MapInstall Problem - 660 vs. 3597

Today I decided to finally update my Nuvi 660 to the latest map. (I did the 3597 the day 2018.20 came out - to Device & Computer)

So, I plug the 660 into the USB cord. GE comes up and says new map is available for 660. Knowing that GE won't install the map (over 2Gb limit), I close it and open MapInstall.

MapInstall can't find 2018.20, but some Topo maps I downloaded are listed! I open BaseCamp and 2018.20 is listed there, along with the Topo maps and 2018.20 is displayed when selected.

I check the C:ProgramDataGarminMaps directory and the City Navigator North America NT 2018.20.gmap directory is there and contains files.

So, I reinstalled 2018.20 to the computer using the 3597 icon in GE. Install went well with no errors.

Plug in the 660 and open MapInstall again and still no listing for the new map.

Close all and open GE, but this time I use the 660 icon to install 2018.20 to the computer. Map installs with no errors.

Open MapInstall and now the 2018.20 map is listed and is now installing selected sections to 660. The rest of the map will go to the SD card when done.

Has anybody else discovered this or has it been discussed here? If so I must have missed it.

Hopefully, it's just a file structure difference or it doesn't contain features that are used on later models.

Interesting...

I have always assumed that the CN NA NT map data was the same for older models as for new models, so it seems odd that MapInstall would not recognize it for your 660. We know that the CN Europe map now has 2 versions ... NT for older devices and NTU for new devices, but the NA map only has a NT version. Hmmm....

Thinking back to the earlier discussion with werewolf about his old 276C, it makes me wonder if the method we had recommended (downloading for a 3597, then using MapInstall on the 276C) would have worked for him. As it turned out, Garmin enabled 2018.20 for MapUpdater, so he never had to try the other process.

Map tied to 3597

Since a map download can only be used in one GPS, there must be a digital tag on the first download for the 3597. The second download was tagged for the 660.

I would only use MapInstall when absolutely necessary, like installing part of the map in this case for the 660, and other GPSs with less memory. For all others, Garmin Express works well.

Map Tied to 3597

That is a good point Dobs108.

@metricman ... When you redownloaded the map to computer for the 660, did it appear that it downloaded new map data (which would have taken considerable download time), or did the download go very quickly indicating that it only downloaded the unlock code for the 660?

My thought as well

Thast was my thought as well. It's too bad that the process can't use the first download for the second device by checking the second's lifetime map update subscription rather than having to download a 2nd time. It's extra effort for the owner (and expense if the owner has a limited bandwidth each month) and extra traffic for Garmin's servers the way metricm had to do it.

Has to be License Key

Well, downloading is very quick. GE must see the map file in a Temp directory somewhere and starts the install without downloading. Used Task Manager to monitor Wi-Fi and no bump.

Must be something with the license key that GE sees. It also must be in the Registry somewhere because I copied the files from the 660 D/L to another drive, uninstalled the D/L and then D/Loaded the 3597 version. I compared files using a Hex Editor and found no differences in the files I checked - did not check all the files in the Product1 sub-directories.

Would dig deeper, but my stomach is growling up a storm demanding that I eat lunch NOW!
