Should you delete old Garmin maps???

Two part question.

Some time ago, Diesel told me that I could find the maps I d/l from Garmin to my Mac computer here:

HD:Users:MYNAME:Library:Caches:com.garmin.LifetimeMapUpdate

I found that they are also here:

HD:Users:MYNAME:Library:Application Support:Garmin:Maps

in LifetimeMapUpdate, there are numerous files AND the latest Garmin Map version that I just downloaded: City Navigator North America NT 2013.40.gmap

Under Support;Garmin; Maps are not only...
City Navigator North America NT 2013.40.gmap

...but also numerous old maps:
City Navigator North America NT 2012.30.gmap
2012.40.gmap
2013.10.gmap
2013.20.gmap
and 2013.30.gmap

Should one delete these older maps and just keep the City Navigator North America NT 2013.40.gmap file?

Many thanks.

It's a personal choice... I delete 'em. No need to waste the space.

Save the latest one

That way if there is a problem with the new update, you still have the old one to revert back to.

And what about the maps on the GPS unit?

That's what I suspected; i'll go ahead and do so. Thanks for replying.

What about the maps on the GPS itself?

When I go to my NUVI 3790 > Tools > Settings > myMaps I find these items all with check marks:

Cnn – Na – Dem
North America DEM

CN North America NT
2013.40 3D

CN North America NT 2012.30
Baltimore, Maryland, Arlington, Virginia, Washingt

CN North America NT
2013.40 ALL
trafficTrends North America 4.25

It looks like the old map is there, the CN North America NT 2012.30. Just leave them all checked???

Thanks again.

I keep two newest versions

On my pc, I always keep the two newest map versions. When I add a new one, I delete the oldest one. If I find that there is a problem with the new version, I've got a backup. Hasn't happened yet but I've got the spare disk space and it's such an easy thing to do.

Backups...

...the first rule of computing because you always know that one day you're gonna have a problem and need that backup.

I didn't..

but that's up to the user...

It's always good practice

It's always good practice and habit to back up before installing the newer version...for that just in case moment of problems.

I keep one backup

I've always believed that you should back up any data that you wouldn't want to lose. I usually don't delete the old versions unless my disk or backup is starting to get full, then I'll delete all but the last two versions to free up space. That way if something goes wrong with an update, I have an older version to revert to. That being said, I don't see a need to keep more than one previous version of the maps unless you have disk space to spare.

If ...

If you do like I do (and everyone should do), you have a monthly backup of your whole computer on another drive. If that's the case, you can delete all of the old Garmin files from your computer 'cause you have a copy of them in your backup.

LT Maps

Garmin makes the latest four maps available.

Just keep the Map Updater program

I only keep the latest two version of GarminMapUpdater.exe. It makes easy to get the old maps from Garmin in case of problem and the file size is much smaller than map.

I Dump Them

I remove them from my computer after updating. The North American maps take about 2.3GB each on the PC and I would rather not chew up the space and have to back it up.

They are better placed in the trash. You don't keep old copies of DOS hanging around do you?

Full backups

I keep copies of the last two full backups of my nuvi, maps and all, unless I know of a problem (mainly from factory users) with one of the releases (maps or updates).
