3D images (buildings and landmarks) were introduced on the 7x5 series in 2008. The 7x5's have always had the gmap3d.img file, however they do not have the gmapdem.img file.

That being explained I never payed attention to that before.
I have images of my wifes 2598lmt since i bought it. The original one does not contain a 3d image file or anything else related to 3d.

PC Config Seems OK...

Thanks for your help!

Your computer should be more than capable of handling the install. There doesn't seem anything out of the ordinary with that configuration that could be of issue. Using MapUpdater is just an alternate method to installing CNNANT201910 besides Garmin Express--in case there's an issue with GE on that PC. Running MU resulting in repeated crashes is not a good sign for that PC environment. I'm able to run MU on both a Win10x64 laptop and a Win7x64 desktop without any problem. Could the anti-virus application(s) and/or firewall(s) on that computer be affecting the install process? Could the UAC on that computer be affecting MU and GE from running properly? It shouldn't be an issue though, but try running MU and/or GE as administrator, and see if that makes any difference.

If you're technically capable and comfortable wading through the Garmin logs, you might be able to spot possible anomalies with GE's operation. The logs of interest are located in:

C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\Logs\Express\
C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\Logs\CoreService\
C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\Logs\CoreService\Detailed\

There's not much else I could suggest for now. Maybe someone else could spot something and/or have some other ideas/suggestions...

3D

If I recall, the 7x5 and 34xx/35xx nuvi models had the gmap3d.img file. Maybe there were a few others ... not sure. Hopefully other members will let us know if there are other model groups that support the 3D images. I found this Garmin support page that describes 3D images, but unfortunately it does not list the models that support it: https://support.garmin.com/faqSearch/en-GB/faq/content/2Bqln...

I don't have any backups of my old 765T here, would like to see if that one had it also. You would think if these old units have it the newer ones could at least use the file even if it did not come with it. I think Rob (Juggernaught) still has his 775T. That machine has all the files the 765T had plus euro maps.

Thrak, assuming you install all of North America as the update, you must be using SD cards for the map.

Do you need to delete the old map on your SD cards or does the update process delete the old map when updating to the new map? What size SD card are you using.

I ask this because my nuvi 750 with a 4GB SD card will not do the update unless I first delete the contents of the SD card (the previous map file) while others with various Garmin devices and SD card sizes report that the update proceeds without having to delete the old SD card files and am trying to finds out if other nuvi 7x0 owners need to delete their old SD files to update the map.

Thanks in advance.

Other 7x0 owners, feel free to add your findings.

SDCard size

My 1390 updated fine without first erasing the SDCard. Might be the size of the card, I've got an 8 GB -- if the process downloads the new map before deleting the old, it may need enough memory space for two maps.

According to your profile you have a Streetpilot C550. Is that the device you're trying to update?

Thanks for the heads up. Have to mention... For years I have never been able to get Garmin updates to work using their Garmin Express software. Have always used the Updater program and it has always donwe well. This time, I couldn't find the updater program, so I had to resort to using the Express software. I was not a happy camper, was expecting another failed attempt. But this time using Express the download was very quick and smooth! I hope this wasn't a fluke. I hope Garmin paid attention to all the Express complaints of days past. We'll see! But for today, It worked great!

Map Updater for 2019.10

Updated both my Nuvi 760 and Nuvi 765T using Map Updater with no problems. New map files went onto the SD card for the 760 as it has for the last handful of updates. On the 765T, it all still fit into internal memory. And yes, it did include the 3D files.

So I talked to Garmin and they told me that they do not support my C550 because it is outdated. They replaced it with Garmin Drive 50 USA+CAN LMT for free. I only paid shipping $8.00. Now I have the 2019.10 map updates. They told me to properly dispose my old GPS however it still works so I will keep it as a backup. I would like to know how to move my favorites and recently found places to my new GPS so I will start a new thread.

Permissions

Interesting occourance when updating to the latest GE, although I have full administrative rights on my laptop the install failed the first time stating that it indeed needed these rights already provided.
I right clicked GE and ran it with the redundant rights, updated no problems and Bob's your uncle.
No idea why this happened, never did in the years I've had it on my system.

Thanks for the reminder!

Just a friendly reminder that once all is updated with Garmin Express & working well, you can can do a clean-up in order to save several GB of disk space.

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/47390

Updated both our 2455 and 2555 yesterday -- about 30 minutes each:

1. Garmin Express update to v6.1.1.0,
2. Firmware update to v3.80,
3. Full NA Map update to 2019.10

Took almost as long to do the clean-up on two units as it did to do the updates. Always move the files from clean-up to a backup folder just in case there is a need to reinstall them to solve any issues. Have never had to do that in years, but hey, it's a belt and suspender thing smile

So, I wonder if that means there will be a 2019.11 map version released? Garmin has done something similar to that a couple of times in the past when a map version had to be pulled.
