Where are my custom POI's GARMIN Drivesmart 50LMT?

I have inserted a memory card and used the POI loader to get them on that card. When I plug in the unit to my computer I can see the POI database on that card. But there is no option on my Garmin to access those Custom POI's. On my other Garmin is was under EXTRAS but there is no such category on this new unit. Does anyone know how I can access them from my Drivesmart 50LMT? TIA.

Well ...

... On my DriveSmart they're in Where to, Categories, Custom POIs

That's what you'd think

That's what you'd think right? There is no custom POI's or anything like that under the Categories Option. I'm stumped...

Then ...

... Look at the SD card. Is it formatted FAT32? If it is then try another card.

Also try placing them on the device, are they then seen?

Yup it's FAT32...

Yup it's FAT32...I ran Garmin Express and then the 'add new device' but it doesn't see the SD card at all, but yet if I stick it in the computer, the computer sees it just fine.

While trying to solve this...

While trying to solve the missing custom POIs on a SD card, why not install them to the Drivesmart 50 and see if they appear? There should be more than enough room on the Drivesmart 50.

The Garmin "How much Memory" FAQ doesn't list the Drivesmart 50. It'd be useful to determine its size and report it to bear007, the FAQ maintainer:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/34375

This probably isn't applicable, but on my nuvi 3597, the Custom POIs are accessed by tapping WhereTo/Categories/DownArrow (three times), where it then appears in the Other Categories section (below the built in POIs but above the Search Tools).

Thanks I'll try installing

Thanks I'll try installing them on the unit itself. I do have an 'other categories' section but there is nothing in it other than 'Learn More' which is info about what the other categories is used for. This is very weird...

Custom pois

For your model.

How to find custom POIs

To find installed custom POIs on your device:

Touch Where to?
Touch Categories
Scroll down to Other Categories
Touch Custom POIs
Touch the desired custom POI category (if applicable)

If not there you have a installation problem or a bad sd card.

See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 for installing custom pois.Note 14. If using the Memory Card use the pull down Device window to select it.

Have you changed to Mass storage mode? http://www.poi-factory.com/node/41416 also http://www.poi-factory.com/node/40814

I know you said you used poi loader.

But, when you see them on the card, does the file have a .gpi extension?

SD card folders

I don't use a SD card for custom POIs. Given that, I wonder if the .gpi file's folder location is important. In addition to confirming the gpi file extension, might it be useful to know what folder in the SD card the file is in? I know the OP stated that the custom POIs were loaded with POI Loader, so I do expect the file to be a gpi and if important, it will be in the right folder of the SD card. But it'd be good to know where and what the file is in the SD card since it's reported that it doesn't seem to be offering the loaded custom POIs on the GPS device.

Folder.

When you run PoiLoader and select the SD card it automatically makes the folder. Manually making the folder is not required.

Did POI Loader successfully make a .gpi file?

pwohlrab wrote:

I think pwohlrab's point is, "Did POI Loader successfully make a .gpi file?" If the .gpi file is not on the card POI Loader was unable to create it from the POI files.

I'm having the same problem.

I'm having the same problem. there are 3 .gpi files. And there is nothing under Categories/Other Categories. this devise was working fine before. The unit was in storage for quit a while and the battery run down. Could that have something to do with the problem? I'll retry and put them on the devise and see if they show up there.
Ron

OK, I removed the mini disk,

OK, I removed the mini disk, run POI loader 1st, removed all previously installed poi's. Then ran poi loader again and installed the poi's I wanted. and Dezl found them under Other categories. We'll see what happens.
thanks,
Ron

Custom pois

It would be a good idea to get a full charge on the GPS before installing custom pois. Connect device to computer and let it charge for several hours. It you have a portable charger that would make the charging process faster.

Run Poiloader and select to remove all pois first. Then follow the instructions per http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 and you should be good to go. A video version can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMAbHO4DI6I and supporting videos at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/45601

I don't

I don't want to hijack this thread but what possible difference would it make whether the GPS had a full charge or not before you install POI's?

To install them using POIloader you need to have the unit attached to your computer via the USB cable which is charging the the GPS all the while it's attached. Once you disconnect the unit from the computer the .gpi file is already been installed and all that happens when the GPS reboots is that the gpi file gets read in. If the device dies on reboot I would think the gpi file will get read in on the next successful boot up.

These things run on electricity

Several people we have helped lately had the GPS in storage and the battery was depleted. More than one could not successfully boot and rebooted repeatedly, apparently because of low voltage when the unit booted up.

The USB connection only supplies 1/2 amp, not enough to both charge a depleted battery and maintain the voltage during booting and operation. Today's GPSs have larger screens and higher resolution, which means a lot more electricity is needed.

If we were writing the .gpi file to a memory stick, we would be confident it would be accurate because the memory stick needs a very small amount of electricity. The GPS is much more than a memory stick. The processor will be drawing electricity while the depleted battery is drawing electricity. If the voltage to the GPS memory sags while the .gpi file is written, it might have errors.

Once you set up your files. Download
POI Loader for Mac http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3697 .After installation run POI Loader and follow the instructions.
