Will be using the Alandb cloning method once again to update my three units

I was leaving work this afternoon and I happened to notice a message icon on my Garmin DriveLuxe 51. I checked it and it advised me that updates were available. How does that message get to the Garmin DriveLuxe 51?

I saw something this afternoon on my DriveAssist 50. Could it possibly come from Smartphone Link?

I looked at my past updates and 2017.30 was backed up may 10/2016
That means that 2018.10 came out around that time? So whats up with this dumb numbering? Lol somebody at Garmin is going to come and tell us that the numbering doesn't have anything to do with the year.

Yes, it does have wifi. I wasn't connected to my smartphone's hotspot, but maybe it tried to randomly connect to an open wifi within range.

Wonder why Garmin skipped over 2018.40 and came out with 2019.10? The last update was 2018.30 on October 11, 2017.

I'm not familiar with the unit, but it's possible it could have connected to some randomly open WIFI. You should drill down into the settings and make sure that it can't auto connect.

First Attempt at upgrading SD card in 660 Failed with Error Message (but didn't indicate WHAT).... Without doing anything else, told it to try again... Went directly to build, and a minute or so later, to copy... W10 Pro System.

Why.. would Garmin use a numbering system that looks like a calendar year. Would it not be so much simpler to use the year.. and then, perhaps.. the month.. and if they needed more versions the day. Daft!

But.. thanks for the heads up.. Downloading as I type.. supposedly done in 44 minutes...

When it comes to map updates anyway that's a good thing. Completed the task last night and the whole process lasted about 15 minutes. Afterwards I rolled back over and went to sleep.

garmin express said there was insufficient space on my sd card so while the garmin was still connected to my puter I did a quick format of the sd and clicked the try again pop up and it then continued with the update took about an hour but all went well !thanks for the heads up on the update !

...and the 350 this morning. Noticed some new roads that have been added. Nothing major though. Download went well. No problems or issues using GE.

I connected one of our 3597 units and was advised there were three updates: the map, "software", and some language files.

I believe the behavior was a bit different than on previous occasions when I've had both a software and a map update on this unit. Express did the software update first, them advised me to restart the 3597 by disconnecting the USB cable for five seconds.

When I had finished the map update, I took the unit outside for first turnon and first fix following the update--a longstanding practice. I did not see the extended boot time I am used to after a software update, and I saw a much faster first satellite fix than I am used to after any map update.

I don't have hard historic comparison elapsed times, but offer this subjective impression.

Did mine today -- 45 minutes for:
1) Garmin Express update,
2) Firmware update,
3) Full NA Map update and
4) Large JVC file replacement

NO problems other than the impatience of waiting. Just about 8GB of total download.

See how it works tomorrow out on the roads.

Just a friendly reminder that once all is updated with Garmin Express & working well, you can can do a clean-up in order to save several GB of disk space.

I assume that if you go directly from Garmin to the GPS you won't have any residual files to get rid of, no?

Another question: If you're using Garmin Express to install new maps do you still have to change folder options to display system and hidden files?

Whenever you use Garmin Express, you will definitely have the residual files & that's why I recommend the clean-up to save the disk space.

No, connect your unit to the computer and Garmin Express will update everything automatically.

Displaying the hidden folders along with system folders is needed when you use the Alandb cloning method.

I have completed the 2019.10 map update for all 3 of my nuvi's (3597, 755 and 855) with cloning and using the old version 5.5.0.0 of Garmin Express. That is the last version of Express that will run on my Windows Vista laptop.

2495 (50 min)
260 (1 hr 40 min)

Downloading for the 2495 and 260 took less than 5 min each. The majority of the time is for copying the map to the Nuvis.

Been a while since I updated maps on my 1390T. I remember having the ability to download the map and install it on the local computer to be used with MapSource/Basecamp as well as having it install on the GPS itself. Can I still do that so I have the latest for Mapsource/Basecamp?

Also, I do have my current map on an SD card. Don't remember how I got it to the SD card instead of the units internal memory. Is the option to install on a SDcard there through GE?
