and asked about the status of the Garmin StreePilot iOS apps. Here is the response:

"We haven't been informed of any plans for the app to be discontinued. It is certainly possible that it may not be supported at some point however. I have no way to provide future plans for the app unfortunately."

Great news, downloading

Great news, downloading again to give it another go. I had abandoned it a little while back in favor of Waze mostly and Garmin DriveSmart in my car. Thanks for the heads up.

To Add to What Phranc said

If you go to your phone's battery app, you will see that the display is always the big draw.

I have a USB power gizmo in my car, plugs into the power port. It has two USB ports. A 'regular' one and a high power port. When I am navigating with the iPhone plugged into the regular port, it might not keep the battery charge and I'll see a very slow drain on the batter. If I then plug into the high output port, it will charge the battery while running the nav app, always keeping the display lit.

That shows how much power the display consumes, and the GPS function. That's why there are options to automatically dim and turn off the screen.

garmin on ios 13

I just upgraded my iphone X to ios 13 and I had purchased garmin north america y western europe many years ago. The application works on IOS 13. The only issue is that the maps are from 2017. I try to use it a couple of weeks ago in spain but it was a pain do to road closure and new roads. Google maps save the day and since I was paying AT&T day pass with unlimited Internet access it did not cost me extra.

It is sad that Garmin have not updated its maps. The market exist for travelers that do not have internet service in the travel area. They could sell a mapping app that would work for 30 days for $9.95 and people will buy it. Hertz charges more than that per day if you rent a GPS from them

Wish Garmin back to business on phone

A+ Thanks

Removed

I ended up removing the Garmin app/maps I had purchased years ago due to space. I use Google or Apple Maps now with CarPlay as well as my dedicated GPS.
