Signal timing in Maryland

Interesting article about signal timing that was used in Maryland. Lengthening the yellow to state minimums cut down on revenue.

Yup, as a

resident of Maryland near those areas, I've always thought the yellow lights have been short, but I didn't have an idea how large the difference would make in revenue!

MD needs to clean up their implementation of the law for vehicles!

I suppose if you get a ticket, you could object & get more newspapers to cover the story.

Fred

Thanks....

I live in Montgomery County, MD and this is very interesting. Thanks.

Know what aggravates me? It's that local officials deliberately break the law without fear of repercussions. The judge should make the city/county refund every red cent of the fines plus court costs from the day the cameras were installed. Fat chance!

Why Not

add additional, escalating fines paid by the County to the individual in reimbursement for their being put out & having to waste their time pursuing the matter,

Yellow light duration

Easiest way to measure the yellow duration is with a camera that can shoot at 60FPS. It's easy to count the number of frames with the yellow signal to determine the yellow duration. Duration=0.0167sec x number_of_frames.

Thanks

I had thought there was no way for us to measure the time of the yellow light. Your method is very precise!

Slightly Subjective

Depending upon the bulb, it may take several frames for the light to completely turn on or completely turn off. Incandescent bulbs turn on faster than they turn off, while LED bulbs turn on and off very quickly. I have a RAM headrest mount for a camera which makes it easy to catch lights on the yellow cycle.
