Strange sd card behaviour on nuvi 2589lmt

I purchased Europe maps about a year ago and have been using them in nuvi 250w with no problems.
I bought nuvi 2589lmt this year and when I inserted sd card into the unit, I get the message " file is corrupted".

Any ideas?

Well ...

... How did you purchase the map? Did it originally come on a card or did you download it to one? If the latter it'll be locked to your original device.

Maybe

Could it be the gmapprom and gmapsupp naming of the image files?

two options

First try to remove card, clean connectors (golden strips) with pure alcohol, reinsert card, and try again. If this doesn't work you got two options.

If you downloaded EU map from Garmin and than loaded it to card with GE or MapInstall than file is probably not registered properly with you new GPS. Some files may be missing or informations about map file are improper. You can try to download map again and install it through 2589 again. It may fix problem.

If you bought card with maps on it than try to use them again with 250, if possible. If you get error message than card may be damaged. Bad news is that in this case maps are tided to card serial number and can't be moved to another card. All you can do is try to talk to Garmin about replacing card.

Strange sd card behaviour on nuvi 2589lmt

It came originally on a card.
File name on a card = gmapsupp.
I cleaned it probably 10x already. Like I said, works perfectly on 250 error message only on 2589.
Loosing hope here guys smile

Well ...

... in that case contact Garmin, if it's a genuine card gone bad they'd normally replace it.

It sounds like the card is

It sounds like the card is locked to the gps you first installed it in (250). If it still works in the 250 but does not in the 2589lmt ask Garmin, but it might be locked by design.

Regarding maps on SD cards

For those here new to maps on SD cards, let me clarify what's been said here and elsewhere:

-Maps purchased on SD cards direct from Garmin (or resold Garmin-made Map-on-SD cards; e.g., eBay, etc.) These maps are tied to the specific SD card and can not be transferred to a different SD card. These SD card maps can be inserted into any Garmin GPS, swapped back and forth between devices, and when no longer needed, can be resold. These maps can not be updated. The only warning is that some older devices can not read files greater than 2GB in size and map files over 2GB in size will not display on the device. See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42561 The OP in this thread has stated the map came already installed on the SD card, so if this was a Garmin-made Map on SD, it should work in both devices owned by the OP. If the map was a pirated map not made by Garmin, all bets are off and a solution will not be discussed on this web site.

-On the other hand, a map of Europe could have been purchased as a download and installed to a SD card. If this was done, the map will be tied to a single Garmin GPS device and will report an error if inserted into a different GPS device. I can see where this could be the OP's problem except that: 1) the OP states it wasn't a downloaded map and 2) if this is the problem, the error should be something along the lines of "Can not unlock map" while the OP states the error is "Corrupt file." To me, a corrupt file error is likely coming from the computer's OS and is not a Garmin-offered error and is coming from a file that can not be read. I can imagine that this could be due to a defective SD card (but then why would it work in one of two devices?) or possibly due to a defective SD card socket in the 2589 or other 2589 hardware issue. This could be tested by writing some files to a new SD card and seeing if the nuvi or computer can read the files on the card without getting a corrupt file error. It'd also be of interest to find a third nuvi GPS device and see if the map can be read and used. If it turns out that the 2589 has problems reading files on any SD card, then a device hardware problem is suggested and this could easily become a large problem when a future North America map update will not fit internally and will need to be installed to a SD card.

If proven to be a 2589 hardware issue, it may warrant a phone call to Garmin Customer Service to check into getting a replacement or to contact sharcnet to discuss a potential device repair. If it turns out to be a problem with a Garmin-made Map on SD card, then as sussamb suggests, call Customer Service and see what they will offer along the lines of getting a replacement SD cap.

Thanks for the clarification

This clarification helps to understand the nuances of how the files/cards work. Thanks for posting
