Keeping POI Files On SD Card

I downloaded the poi file for Harley Davidson dealerships on an SD card and inserted it into the slot on my Nuvi 55LM. The locations are now on the gps and when I tried to save a new destination as a favorite I get a message that the favorites folder is full. Is there someway to keep the poi locations on the SD card only?

Good news, bad news

The good news is that you can install your desired POI files as Custom POIs either in the nuvi or SD card. You need to download the POI file(s) you want [you may already have done this] to your computer. Then download, install and use the Garmin POI Loader program to load the custom POIs to either your nuvi or SD card:

which will install all your custom POIs for use with your nuvi. (I have about 20,000 individual POI locations loaded as Custom POIs and can still save more Favorites.)

The bad news is that the way you did it by copying the .gpx file download directly to be used in your nuvi/SD card is that they are now not Custom POIs but rather Favorites, and as you've found, only 1000 total Favorites can be saved before getting an error. You therefore need to delete these Favorites:

Good luck...and welcome to The Factory.

Poi on SD card

I always keep them there, even when I turn the GPS on and ask me if I would like to transfer them to the GPS. Just select NO.

It would be nice to have an option on a GPS like window does DO NOT SHOW ASK AGAIN.

POI file on SD card doesn't save space.

Last time I checked, the POI.gpi file always gets loaded into the POI folder on your GPS. You don't save anything by also putting it on your SD card. Plus the H-D.gpi is only 171K.

I believe he was talking GPS or card.

I have always had mine on a card. I used to change it between GPS units and just got in the habit. I don't change units anymore.

That is correct pwohirab

Let me start by saying when I got the gps 1650 on the box it show lane assistance, but I never notice that it never show me any lane assistance when I would enter a destination and drive on Highway. Then I connect the GPS on my pc and I notice that the JCV file from the GPS was missing, and The reason I believe that the JCV file was never there cause of the large JCV file and it was no room on my Gps to be installed. So I purchase an SD card and I included the new version of map update, the JCV full screen that go with the proper version of the map and I install all my POI Speed/RED light Camera ,Rest area, Speed trap and so on..as well

All work well and sometimes I use the same card on a different GPS with no problem. and cause one is mp3 compatible and the other one only use wav file I install both version on the same card.

1650?

I am not sure I follow your point Driver 38 or how it relates to this thread about POI files on SD. First, I don't think there ever was a nuvi 1650, so I assume you mean your 1450 that your profile shows you own. Lane assist is part of the map data and has nothing to do with the JCV file, so again I will assume you mean junction view. If that is the case, then yes, your 1450 is definitely one of the devices that will benefit from the large full screen JCV file. The 8x5, 1390 and 14xx nuvis are the devices that Garmin decided for whatever reason to cripple with the puny cartoonish JCV that comes with the map update. So replacing that with the "large" full screen full coverage JCV file that Stephron is kind enough to upload is a great service to those who have one of these devices.

I guess maybe you are saying that some devices like your 1450 need an SD card because they have insufficient internal storage to hold all the files that make the device as useful as it it can be. I agree with that, but am not sure I agree that the POI .gpi file is one that needs to go on SD or that it makes much sense to put it there.
